Will They Suck Again? Orange Basketball '07-'08

Too soon?

Anyway... aside from the exciting news regarding the incoming freshmen, the university has formally announced that Mike Hopkins will take over the head coaching duties for Jim Boeheim.

Whenever Boeheim decides to call it quits.

I like it. He's a great recruiter, and he's already been coaching with the program something like 12 years if I'm not mistaken.

I think it's great that Syracuse thought ahead and will reward a coach from within, but Boeheim isn't that close to retiring is he?

I don't think so.

Boeheim's been there as a coach for 32 years. As a player an additional 3. When the Big East expanded a couple of years ago he made cryptic comments to the effect that he would only be there another 5 years.

So maybe he wants three more years to make it an even 35 as a coach.

I wonder how binding that title is. What happens if it comes out in a year that Mike Hopkins has violated several NCAA rules and has sex with goats? Does he still get the job?

Hopefully he can be replaced by a guy who makes threes.

But seriously, I felt like this year would have been a big step forward in his development. Looks like Boeheim will have to run Josh Wright out there a lot more often than he'd like.

On the other hand, the incoming class looks great.

Official announcement...?

Today's NYTimes...

Hopkins Is Boeheim’s Designated Successor at Syracuse
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Jim Boeheim has known for a while who he wanted to succeed him as head coach of the Syracuse Orange when he decides to retire, and now it's official that assistant coach Mike Hopkins is the man.

Hopkins said Tuesday that he had reached an agreement on a plan to succeed the Hall of Fame coach.

"Just to be thought of like that by a guy who I respect, one of the greatest coaches of all time, it's very flattering. I'm very humbled," said Hopkins, who grew up in California. "Syracuse is the place where I got married. I've been here now 18 years. He (Boeheim) is just constantly telling me new things and just educating me. Being around Coach and being around (associate head coach) Bernie (Fine), I've had a great bunch of mentors. They've really been there for me."

Hopkins, who played guard at Syracuse from 1988 to 1993, is in his 13th season on Boeheim's staff.

"Jim isn't going anywhere, but Mike is my next coach," athletic director Daryl Gross said, adding that it was premature to talk about the future because Boeheim has given no indication he plans to retire anytime soon.

Gross declined to offer details of the agreement in deference to Boeheim, who turns 63 in November and has given no indication he plans to retire anytime soon. In 31 seasons at his alma mater, Boeheim has a 750-264 record and has led Syracuse to 25 NCAA tournament appearances, three Final Fours and the 2003 national championship.

Boeheim was in meetings Tuesday and not immediately available for comment.

Hopkins, a Syracuse captain for Boeheim in 1992 and 1993, joined his staff in 1995 and five years later was given his first chance to recruit. He has lured Gerry McNamara, Hakim Warrick, Demetris Nichols, sophomore Paul Harris and current freshman Jonny Flynn to Syracuse.

Boeheim has been Hopkins' biggest supporter and designating Hopkins as the heir apparent eliminates the chance Hopkins might leave to take a head coaching job elsewhere.

Hopkins was a fan favorite when he played, known for his hustle and scrappy play. He expects to bring those elements to the bench.

"I'm going to coach how I played. I'm going to hug and kiss you after the game, and I'm sure during practice the competitive fire will come out a little bit," Hopkins said. "That's what's fun. I love the relationships in recruiting. I love the relationships in the community. This thing is a family. It's not about me or these other guys. It's about the bigger picture."

In May, ESPN cited multiple sources in reporting that Hopkins would be officially named as Boeheim's successor but said there was no timetable. The ESPN report said the university had reached an agreement to put a succession plan in writing and said the move had been in the works for months.

University officials said at the time there was nothing to report.

Not so fast...

]In interviews with the Daily Orange and the Post-Standard of Syracuse, N.Y., Syracuse University athletics director Daryl Gross shot down an Associated Press report that an agreement is in place to make assistant coach Mike Hopkins the successor to longtime coach Jim Boeheim and said his comments to the AP had been taken out of context.

"That story is not very accurate, and I find that it's very premature to even be talking about it, and I indicated that to them," Gross told the Daily Orange. "Everything that they talked to me about has totally been taken out of context, and I'm not very appreciative of what was reported."

Well, they played an actual game. 80-71 exhibition win over St. Rose, in which Boeheim played the kids a lot. Josh Wright didn't even suit up.

Donte Greene / Johnny Flynn could be the real deal. Greene is 6'11" (I had no idea) and can shoot the three (made 3 of 4). Flynn had 9 assists, only one turnover.

Of course, the rest of the team turned the ball over 20 times... hopefully they can work on that.

Glad to have Onuaku back as well.

The Rams of Fordham head to the Dome Friday night. I don't hold out much hope that Fordham will win, but will point out that they return 5 senior starters from an Atlantic 10 team that won 18 games last year. So they are not a pushover.

Fordham should at least make a game of it, though I suspect the Orange will not overlook anybody after last year's Drexel loss.

I'm really excited about the start of this season. I know it's a young team, and there will be some growing pains, but I have heard great things about this recruiting class. Plus, the last time we featured a freshman forward, a freshman point guard and a sophomore following a disappointing freshman year, things turned out pretty good.

I'm hoping this team gets itself ranked and makes the Sweet 16 this year.

I had a hard time watching that one.

Turned it on at the start and they are down 10-0.

Turned it off to put the kids to bed.

Turned it back on and they are up something like 18-17. They proceed to promptly blow that lead and go back down before going into halftime up 33-30.

Turned it off at the half to do some other things.

Turned it back on shortly after halftime and they are up 10. They blow that lead and its a tie game again.

The last 5 minutes they could not pull away and it was anybody's game.

Jonny Flynn (bitches!) hits a 3 while I'm screaming at him not to, which appears to ice the game but St. Joe's still manages to get a good look for a possible game-tying last shot.

Whew.

I like Flynn (bitches!).

With Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr. gone, this isn't quite as formidable a team as Ohio State had last season. This game should serve as a good test to evaluate where Syracuse is in their development as a team at this early juncture in the season.

DON'T GET FOOLED BY FRESHMAN HYPE

December 18, 2007 -- COUNT me among the guilty.

The Jimmy V Classic was played in the Garden two weeks ago, and in advance of the doubleheader, we hyped the appearance of three of the nation's best freshmen - Kansas State's Michael Beasley, Southern Cal's O.J. Mayo and Derrick Rose of Memphis.

Beasley was banged around by Notre Dame tight end/power forward Luke Harangody and got his 19 points and 8-of-20 shooting to complement 13 boards. Harangody had 19 and 14.

Mayo had 16 points on 8-of-20 shooting, and Rose had nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists but committed five turnovers and missed 6-of-9 shots.

Fans sitting behind press row who were expecting the arrival of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce were disappointed.

"I think those kids are terrific, but they're playing in their seventh, eighth or ninth game in college," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a recent telephone interview. "That's not why we've had the success that we've had in college, by marketing individuals.

"The NBA has done that, and I think they've been successful. But they're two totally different marketing schemes, and if we fall into the one the NBA uses, we fall a distant second in our product, a distant second. Because if you're marketing someone for one year and then they go, it's just the next new person."

Krzyzewski brings his Blue Devils (10-0) to the Garden Thursday for a showdown against Pitt (10-0), and both teams have terrific freshmen in Kyle Singler and Taylor King for Duke and DeJuan Blair for Pitt. But I'll heed Coach K's words and keep on an Duke senior DeMarcus Nelson, who's finally healthy and Pitt's junior Sam Young.

*

There are two reasons Eric Devendorf's season-ending left knee injury is devastating for Syracuse. The junior shooting guard could spell freshman Jonny Flynn at the point. Flynn will log a ton of minutes because senior Josh Wright, who did not come to practice, apparently has left the team.

The second reason lies in the numbers. If the Orange (7-3) are going to succeed this season they'll have to outscore teams. Syracuse is second in the Big East in scoring (86.2 points) and second to last in scoring defense, allowing 78.6. Devendorf was averaging 17 points.

*

Louisville is looking at one of its most disappointing seasons ever. The football team, which began the season ranked in the Top 10, went 6-6 and won't play in a bowl. The Cards' upperclassmen, who had grown disgruntled playing for Bobby Petrino, a very poor man's Larry Brown, quit on first-year coach Steve Kragthorpe.

The hoops team has gone into the tank following the season-ending injury to center David Padgett. Former New Jersey prep star Derrick Caracter has been suspended again. The Cards (5-3) have lost two straight and 3-of-5.

Some are questioning AD Tom Jurich. But those in the business will tell you he's one of the savviest AD's in college. And don't think Rick Pitino won't find a way to get the Cards back.

They're just not deep enough to truly compete in the league right now... whether it's foul trouble ('Nova game) or just fatigue (last night) it seems like every game is going to be an uphill fight.

Cuse's Jardine linked to stolen card
Freshman suspended from team indefinitely by coach

Posted: Wednesday January 30, 2008 3:21PM; Updated: Wednesday

January 30, 2008 3:21PM
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Suspended Syracuse University basketball player Scoop Jardine knew that a stolen student identification card was being used to order more than $100 worth of food, according to court documents.

Jardine didn't eat any of the food but helped carry it in when it was delivered to his apartment on Jan. 13, then tried to cover up his involvement, according to the documents, which are based on a statement from Jardine's cousin, Robert Washington, 40, of Philadelphia, who was charged in the case.

Washington was arraigned Tuesday in Syracuse City Court on felony charges of second-degree forgery and fourth-degree grand larceny and a misdemeanor count of third-degree identity theft. He was held overnight in the and released Wednesday to the probation department's pretrial release program.

Washington admitted in a written statement that he signed the receipt for the purchase of the food. He also said Jardine was there when using the stolen card was discussed. Washington said a woman identified in court papers as a friend of Jardine said she had found the identification card at a local restaurant.

Jardine, a freshman from Philadelphia, was suspended indefinitely from the team before Sunday's home game against Providence. Coach Jim Boeheim announced the suspension after the game but declined to elaborate.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said he had no plans to prosecute Jardine after senior members of his staff reviewed the case and decided Jardine's involvement was minimal enough to allow the university to handle the matter internally.

Jardine remains enrolled as a student, said Kevin Quinn, the university's vice president of public affairs. While the university tries to handle its disciplinary cases within 30 days, there is no set timeframe and each case is different, Quinn said.

Quinn declined further comment, citing federal privacy laws.

Jardine, who could not be reached for comment, did not practice Monday or Tuesday and did not accompany the team for its game at DePaul on Wednesday night.

Washington's lawyer, James McGraw, said Wednesday that his client maintains Jardine was not involved in any criminal wrongdoing.

"There is no indication from my conversations with my client that Scoop had anything to do with acquiring the card," McGraw said. "The first time it was used, Scoop was in West Virginia. He was never involved."

Syracuse played an afternoon game at West Virginia on Jan. 13.

Yep. That's two games against top-20 teams, lost by a last-second miss. I like Flynn taking those shots, especially last night. Greene couldn't make anything. This team doesn't quit.

Thabeet is a monster. I would have liked to see them try to draw some fouls against the guy, since UConn isn't very deep either. Easier said than done, I guess.

If you added up all the teams in the NCAA tournament (64) and the teams in the NIT (32) it's still the top third of all Division I basketball programs in the country.

And there are quite a few teams in the NCAA tournament receiving automatic bids from (let's face it) lesser conferences who probably aren't as good as the top half of teams in the NIT.

Sure, we'd all like to see our favorite team in the "big dance" but it's not like getting invited to the NIT means you suck.

Un-freakin-believable.

Obviously the pace of the game didn't favor SU, a young team with zero depth... but come on. So many missed layups. Donte missing three out of four free throws at the end. Ah well.

I had feeling when they built the lead up to 18 points or so, and the camera caught Flynn and Greene laughing, they might not hold the lead.

soupcan
Mar 26 2008 07:21 AM

No excuses for blowing a 20+ point second half lead - but - as 'Head said - their lack of depth, due mostly to injury, killed them all year and was a huge factor last night. The zebras also missed several UMass fouls toward the end of the game.

With Devendorf and Rautins back next year assuming all these young guys return - this will be a team to be reckoned with.

I have heard rumos that there is a movement gaining support in both the NBA and NCAA to make it two years beyond your high school class graduation before a player is eligible for the draft. Apparently, many in the NBA are growing tired of drafting and paying large sums of money to players that are physically and emotionally not mature enough to play at the professional level.

Of course that's the reason!!
They want someone else (ie. the colleges) to train and weed out these players so that;
a) they make fewer mistakes in the drafts
and
b) they don't have to spend a dime training and storing these guys in a minor league or development system

]They apparently believe that the only way to control themselves is to legislate rule changes so that everyone has to go along.

A process which would be illegal in just about any other business. They'll get away with it if the player's union agrees to it like they did when they moved the age of draft up one year a few seasons ago -- although why the likes of Kobe, Garnett, LeBron, and the others who were successful with either just one year of college ball or none at all would want to shut off that avenue as even a possibility is beyond me. Nothing like slamming the door behind you once you're through it.

And of course the NCAA is ready to jump throught he ceiling to sign off on this.
Any rule that virtually requires the top talent in the country to have to go through their system **For Free** for two years is A-OK with them. Hell, they'd sign up for moving the draft age to 28.

Nymr83

I'm sure I'm missing something, but is there anything particularly wrong with the NCAA changing the rules to allow a team to draft a player and retain his rights while he goes to college and develops his game? They can take over the expenses of his scholarship for the school in the meantime.

Nymr83
Apr 12 2008 01:10 PM

I suppose the colleges might not want the NBA telling it what to do, like "dont play him tonitght we don't want you taking any chances with that minor minor injury"
theres also the scholarship issue, each team is allowed to hand out X scholarships, if the NBA is suddenly paying a guy's way does that count as one of your allocated scholarships?

these aren't major issues and i'd certainly like to see such a system, it lets the college game remain the great game that it is (its better basketball than the NBA) and maybe even get a few more talented players, while also letting the pro teams have a real place to draft and follow talent as there is no minor league system like in baseball.

Frayed Knot
Apr 12 2008 01:48 PM

Here's a suggestion to colleges who want to find a way to keep their players a bit longer:
recruit only those players who are actually interested in going to college!

AG/DC
Apr 12 2008 03:56 PM

Sure, but history suggests that you can't expect corporations to restrain themselves in a free marketplace.

The minute Kentucky beats Louisville because Louisville only recruited players explicitly in it for the four years and the degree, Lousiville would drop that policy.

Frayed Knot
Apr 12 2008 04:22 PM

Agreed.
But if they're going to go after players who have no interest in college because they're the top talent in the country (and get rich off them in the process) they then forfeit the right to complain when they're unable to rig the system to keep that top talent from playing in the top league until such time as they decide they're done with them.
