From the Sunday, May 6, NY Times:

It's the one where you insert the letter "A" into well known phrases. In the answer for 101 across... "Geraldo rehearses his show?".... is there a misspelling in the answer?

Frayed Knot
May 15 2007 12:41 PM

I no longer have that issue, but I think everything was kosher.

The answer was: ARIVER[u:62faf244bb]A[/u:62faf244bb]RUNSTHROUGHIT

... playing off the pun of "run through" meaning a rehearsal and the movie 'A River Runs Through It'

cooby
May 15 2007 12:44 PM

Okay, I see what I am doing wrong, duh.

I have

A RIVERA RUNSS TROUGH IT

Thanks, Frayed Knot!

Changed the title in case any other burning crossword discussions come up

Occasionally I'll get stuck on a puzzle somewhere and swear that they must have made a mistake, or a typo, or a huge screw-up in the clues someplace.
But they never do. the mistake always turns out to be mine.

cooby
May 15 2007 05:41 PM

Yeah, me too :)

(I'm sure it comes as no surprise)

Anyone else try the Bill Clinton puzzle from the Times recently? Toughie.

cooby

I tried to find it the other day - where is it?

cooby
May 15 2007 09:15 PM

It's right above the little Uncle Sam guy and the guy with the bullhorn.

Doing okay so far, can't figure out the gimmicks yet though, but I will

I do have one question...who is Boomer? Clinton's nickname is Bubba, right?

soupcan
May 16 2007 07:22 AM

Thanks I'll do it on the train tonight.

RE: Today's (5/16) puzzle -

6 down, the clue is 'Imbibed'. I have TOPE_ . Is it 'TOPED'? Never heard of that.

cooby
May 16 2007 07:24 AM

Nothing

seawolf17
May 16 2007 07:53 AM

I'm assuming they mean Boomer as in "Baby Boomer." It has something to do with the song titles, but I can't figure what yet. And some of his clues are very obscure.

The answers are making fun of the aging boomer generation.

So the Otis Redding song becomes DOC OF THE DAY
and the Crosby, Stills Nash one is WOODEN HIPS

etc.

* Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose!!

Staying out of this thread until I tackle Bubba's puzzle.

See ya.

I think a crossword puzzle designed by George W. Bush would be even more challenging since Bush is so good at making up words.

cooby
May 16 2007 08:52 PM

Apparently I do not know enough old songs

Herb Gardner

Is emu one of the clues in the Clinton puzzle?

soupcan
May 21 2007 06:50 AM

That Clinton puzzle is fucked up.

I finished it but it was difficult/stupid. Took me two days.

cooby
May 21 2007 08:47 PM

I finished it too but I still don't understand some of it

Did anybody figure out who the sitcom character with the leather jacket in the Smithsonian is?

soupcan
Jul 11 2007 08:10 AM

Could not get that either!

How could it not be FONZIE?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 08:14 AM

The only other person I could think of was Colonel Hogan and I hardly think that show would rate a Smithsonian display.

I'm glad I'm not the only one stumped; my word ends with a C and has too many letters for Fonzie!

Edgy DC
Jul 11 2007 09:21 AM

FONZIE's other name is ARTHUR.

Another possiblitity SQUIGGY.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 11 2007 09:26 AM

Arthur C. Fonzerelli

Edgy DC
Jul 11 2007 09:32 AM

How about it, Coo? Does ARTHURC work?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 09:39 AM

Dang, I left it at home. But geez, that sounds a little tricky even for them.

HahnSolo
Jul 11 2007 09:50 AM

Could it be THEFONZ?

Maybe the C is wrong?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 10:07 AM

That is a really good suggestion, if it's not ArthurC.

Gee, I can't wait to get home from work to check!

It's entirely possible that the C is wrong...soupcan do you remember what yours ends with?

soupcan
Jul 11 2007 10:28 AM

I remember trying every variation of Winkler's character - FONZIE, THE FONZ, ARTHUR, etc and nothing worked.

Hogan's not bad but I don't think that fits either.

Which puzzle was it coobs?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 10:38 AM

Well, like I say, it's at home but I think it was a Friday a couple of weeks ago

soupcan
Jul 11 2007 10:52 AM

Found it and checked the answer.

You want it?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 11:08 AM

well....was it any of the above?

soupcan
Jul 11 2007 11:22 AM

As a matter of fact it was.

cooby
Jul 11 2007 11:52 AM

Does it end with a C?

soupcan
Jul 11 2007 12:18 PM

Are you going to keep asking me for hints until you 'guess' it?

Want the answer or not cheater?

cooby
Jul 11 2007 01:49 PM

Well, obviously, if your answer doesn't end with a "C", then it's wrong...

Edgy DC
Jul 11 2007 01:53 PM

Willets Point

Tell us the fucking answer NOW!!!!

soupcan
Jul 12 2007 08:01 AM

I realize that you are in mourning but the profanity is simply not necessary.

The New York Times website via its 'AcrossLite' program says that the the answer is 'THEFONZ'.

Whatever answer that both cooby and I had going down that started with a 'C' and was the last letter in the answer to the leather jacket wearing sitcom character was wrong.

HahnSolo
Jul 12 2007 08:23 AM

Hahn, your thoughts on your contribution of THEFONZ to this thread:

"I'm just doin' what I gotta' do. I don't get many chances to contribute, so when the manager gives me the call, I gotta get it done.

I'm watchin' from the bench, sometimes it's hard to come through, but my teammates were counting on me. I had to pick up Cooby, she was struggling with that C, but that's what we do here.

I just gotta let the puzzle come to me, that's all. Be myself."

Do you see more puzzle time for yourself in the future?

"Nah, I'm just keepin it real. When a word comes to me, I'll be there cheering on my teammates."

How does it feel to come off the bench like that and start a rally?

"Well, that's a great feeling, but I'd just like to thank Omar and Willie for bringing me here and giving me this opportunity, and of course my lord and savior, Jesus, and my family and the mothers of my children."

Thanks Hahn.

Hahn Solo, very funny :)

Actually, I changed Cornet to Zenith (using THEFONZ) and from there the whole puzzle came together

So thanks, everyone!

seawolf17

What clue could possibly yield either "cornet" or "zenith"? Those two words, on the surface, have nothing in common.
