Edgy, apart from the threads you've linked, you've told many great stories about your father and his work with the police and hotels so that I feel like I know him a bit. Thanks for sharing those stories and my condolences on your loss.

Bizarre that Susanne Pleshette was brouhgt up in that archived post as her husband (ex?) Tom Poston just recently passed.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Edge. Great memories never fade.

All Purpose threads show their weak points when posts about Edgy's dad get all mingled up with posts about Jerry Fallwell.

Thanks, thanks, and thanks. It was frankly an awful five-day weekend that I wish on no one. I was on my way home to see him on Friday. I called from the road to let them know I was coming My mom seemed odd but I didn't put two and two together. Strangely, I got lost twice on a route I've driven 1000 times. By the time I hit the Belt, maybe I got a little bit more of a clue. I called Cha and she spilled the beans. Stupid cell phones.

But I'll take what I can from it, and now I know a little bit more about what I'm made of.

Thanks, coo', MFS, and 'irish. Dad had been suffering simultaneously from cancer and dementia over the last year. The dementia progressed much more aggressively than it has for the Alzheimer's patients I've known, leaving me to think that the cancer struck his brain.

He wasn't in much pain, which also leads me to believe the cancer was hitting him there.

Thanks, Monk.

Interesting sidenote from the ordeal. My mother asked me to write a brief eulogy, but when we were arranging the funeral, I was told I couldn't read it at the end of the funeral mass, because people had been abusing the privelage and working inappropriate content into the church --- talking about how the deceased "loved to party and really loved the Yankees."

I assured her that I knew exactly where she was coming from, and that I, too, hated the Yankees. She looked at me like I didn't get it and told me that I could read the eulogy (1) 15 minutes before the mass, and (2) with the content approved beforehand.

No, thank you.

But I would like to thank Yankee fans for, once again, ruining everything for everybody else.

WOW,that's just amazing, freaking yankee fans....Edgy,your Dad was a Police Officer IIRC,was that part of the service, was there lots of cops there, bagpipes?

anyway,it's good to see that you have your humor with you through this tough time.

not sure if you are intentionally being funny but some of what you are posting in this thread I find quite funny.

Edgy, your Dad was a Police Officer IIRC
A PO for 23 years and a detective for six, operating mostly out of Flatbush. He then had a successful career in hotel security rising to the top of his field as director of security at the Regency, the Plaza, and the St. Regis. He's a funny character in The Hotel: A Week in the Life of the Plaza.

He also dabbled in art and calligraphy, but, as far as I know, never drew Spider-Man or Phoebe Zeit-Geist.

was that part of the service,
You bet, but mostly understated. For some reason, Mom didn't want to focus on it. I wanted to put his shield on his casket, but she was "afraid cleaning people would grab it." Whatever. Mom wins. But the cop angle was the theme of my eulogy. No mention of Morgan Fairchild, though. Maybe I should re-write.

was there lots of cops there,
Yeah, but --- even though he was only 71 --- he outlived a lot of his contemporaries. His lontime partner (cop-partner, not gay-partner) pre-deceased him. His best friend was gunned down in the early 90s. His partner's son became the youngest captain in the NYPD, and was subsequently decorated for his heroism on September 11. He's in a spot of hot water now, because of his ties to Commissioner Kerik. He was really was a nephew to my dad, but was a --- excuse me --- fucking no-show. But I can't complain too much. The turnout was huge.

There really is nothing like a cop funeral, but that's not really what my mother wanted. I guess there's just too many cops and ex-cops out there living and dying their own self-mythology, and real cops and their wives are a little (sometimes more than a little) put-off by it.

bagpipes?
Natch. My baby cousin Brian is a member of the prestigous Iona College Bagpipe band. He begged out of his finals to come, riding the train down in full kilted costume.

not sure if you are intentionally being funny but some of what you are posting in this thread I find quite funny.
I'm something of a jackass, but my dad was a great storyteller, and we've all tried to keep his tales alive.

Several inquiries were made of me and I asked Edgy if there was a
memorial fund or charity to give to in honor his Pop's life and passing.

His Mother received help the last few months from hospice care, and so
named them as the beneficiary for anyone who wants to make a memorial
donation.

Anyone who has been in a position needing services such as these for a
terminally ill loved one can testify that these workers and volunteers are
angels on earth. They're generally underpaid by the insurance companies
and need donations to keep things going to their standards.

You can visit the Good Shepherd Hospice's website by clicking here and
their fund-raising specific page is here.

Please reference the name Arthur Hoyt so Mrs. Hoyt will know of your gift.

I really have to remember to check this forum more often. I'm terribly sorry for your loss Edgy. The guy who lives on the fourth floor of my building coaches his son's little league team. They play in a league on the West Side. He tells me there is a more competitive league, and a more laid-back league where everyone gets playing time and the kids learn all positions. He coaches in the latter. He tells me stories about the league, and when he does so, I'm reminded of soupcan jr's coach and of course, your father. He takes them for pizza and tells me he believes some of them are more interested in that than they are in the games. I hope one day I can be that kind of dad. I make a mental note to practice hitting fly balls and bubble writing.

Your love for your dad came across in the stories you told us. Keep telling those stories.
