KTE: Detroit Tigers (June 8, 9, 10)

-versus-

The Mets go into MoTown to face a powerful Tiger team that is currently leading the Majors in runs per game (5.95), total runs (351), hits (616), doubles (143) triples (20), batting average (.290), slugging (.481) and is tied for third in OBP (.351) and homeruns (74).

Our boys on the otherhand, while dealing with injuries, and a frustrating ‘NOffense‘ as a result, have still been pitching rather effectively and will counter the Tigers punch with a pitching staff that has numbers just as good as the Tigers’ bats. The Mets have the third best ERA in the Majors (3.42) while allowing only a Major League best 7.5 hits per game.

The way to beat the Tigers is to pitch well and get to their bullpen which these days resembles the Mets outfield - injuries, call-ups and bad performances. Zumaya is on the DL as is set-up man Fernando Rodney. Jason Grilli and Bobby Seay have been seeing time and are hittable. Closer Todd Jones has blown 4 saves this season and has an ERA of 5.79 in 23 innings.

The two teams are 3-3 in head to head competition – The Mets being swept at Tiger Stadium in 1997 and the Amazin’s returning the favor when the Tigers came to The Big Shea in 2004.

Pitching Matchups:

Friday:
Jorge Sosa (5-1, 3.22)
Chad Durbin (5-1-4.75)

Durbin hasn't lost in 10 starts since his first outing of the season, he did however give up five runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Indians on last Saturday. It was the most runs he's allowed since mid-April.

Saturday:
Oliver Perez (6-4, 2.80)
Jeremey Bonderman (5-0, 3.27)

Bonderman is also unbeaten in his first 10 starts this season, getting ND’s in his first 5 and then winning his last 5. He lost his only appearance against the Mets in 2004.

Sunday:
Tom Glavine (5-3, 3.36)
Andrew Miller (1-0, 0.00)

This will be rookie Miller’s, second start of the season. He was called up to replace Nate Robertson in the rotation. Miller, 22, was 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA in eight relief appearances last season. In his first career start on May 18th against the Cardinbals he pitched six shutout innings and threw 94 pitches. Miller will be recalled from Double-A Erie, where he is 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA after four starts for the SeaWolves.

I like that the Tigers recently called up a reliever by the name of Yorman Bazardo. They should make him grow a long pointy beard and talk to the baseball, if he doesn't do those things already. Checking... nah, he doesn't.

Whatchu mean? Dat Bazardo ain' my man. He got to be yorman, yo.

Cool KTE. I submitted a registration at the Tigers board in hopes of chatting with those peeps about our teams over the weekend.

The losing streak aside, I've been looking forward to this series for a while...the World Series that should have been.

Sheffield's been ridiculously hot (and absurdly stupid) over the last week.

It could be worse as we do miss facing Verlander

Sunday's starter Miller was the top college pitcher out of last year's draft (UNC). He & Bazooka Joe Smith are two of just 4 from that draft already in the majors. He's potentially a front of the rotation-type pitcher.

I shall be there bright and early on Sunday.

I bought my daughter two new Mets t-shirts for the occasion.

What to wear is actually a very important decision and I'm wrestling with the options. Reaction from Tigers fans is not an issue. They are not to be feared.

1) Faith and Fear in Flushing retired numbers t-shirt. Classy, for sure. But this situation might call for something a little more in-your-face. It will be a foundation garment under a jersey at the very worst.

2) Mitchell and Ness 1969 Seaver home jersey: I usually just trot this out for special occasions since I'm afraid to spill anything on it.

3) 1992 Eddie Murray home jersey. Racing stripes, pinstripes, button down. Own name on back. Hmmmm.

4) 1993 Eddie Murray home jersey. It's the one with the tail under the Mets. Metstradamus calls it "The Wardrobe of Failure" and he is correct.

5) 2005 Pedro Martinez National League All-Star jersey. Game was in Detroit. Again, might not be in-your-face enough.

6) 2001 Robin Ventura black road jersey. Nothing good happens in the black jerseys. Will leave this home.

7) Mercury Mets jersey and cap. Might scare little kids.

8) 1993 Bobby Bonilla road jersey: Scares ME.

9) Mel Rojas game-used road batting practice jersey. REALLY scares me.

10) 2004 orange batting practice jersey. Makes me look like a pumpkin with blue sweat stains.

Right now I'm leaning toward the '92 Murray home.

You should sell the Seaver jersey and concentrate only on obscure and/or bizzarre Met jerseys as you seem to have a good collection going.

--- Hold on. Not exactly true. Kenny Bleeping Rogers is on the DL right now, but he's on the Tigers roster.

Can't blame you for forgetting. I've tried to purge his brief -- but not brief enough -- Mets career from my memory.

Just...throw...a...strike......AHHHHHHHHH

No, but I do have a cool old photo button. Across the street from Tiger Stadium there was one of those ancient souvenir shops that had stuff on the shelves that had been there years and years. Some really fun things.

I'd go there just about every time I went to Tiger Stadium just to see of anything new had been unearthed from the stockroom. And one day I found one of those photo pins of our man Rusty for something like a buck. Naturally I pounced!

My of my game-worn stuff is from either bad players, chubby players or coaches. That's because A) that's what I can afford, and B) I only get ones that I can wear.

One of my favorites is a Duffy Dyer jersey from when he was a Brewers coach. Sweet!

I really liked Tiger Stadium. I attended a few games there in 1988. I had a co-worker from Chicago who thought I was nuts, but I think Tiger Stadium had a lot more charm than Wrigley Field.

I'm glad it's still standing. I hope they somehow find a use for it so that it can survive.

It's demolition, pending an approval vote from the City Council, was recently announced.

To read that forum linked above, Tiger fans don't quite sound like they're about to chain themselves up in front of the bulldozers.

Oh well. I figured the odds were long.

I don't think I'll be doing that bulldozer-chaining thing either.

You're right. Vance Wilson too - also on the DL.

Well, he'd clobber the bulldozers. And Bruce Banner would be nearby, and he'd get agitated, and he'd turn into the Hulk, and a big battle would get underway, and Tiger Stadium would be inadvertently destroyed.

Tiger Stadium was a fun place. I enjoyed going there. We lived an hour away while I worked in Flint. One day the paper let me do a story about how they get the stadium ready for Opening Day, and I spent a day having complete access of the park. We were on the roof, in the clubhouse, the sunken bullpens -- everything.

On thing what was really cool -- in the visitors' clubhouse, the walls were white tile and visiting players had been autographing the ceramic tiles. Hundreds of them. We probably spent an hour reading them.

One thing I wish I didn't see: Crews painting the grass green. It was actually mixture of dye and fertilizer. I guess I should have realized there was a reason their grass was so green that early in the season, but I never thought about it.

I made a trip out to visit Tiger Stadium during it's last season. I thought it was a great old ballpark on par with Fenway & Wrigley.

Notes: Dealing with dreary clubhouse

Comerica no more welcoming to visitors than older parks

By Marty Noble / MLB.com

DETROIT -- In almost every ballpark, new or old, the clubhouses are located on the lower levels, usually the lowest, and never exposed to daylight. They can be dreary places and usually are, particularly the visiting clubhouses that are, for the most part, smaller than those of the home teams.
Syd Thrift, who served as general manager for several clubs, including the Yankees and Pirates, theorized that dreary living conditions would lead to dreary performance, and so he endorsed use of low-wattage bulbs in the visiting clubhouse in parks where he worked.

Well, Thrift would have approved of the visiting clubhouse at Comerica Park. It is a dreary place and belies its age, given that the park opened in 2000. The cinder-block walks have been painted a faded mustard color. Some ceiling tiles are strained, others are out of place or missing. And the clubhouse is cramped with many small rooms, some with slanted ceilings as if they were post-construction afterthoughts.

That said, the Mets' quarters this weekend are significantly larger, nicer and more open than the visiting clubhouse in Tiger Stadium. When the Mets played there in 1997, Todd Hundley called it a slum, and he wasn't the first to do so. Bobby Valentine said the manager's office was too small to change clothes, so he stepped outside and used the old line, "So small, I couldn't change my mind, either."

John Franco is said to have told big Butch Huskey he could enter only if he removed his freckles.

"They take up too much room," Franco told the massive former Met. "Get rid of them or those shouders."
