I have always liked Vernon Wells as a ballplayer. But something happened recently that makes me like his sense of humor, too.

During a game at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field, some of the “Bleacher Creatures” had a running, good natured banter going with Wells that ended with Wells tossing a ball to one of the loudest, complete with a tongue-in-cheek message.

'Dear Mr. Dork, Here is your ball! Can you please tell me what gas station you work at, so when you are pumping my gas, I can yell at you!!! Now sit down, shut up and enjoy the game. Your favorite centerfielder, Vernon Wells"

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the "I'm a millionaire ballplayer and you're not, so you probably pump gas for a living" attitude there.

I want to begin more of my statements with "Dear Mr. Dork."

i thinkthe idea was more "can i go yell at you when you're working"? i think its pretty funny, i'll have to endeavor to be loud enough the next time Wells comes to town, unfortunately we don't have CF seats

That's the sense I got to. Few people have to deal with heckling by spectators in their day-to-day work.

I have say that I have become anti-heckle over the years.

I can probably count on one hand the number of truly good hecklers I've heard in my life, and shockingly most have been in the centerfield triangle in Fenway. Players would actually turn around and laugh, point or otherwise show approval.

Sadly, the vast majority I've heard are drunken attention whores who are nowhere near as funny as they think they are. The only thing they accomplish is getting the people sitting near them to look for empty seats in other sections.

Willets Point recently linked to the same Vernon Wells story in the "Question For Autograph Collectors" thread. The heckler receiving the ball from Wells seemed to enjoy it and found it funny. I think that after every several innings of being heckled, Wells found a rather creative and good natured way to respond in kind. While I don't know Wells personally, I believe his response to his antogonists was pretty cool.

I agree with the esteemed metsguyinmichigan, that most hecklers are as obnoxious and annoying to the fans with the misfortune of being seated near them as they are the players themselves.

I sat by some hilarious hecklers in the outfield bleachers in San Francisco. I think that since they were mainly just having fun, not intending to hurt, and not taking themselves seriously is why they were actually funny.

I post something.
Then I go to work.
When I come back, my post has been turned into a poll.
I feel so .......................................... violated.
