We almost named our band "Speonk" in high school for that reason. I always loved "Syyyyyyyyyosset" as a kid also.

I've never heard it, but Irving Berlin wrote a song about Yaphank. It's called "Yip Yip Yaphank!"

(For any non Long Islanders, it's pronounced Yap-Hank, not YaFank.)

Up to a few years ago, it was thought that "buckeye" was an old Indian word that meant "Can't beat Michigan".
