Sunday Morning Quiz

Jose Reyes has recently made it an even 30 Mets who have lasted long enough in the blue & orange (and occasionally black) to amass 2,000 NYM ABs.
To date, among those 30, his career "walk rate" of .040 (the diff between his OBP and BA) is lower than all except for Doug Flynn's .030 - although I guess we can take solace in the fact that it's improving all the time now.

Which Met, among the other 28, has the highest rate? (and it's not particularly close)

Straw?

John Olerud?

Olerud probably didn't get enough AB's.

Keef?

Mazzilli.

Frayed Knot

Straw = 3rd (.096)
Keith (probably would have been my guess) is tied for 6th with Buddy Harrelson at .090

Olerud's 3 seasons were not enough to get him 2K ABs

Welp, I wa' wrong.

Frayed Knot
May 27 2007 10:59 AM

Mazzilli is 5th at .093

I'm out. I looked up my second guess, and he seems untoppable.

I haven't looked up my second guess (well, my third, Keith being my second) so I'll go with HoJo. He had a consistent lousy BA, and he walked a lot.

Frayed Knot
May 27 2007 11:26 AM

I should have mentioned HoJo before since he is tied with Keith & Buddy

So did I.

And not that I expect anyone to guess the whole list, I'll just put this up here and fill it in until we get the right answer.

I'll take a shot at it. Disregarding the players that have already been guessed, I'll go with Edgardo Alfonzo as my first choice. My second guess would be Rusty Staub.

I've been giving this a lot of thought this evening. I have a feeling that the player we're searching for didn't hit for a very good average. I wouldn't be surpised if we're looking for a player with a career batting average in the .240-.260 range.

That being said, I think Willets' guess of Dave Magadan is a good choice. Though he hit for a pretty high average (which goes against my theory) he was a pretty patient hitter that didn't chase many bad pitches. He didn't have much power, but he always seemed to be on base.

Johnny Dickshot
May 27 2007 09:49 PM

I got Mags too but doubt he got 2K ABs.

SI Metman
May 27 2007 11:24 PM

I'm guessing Kong could be it. He had a low average, and I'm sure he got walked now and then because of the power threat.

Frayed Knot
May 28 2007 05:55 AM

Good choice with Magadan who just barely got his 2K NYM ABs ... but he came up just short.

Oh. Now I get Edgy's thrust. (I think he had a BA below .240)

Rockin' Doc
May 28 2007 07:51 AM

The more I thought about it, it just made sense we were looking for a pretty weak stick that had a good eye and was patient at the plate. Great, so now all we need to do is think of a poor hitter that garnered at least 2000 at bats for the Mets.

Rey Ordonez would certainly qualify on the low average and ample playing time, but he was so pathetic offensively that he didn't even draw walks with much regularity. Another weak hitting shortstop would be Rafael Santana, but I doubt he was with the Mets long enough to compile the required 2000 at bats.

Ooh, ooh, I think I have a good shot at it. How about Ron Hodges? He was with the Mets for an eternity and he never did hit for much of an average.

Edgy DC
May 28 2007 08:02 AM

Hodges is a good guess, as he would be second on that list with .102, but he didn't garner 2,000 at-bats. He didn't even reach 1,500.

But you did well, clearly recalling the words from "Wouldn't It Be Nice?"

It's nice when you're a catching lefthand batter
And you have a decent OBP

Rockin' Doc
May 28 2007 08:33 AM

Wow, Ron Hodges was a Met for more than 10 years and he still didn't garner 1,500 at bats? That's an awful lot of splinters he collected over the years.

Wayne Garrett!

Frayed Knot
May 28 2007 09:18 AM

Garrett it is!!
Not just a less-than obvious name but also it was the size of the margin that struck me as I was looking at this stuff!!

All of which leads to the thought - spoke here at least once by one of ira's past identities (which is why I thought he'd be the one to guess it) - that in a more Sabermetric age Garrett would have been a more appreciated player. Plus, if you were to stick 'Red' into not only a more Sabermetric age but also a more weight-lifting and "nutrition" aware age he could have been a real monster since his main drawback was that he finishes 21st out of that group of 30 in "Isolated Slugging" avg (diff between BA & Slg).

Ahh, what could have been!

FWIW, one memorist at UMDB suggests that lifting weights might have been an issue with garrett even back in his playing days. That is, Seaver wasn't fond of Garrett because Garrett was a warning track guy who wasn;t interested in becoming more than that.
