Mets steal a run...Beltran scores from first on the throw trying to get him out stealing second.

1-0 Good guys...top 1.

Beltraan singles, steals 2nd, throw to 2nd hits off him and becomes a gapper into left center, and he ends up scoring!
Nice :)

Wow. Pudge.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 02:16 PM

AWWWWW MAN.
Sheffs crazy swing almost chops Castros arm off.
He was shaken up a lil, but ok.

There oughta be a rule against a batter hitting a catcher with the bat if that catcher is on the Mets.

Jun 09 2007 02:19 PM

Guillen's got game.

TransMonk
Jun 09 2007 02:20 PM

Guillen with a 3 run bomb in the 1st...grrr.

3-1 Tigres...bottom of 1.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 02:24 PM

Carlos Guillen crushes a 3 run homer to left.
That pitch was left out over the plate by Perez, who had 2 strikes on Guillen.

Pudge follows with a double but Perez gets out of that.

Perez has made some good pitches but seems he's not concentrating at 100% capacity.

Tigers-3 Mets -1

Jun 09 2007 02:52 PM

Tiny strike zone. Perez probably trying to explode the umpire's head with his mind.

Coming into today's game the Mets had the exact same record and the exact same lead in the NL East as they had at this point last year. However, the 2006 Mets were just beginning their phenomenal stretch where they won 8 in a row during that west coast road trip.

We need some offense.

Nice fast fact TransMonk.

Yes we do.
Wheres the lumber?

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 03:07 PM

Theres that warning track power referred to in a previous IGT.
Wright just gets under one.

After 3and1/2 its 3-1 Tiggers.

Jun 09 2007 03:08 PM

How about those seagulls?

TransMonk
Jun 09 2007 03:25 PM

Second and third no outs in the top of the 5th.

Castro pops up to second.

TransMonk
Jun 09 2007 03:29 PM

Reyes with a 2 run single with 2 outs!

Tie ball game!

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 03:36 PM

Then he gets picked like a fish outta water.

He's been picked a bit lately.
I almost dont mind: just happy, seeing how he slipped, that he wasnt injured.

Score tied 3-3 (guess whose winning on my scorecard? Yes, even on the road the Met have the lead here)

TransMonk
Jun 09 2007 03:39 PM

Mets give the 2 runs right back.

5-3 Tigres, no outs in the bottom 5th.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 03:39 PM

Im very concerned by Beltraans lack of aggression chasing down fly balls.
I dont care if hes not 100%. If he's out there he has to move it.
Is he hurtin worse than we know?

Tiggers take the lead right back on a Pudgy 2 RBI single.

I think Beltran made the right play on that ground-rule double, laying low on it and waiting of a hop off the wall. Didn't seem to have a reasonable chance to make the catch, not worth the risk.

OlerudOwned
Jun 09 2007 03:57 PM

Wow, a Bonds at-bat. Who gives a shit, is he gonna hit 11 homers at once?

In news more interesting than Barry Bonds, Dan Haren is lights-out awesome. That Mulder trade was highway robbery by Beane.

Be sure Beningo will cite this play as a basis for Beltran-hatin' by Mets' fans. "He doesnt have that passion, Evan."

And we cut from Bonds to Sheffield, (roid connection!!), who doubles, drives in a run, Ordonez knocks in two more, and this game is, I think, quite over. 8-3.

Tiger are blowing it open in the 6th.

I hat late afternoon Saturday starts...I'm going to fire up the grill.

* What's the number of pickoffs for Reyes this year? Gotta be at least 4 or 5.
Those should be considered when evaluating his Steals/CS numbers - currently at 35 & 8 - when figuring how much his baserunning is really helping.
Let's say it's 5 pickoffs, then he's stolen 35 bases at the expense of 13 caught (73%) ... only marginally helping really.

* I guess this ends our 'Quality Start' streak?

* Today's first 6 innings were longer than Friday's entire game.

Bonderman knocked out by Ledee's RBI double. 2nd and 3rd, no out, 8-4. A comeback?

Zvon

TransMonk

Ledee's second double was almost exactly where his first one was, not bad for Rickey today...Mets need to cash in here for some hope.

TransMonk
Jun 09 2007 04:27 PM

Mets within 2...let's keep it going.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 04:29 PM

Gotay gets a base"knock" off Tigger pitcher Bazardo and Ledee scores to make it 8-6.

We got game!

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 04:31 PM

REYES!
Look at a pitch or two!

Come-ooooon.

Pops out.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 04:33 PM

Val keeps it goin with a double!

2 runners in scoring position for Beltraan.

I really wish network announcers (and others for that matter) would stop touting things like "most RBIs ever in Inter-League Play" as if it's a meaningful stat.

Zvon
Jun 09 2007 04:40 PM

Delgado cant get it done.

That was really the perfect scenario, especially with how hot Delgado has been lately.

Dagggggnabbitt.

metsguyinmichigan
Jun 09 2007 04:41 PM

Aw, Carlos.

I gave up when it was 5-3, then saw it was 8-6 and ran back downstairs to watch.

Fear not, though. The Tigers have a backdraft bullpen and we have two more chances to get to it.

Frayed Knot
Jun 09 2007 04:45 PM

Well that inning could have been better, but at least it got us back into the game.
Now the meat of the pen has to redeem itself from their recent transgressions.

Wright with a solo shot...down by one.

Frayed Knot

Wow!
I didn't think that Wright HR was going to be anywhere near going out.

metsguyinmichigan
Jun 09 2007 05:01 PM

I'm telling you, their bullpen is in shambles! We can do this!

Frayed Knot
Jun 09 2007 05:06 PM

Unfortunately we can't pinch-run for Castro
Might take 4 consecutive hits to get him in.

OlerudOwned
Jun 09 2007 05:17 PM

Here comes awful closer/homophobe Todd Jones to try to protect the lead against the top of the order.

Who's going to step up? Who's going to be the hero? It's time for a rally song.

Was there on Friday and for this game.

Delgado had the two chances to get it done, 7th and 9th -- but really, it was the 7th, with 3 men on that was our real chance to win the game.

Todd Jones -- with a 5.79 ERA coming into the game, and 4 blown saves -- is a fairly big mystery. How can he be effective? He had a total of 11 BBs and 9 Ks going into the game. I guess Detroit has a pretty good defense but still, it doesn't make sense. With all the closers we've gotten to this year (Fuentes, Dempster, Benitez, Valverde) I was really hopeful we could add one to that list.

I was surprised that they didn't keep Gotay in the game after his successful pinch-hitting apperance. Seemed strange, they could've put Valentin in left (or Gotay, he seems athletic, he could try LF too).

Mota also totally killed us. Sele looked good, given that he had not pitched in 2 weeks, I believe.

Comerica thoughts:

I'd been there once before but have been to several other new parks since for some comparison. I like the layout and the dowtown setting, but Detroit's downtown is, of course, not exactly a great place. You can see where improvements were made for the Super Bowl but not a ton of progress has been made. Depressing.

The big thing with several of the big sports bars is to offer free parking and shuttle bus service to the stadium. There are a few that are still located next to Tiger Stadium.

We had seats down the right field line both games, once closer in, where the seats were kinda cramped (and I'm not exactly a huge person with long legs, either). Seemed to be wider (and not just more leg room) in a lower down row. The open concourse wasn't quite as good as I've seen it. Concessions stands galore made lines very short but the bathroom lines were very very long. All games this weekend were sold out, but I thought the point was to have enough for that sort of game.

Great use of music at Comerica (appropriately). They play "Dancing in the Street" after their wins. Scoreboard is very good with the exception of the out-of-town scoreboard (way too small, not visible from everywhere). The main scoreboard puts up lots of situational statistics and they do a good job of finding the worst possible situational stats (ie. Beltran is hitting .189 with runners on 2nd and 3rd) for their opponents.

Detroit fans love them some Tigers merch. Seemed like *everybody* was wearing Tigers apparel. I liked that they had player name and number shirts for seemingly every position player regular, most of the starters as well as Zumaya and Jones. Nice (as opposed to Reyes, Wright, Delgado, Beltran, Wagner, which is all the Mets seem to ever have).
