NYY (18 - 21; 9.5 GB) visit NYM (24 - 16; 1.5 GA) for 3 games
Saturday: 3:55 - FOX (Regional Network Telecast) - Darrell Rasner vs Glavine Rasner, (5 starts; 1-2; 3.28; 1.42; 11 K, 8 BBs) one of the slew of pitchers brought up to cover April injuries, has never pitched against the Mets NYY batters vs Glavine:
Sunday: 8:05 - ESPN National Telecast - Tyler Clippard vs Maine Clippard, 22 y/o and making his ML debut, has moved up and down the NYY prospect lists over the last few years. Not a hard-thrower, but has an assortment of breaking pitches and usually good control. DH/1B - Jason Giambi: .273/.389/.438 - 5 HRs, 18 RBI OK, so he was never signed to be a speedster. But you've got to see him (try to) run recently to really appreciate just how fuckin' slow he's become. He's like Molina slow. In fact, he's like Benjy carrying Jose while pulling Yadier in a sled slow. And now he's battling bone spurs in his heel just as he has to play the field all weekend. 2B - Robinson Cano: .235/.276/.324 - 1 HR, 16 RBI I think maybe we can put the Cooperstown plaque on hold for now following his near batting title last year. No gold glove, but an improved fielder. SS - Derek Jeter: .368/.444/.477 - 2 HR, 21 RBI yadda, yadda, yadda 3B - Alex Rodriguez: .318/.400/.675 - 15 HRs 39 RBIs Great overall numbers obviously, but check out these splits: 1st 75 ABs: .400 BA, .453 OBA, 1.053 SLG, 14 HR, 34 RBI, 7 2Bs next 75 Abs: .236 BA; .347 OBA; .297 SLG, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 2Bs Still leads MLB in HRs & RBIs C - Jorge Posada: .371/.428/.581 - 4 HR, 22 RBI Defying the aging catcher syndrome by having some of his best seasons - both offensively and defensively - in his mid-30s. With the late afternoon start on Saturday I'm sure he'll start all three games. LF - Hideki Matsui: .275/.385/.440 - 2 HR, 18 RBI Slow start due to injury. Looks worse in the field with each passing season CF - Johnny Damon: .256/.358/.359 - 2 HR, 18 RBI Had a good 1st year in the Bronx, but struggling now with a variety of injuries (back, calf) and has been stting and/or DHing lately. Also was the only guy they could get and still manage to downgrade their CF throwing arm from Bernie Williams RF - Bobby Abreu: .236/.306/.304 - 2 HR, 21 RBI Worst slump of his career right now. Has a .400+ career OBA but isn't even drawing walks at this point and check out that (non)Slugging Average!. Bunts even more than the other #3 hitter in NYC. The Pen: Mariano Rivera: 13.2 IP, 16 H, 13 K, 4 BB, 6.54 ERA: Two 9th inning HRs are the most glaring early-season problem. And, while the wails over his demise are certainly overblown and based on relatively small samples of random closer blues, he's certainly not on a roll that inspires "game over" confidence. Kyle Farnsworth: 16 IP, 16 H, 9 K, 8 BB, 4.41 ERA: Should have better results with his stuff Scott Proctor (1.18 WhiP) - Luis Vizcaino (1.57 WHiP) - Brian Brunney (1.14 WHiP): Proctor served his 4-game bean-ball suspension during the week so as to be ready just for little 'ol us. They are collectively Torre's main [over]work[ed]-horses in the pen (21 appearances each) and are being relied on a lot as the starters frequently fail to clear the 5th inning. Mike Myers: Side-arming LOOGY who's not having very good success against LHBs. Kind of like having a pesticide that doesn't kill bugs. Ron Villone has just been called up to replace Sean Henn as the extra LHP Bench: Melky Cabrera: .226/.286/.322 - 2 HR, 13 RBI The darling of '06 fans and the poster child for the fantasy of a home-grown talent revival, he has 2 HRs in his last 250+ ABs dating back to last August Doug Mienkiewicz: .231/.297/.396 - 3 HR, 12 RBI Playing mostly full-time only because they feel Giambi in the field is like Michael Jackson: they wear one glove for no apparent reason. Hitting better lately, but will probably be relegated to late-inning defense this series. Miguel Cairo (IF/OF) 2 for 16; Will Nieves (C) 1 for 27; and Josh Phelps (1B/OF/DH) 11 for 43, 1 2B, 2 HR easily comprise the worst NYY bench in memory. Injuries: Mets: Valentin (knee), Alou (knee), O.Hernandez (shoulder), Sanchez (shoulder) Yanx: Hughes (hammy), Karstens (busted up leg), Pavano (everything, both real and imagined) Weather Outlook: Friday: Not Good, Rainy, windy, upper 40s. Decent chance of delay and/or postponment Saturday: A little better. Scattered showers mid-upper 50s. Could affect the timing though will probably get the game in. Sunday: Showers early but drying as the day goes on. By evening game time rain is gone and around 60. * A Friday rain-out will probably be made-up as a Sunday day/night DH Yanx lead all-time reg season subway series 32 - 22

I read this morning, and I can't remember the source (the Daily News maybe) that Torre will not be playing Giambi at 1B during interleague, so I guess we'll see Phelps at 1b at least for the first two games.

If you play the "expectations" game, this series is a loser for the Mets. if they sweep the Yankees, it's "Of course, everyone expected that" and if they lose even a game to them, it's going to be "Well we expected that sweep, that knockout punch, and you couldn't do it." If the Yankees win 2 of 3, fuhgeddaboutit!

Kid Carsey May 18 2007 09:43 AM |
I don't have any real expectations, I've just grown weary of it and inter-

I just want us to play well. You know, not make dumb plays, and we should beat these guys. It's that simple.

"Take me to the station, Put me on a train, I've got no expectations...." What I wouldn't give for a good re-alignment, to be in the same division as the Yankees, Phillies, BoSox, and play them most of the season, say, twenty games apiece, in game that would meant everything to each organization....

The second interleague game ever was the following afternoon between the Cubs and Brewers. Jeff D'Amico pitched for the Brewers and Brian McRae led off for the Cubs. I almost chose that matchup until I realized the game was in Chicago. Gerald Williams led off for the Brewers, but Terry Mulholland never played for the Mets.

MLB.com says that on June 12th ,1997 Texas played San Francisco ,It was the first of four Interleague games that night, the other three being played later on the West Coast.

[chipper] That's because Delgado, as a Blue Jay, got to play all the easy teams like the Mets and the Braves... and then as a Marlin, got to play all the easy teams in the other league, like the Yankees and Red Sox. [/chipper]
