IGT - 5/8 ... Mets Able to beat Cain?

Frayed Knot
May 08 2007 05:17 PM

If you're not familiar with Matt Cain yet you oughta be.

Just 22 y/o with just over one full season under his belt, he's given up just 201 hits in 275 innings pitched in his career-to-date. Still walks a lot as many young pitchers do - but barely a baserunner per inning over 6 starts this season.

'07: 6 starts, 38 IP, 20 Hits, 21 BBs, 25 Ks, 3.80 ERA, 1.09 WHiP

Elster88

Didn't we throw him a beating once?

Nymr83
May 08 2007 07:28 PM

i think so, but the Mets seem to beat great pitchers (Johnson, Clemens) while getting no-hit by rookie nobodies like Jose Jimenez. getting beat up by the Mets is almost a good sign for a guy!

As per the SNY pregame, David Wright came in with his head shaved today.

This of course lead to everybody else getting their heads shaved. By game time, the only Mets still with hair are Reyes, Glavine, Heilman and Sele.

Nymr83
May 08 2007 07:50 PM

seriously?

Gwreck
May 08 2007 07:55 PM

Kevin Burkhardt was reporting that Green and Newhan were among the last holdouts, but once they were willing to do it, just about everyone else was in.

If it helps this team bond, I'm all for it.

reyes is clearly too pretty to shave his head.

i'm guessing the three pitchers are all married. i could of course check on this by looking up wifey-watch, but its more fun and easier to speculate.

Something like the opposite. He became a man against us. He had Keith Hernandez walking into the San Francisco booth asking "Who is this guy?" He won again in June with a lesser effort.

I love watching Bonds at bat,he rarely swings at a ball he can't hit,and I love how the Mets just pitch to him, great eye at the plate.

After the game Glavine got the buzz cut,Sele has a family portrait today on the beach with his family so he was excused(prolly do it after),Reyes says he'll do it on the off day in NY.

Rick Down and Ray Ramirez got it too.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Just because Carlos Beltran was back in the lineup Monday did not necessarily mean all had returned to normal for the Mets' centerfielder. The day after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts, Beltran made his left quad muscle sound more like a lingering problem.

"It's stayed the same," said Beltran, who had an MRI last week in New York and was scratched Sunday because of the sore leg. "But late in the game, it gets tight, and afterward, it gets tight. I take anti-inflammatories to make the swelling go away. But the thing is, the only way for it to go away is to stop playing. If it doesn't continue to improve, I'll take time off and let it heal."

Beltran was bothered by his quad muscle in 2005, his first season with the Mets, but this time his performance doesn't seem too affected. He is on track for another MVP-caliber season, and was batting .320 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs before last night's game.

Benjamin Grimm
May 09 2007 08:35 AM

If that's the case, I wouldn't object at all to the Mets letting him sit out the Milwaukee series. With the Thursday off day, that would give him four days off in a row, interrupted only by potential pinch-hitting duties.

DocTee
May 09 2007 10:32 AM

I was at this game-- took the ferry over, then walked to the stadium. Stopped by Gordon Biersch brewery for some garlic fries (a SF tradition and WAY better than you can imagine) then took in the game with an old friend and former colleague....12th row seats behind the Giants bullpen-- only $40 on craigslist!--

$8 beers, but they were pretty good (Biercsh)-- they have an excellent assortment of food at the park: from Orlando Cepeda's BBQ to authentic Mexican churros and sushi...

Tons of Mets fans, very good to see. Lots of beautiful people, too, which was a nice surprise.

Reyes looked awesome, Delgado not so much (did he get old overnight?)

Cool promotion: if you are in attendance when Bonds homers, you just need to present your stub at a Giants Dugout Store to receive a commemorative pin-- I was there for 745 (or whatever number it might have been). a bit of a homage to the coveted pins that were awarded to those brave souls who stayed for the duration of extra-inning games at Candlestick ("I came, I saw, I survived" say those momentos, in Latin, of course)...

Trying to convince the Mrs. to go with me today-- any advice on getting her to accede? She's a Mets fan, but today IS our anniversary (9 years).

I think you are a worrier by nature CF.

If Beltran's quad is good enough for him to play the field, hit and run then right now its not so bad. If they sit him out the next series then by the beginning of next week his leg should be fine.

I have faith in the training staff evaluating his injury and deciding how best to treat it. If they think he can continue to play without a high risk of aggravating it then I suppose I'm good with that.

Just the fact that he is playing, and playing productively, tells me that this injury is nowhere near the severity of the one he had in 2005.

SAN FRANCISCO -- It was the morning after the night before, and Shawn Green was suffering with hair hangover. The Mets right fielder, aka Shorn Green, was no more comfortable with his new and unwanted buzz cut Wednesday morning than he had been Tuesday night.
"I had to do it, right?" he asked, second-guessing his own submission to the powerful peer pressure that existed before the Tuesday trimming. "It's not very good, is it?"

When Green returned to the team hotel Tuesday, his wife, Lindsay, had been forewarned. Her reaction: "A painful laugh," he said.

By Wednesday morning, she had become more accustomed to the change. But she spoke some words her husband found ominous: "You look more European now. We'll have to change your wardrobe."

And Green said, "She wasn't kidding."
