The Cubs score one in the top of the first. Soriano hits a two out double then scores on a weak flare to centerfield off the end of his bat. Glavine fooled Ramirez, but he fought it off into shallow center and Beltran just couldn't quite come up with it.

May 14 2007 05:29 PM

Ugh. Marquis singles in two more Cubbies on a grounder just under the glove of Easley.

Batty31
May 14 2007 05:39 PM

I just put the game on. Should Easley have fielded that ball?

Zvon
May 14 2007 05:39 PM

Glavine's been beating the ball into the ground for the most part so far.
Id rather see that than leaving the ball up.

Cubbies have been lucky.
All RBI hits were possibly playable balls that just got thru or off a glove.
(Endy--howd you not catch that? Easley--gah. Nice try both.)

Mets down 4-0 after 1 1/2.

Thank you, Zvon for the update.

I got disgusted with all the soft RBI hits the Cubs were getting so I went out to do some work in the yard. It doesn't appear that I missed anything good.

Nothing cheap about that one. Wright has been going the other way more of late. That generally means good things for him.

Mets are climbing back into this one.

Zvon
May 14 2007 06:24 PM

Glavines starting to leave it up now.
Only afew walks, but he better get it back down..

Batty31
May 14 2007 06:26 PM

What were you saying about walks, Zvon?? Bases loaded!

Zvon
May 14 2007 06:29 PM

He may be getting a lil squeezed on borderliners--UGH! that one to DeRosa was a strike.

Tom walks the bases loaded.
Goes 3-2 on DeRosa and.........
gets him to pop to center.

Nice job by Glavine getting out of that jam.

Mets lead, 4-4.

Rockin' Doc

As we go to the seventh inning stretch we're still tied at 4. Time for the Mets to bust this game open.

I need a rally beer. Damn, I find myself without a beer in the house. What am I to do. Think damnit, think. I'll improvise with a rally rum and coke.

Let's go Mets!

Rockin' Doc

Damn, that ball had trouble written all over it. Had the two cubbies collided, Reyes had an easy triple.

Ruerto Rican...I think Doc has been drinking a bit too much rum already. j/k

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 07:24 PM

So far this season, Delgado is not really at the top of my wish list in such situations. He just has never really got going this year.

Batty31
May 14 2007 07:25 PM

But when he does finally get going, he'll be on fire for awhile. Hopefully that will be sooner than later...

Frayed Knot

Did Lou really think Willie WASN'T going to respond to Daryle Ward ph-ing with a LHP?
Cubbies are going to run out of both bench & pen pretty soon.

Rockin' Doc

Hey Pedro, throw a damn strike.

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 07:44 PM

Nice play by Easley. It's amazing how much more ground infielders cover when the ball comes up for them as opposed to hugging the turf.

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 07:51 PM

Time to put an end to this thing. The Mets have Easley, a pinch hitter (likely), and Reyes due up.

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 07:56 PM

Reyes with a two out single.

Run Reyes, run!

OlerudOwned
May 14 2007 07:59 PM

Jose Reyes is so fast that he created a wind tunnel which caused Blanco's throw to sail errantly.

Zvon
May 14 2007 08:00 PM

And a big steal of 2nd.
See that 2nd baseman try and deek Reyes?

Endy draws the walk.
1st and 2nd, 2 out, Beltran up.

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 08:00 PM

Speed kills baby. Reyes goes, the Cubs pitch out, and Blanco nearly throws it into center. I'm not sure he could have got Reyes even with a good throw, Jose had a huge lead and a great jump.

Endy walks. So it falls to Beltran to send the faithful home happy.

OlerudOwned
May 14 2007 08:02 PM

Feel insulted, Carlos. Get angry. Take it out on the ball.

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 08:02 PM

Damn, they walk Beltran. The sacks are drunk with Mets and Delgado has a chance once again.

Zvon
May 14 2007 08:03 PM

Come on Delagado--bring it home.

Batty31
May 14 2007 08:04 PM

Batty31
May 14 2007 08:07 PM

BALL 4...METS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zvon
May 14 2007 08:07 PM

HA!

Rockin' Doc
May 14 2007 08:08 PM

Great at bat for Delgado. He earns a bases loaded walk by fouling off 4 or 5 pitches.

Mets win 5-4.

Rockin' Doc

Zvon
May 14 2007 08:27 PM

Mets played a messy game in the field and still managed to win this one.
Tuff break for Glavine with the no decision.
He pitched better than the box score will reflect.

Frayed Knot
May 14 2007 09:09 PM

I didn't get the Cubbie strategy with all the intentional and semi-intentional walks.
The pitcher's gotta go after Endy there. Then, once losing him, you can kind of understand being careful with Carlos I because you'd rather face Carlos II, but the one downside there is the one that actually happened.

Lou - never patient with hurlers to begine with, has gotta be steaming at his staff tonight. Can't hold a 4-0 lead, then 3 walks to lose it.

Heilman "vultures" himself a nice 1-pitch win.

Also a nice win for the CPF regulars in attendance. Not a huge crowd but loud when necessary.

No sign of Cliff except for a few innings on the top step of the dugout. Hopefully he's in the lineup tomorrow to receive some well-deserved love from the fans.

Fans booed when Heilman was announced into the game in the 9th. Not everybody, but a sizeable chunk. Very disappointing.

Glad we pulled it out because I thought Willie shoulda pinch hit for Glavine in the bottom of the 5th (he was at 96 pitches) when he was due to lead off.

With Ben Johnson apparently back, I wonder how much longer we can tolerate David Newhan. How long did the HR buy him? A week? Two?

Johnny Dickshot
May 14 2007 09:21 PM

Strange tho that he left Howry and Eyre in the pen -- never warmed 'em up as far as I could tell -- when he had Chavez and Delgado to retire. I guess, with 2 out, you just try and get the batter. I would anyway.

Key pitch in the sequence with Endy was the PO. I hate when announcers say this but this was one time where a 2-out single by Reyes ruined their whole night.

Sat next to a geeky Cub couple and I got into a bit of a foul mood after the first couple of innings. I soon became annoying enough so that she and he switched places.

I'm now 2-0 at Shea this year, both walkoffs.

]Fans booed when Heilman was announced into the game in the 9th

That's fuckin disgusting.
He's hardly been great this year, but had a dozen or so scoreless IPs before that (meaningless as it turned out) HR in game 1 against the Brews. I guess only perfection is acceptable to some.

]Strange tho that he left Howry and Eyre in the pen

I think Gary et al said something about Howry not pitching well lately and currently residing in the Chateau Bow-Wow

I read in the paper this morning that Lou was barking about his pen doing a bad job. I think that's pretty lame considering he was the one that pulled his starter and went to them so early. Marquis had a lot left in the tank, and of the two baserunners, one of them was that fly ball that Soriano botched. I also disagree with the intentional walk to Beltran.

The more I see of Lou, the more I'm glad he's not managing this team.

I'd not be surprised to hear Wuertz got sent down the road after last night.

Yet, you see that article (I'm assuming you mean Filip Bondy in the Snooze) masterbating furiously over his fantasy of Piniella managing the MFYs and bringing the kind of "manic passion," to mismangement of the bullpen instead of Torre's typical nonchalance when he screws up.

I will say I couldn't kill Piniella for yanking Marquis necessarily -- he may have been tired or whatever and, I forget the final total, but around half his pitches were balls, accorrding to the screboard, and it seemed only a matter of time before the Mets really started whacking him.

I read the Bondy bit,Bondy at Shea can only mean one thing, the MFY are on the road.

Well, yeah, but that's true of most people. It's rare that anyone is at Shea when the Yankees are at home, because then the Mets are usually on the road.

I'd love to see Piniella managing this team. Obviously he went to his pen because he expected them to pitch well, and they disappointed him. If you credit him with their poor performance, do you also credit him when them pitch well?

I think you'd have to do that. You have to credit him for bringing in Cotts, who got Delgado to GIDP.
