Zambrano-Barrett fight

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 01 2007 08:02 PM

I've already lost what thread this was discussed in, but apparently the few seconds you see in the dugout was only the half of it.

They got into again in the clubhouse and Barrett landed in the hospital with a split mouth, according to Lou Pinellia who loses it at the end of his postgame conference.

Lou's conference. He tries to keep the details from the writers, then gives in, then they get him so mad he starts to lose it at the very end.

This was uglier that ugly.
Barrett with two black eyes and stitches in his lip.

From what I saw, Zambrano was the instigator.
Disgraceful behavior.

Lou did lose it, and maybe it was my imagination, but he seemed to infer that Barrett "missed" the pitch that started the whole rukus and he has
"players that cant catch baseballs".
Sure, that pitch got by Barrett, but I dont see how he can be given fault.
If it wasnt a crossup between him and Zambrano then he has unbelieveable movement on his pitches. As far as Barretts subsequent throw into the outfield,...that was bad.

It was ugly, ugly stuff.

Lou missed the boat-- rather than saying, "teammates shouldn't fight each other-- they should fight the other team (if they need to)" he should have said that grown men should never fight.

Really, unless it involves protecting your family there is no need for adults to get into fisticuffs-- and now that the scene has been shown a bazillion times, how many little leaguers will try to re-enact that scene this morning.

Does anyone think this will scare away some teams from Zambrano?,or if not scare away then certainly make them question weather they should go for him if he becomes a FA.

I never really bought this argument.

I think his .500 record and climbing ERA will have more to do with detracting suitors, but he does have a penchant for prima donna antics, showing up umpires and teammates.

He'll garner some interest to be sure, since he is only 26 and is very talented, but he can forget about "Zito dollars". Last winter, there was talk of $100 million plus for him...I think he's come down a good deal, now, and his antics, coupled with his performance are both to blame.

What argument? That grown men shouldn't fight? Or that kids mimic thier role models?

Pinella is a fine one to be talking about self control and not fighting given his history. He has always been a hot head that has trouble controlling his temper. When he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds, he got in a well publicized fight with his reliever Rob Dibble in the clubhouse.

I can understand people getting made and upset with others from time to time, but other than in the case of self defense there is no need to let things escalate to a physical confrontation.

The club is apparently going to decide on discipline for both Barrett & Zambrano. Be interesting to see if they come to the conclusion that one was more at fault than the other.
Just speculation, but just before the paws started flying Barrett pointed somewhere out on the field. My guess is that it was toward the scoreboard where he added something along the lines of; "well maybe that one was my fault but who gave up those other 13 hits that are out there big boy?"

Also be interesting to see if they decide that those two are an unworkable marriage and try to move one or both. Between this, plus Zambrano's slow start and his impending FA-gency and the impending sale of the club, this might just give them extra motivation to try to get something for him before the trading deadline.
Would be an expensive and risky half-year rental for whoever wants to give it a go, but there's also potential for a big upside.

We should trade for this Zambrano character, I'd bet that Peterson could fix him in 10 minutes.

Assuming Zambrano didn't hit him first.

Seriously, I hate the sound of any trade that has the Mets acquiring someone named Zambrano.

With the lineup that we have out there today, IMO, Carlos Zambrano would be batting 5th if he were pitching...and if he got pissy with his catcher, I think that Shrek (Ramon Castro) would be a pretty even matchup with him...sLowDuca would probably be in worse shape than Barrett, but that ball probably wouldn't have gotten passed Paul, so he wouldn't have been mad at him anyhow...

2 pitchers that are hot heats that I'd be interested in seeing whether Mellow Rick Peterson could get them to mellow out a bit are: Carlos Zambrano & Scott Olsen...I think that the Marlins might be running out of patience with Olsen, who has great stuff, but is supposedly very difficult to deal with...

I think it's wishful thinking to think slugger will stop hitting people in the dugout and clubhouse because our catcher will be better.

Zambrano - in addition to having a few marbles rolling around in the attic - is one big mofo.

Massive love-fest out of Chicago today. I guess if you're going to have two guys on your team rumble, this is exactly how you'd want it to play out the next day. Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? Whatever you say, Carlos.

Zambrano, Barrett put dugout scuffle behind them

Associated Press

Updated: June 2, 2007, 2:23 PM ET

CHICAGO -- Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano blamed himself for Friday's fight with teammate Michael Barrett that started in the dugout, resumed in the clubhouse and left the catcher needing six stitches at a hospital.

"It's all my fault," Zambrano said Saturday. "That's all I can say. I feel bad for that."

The Cubs fined Zambrano and Barrett an undisclosed amount. Neither player was suspended.

The outburst came during the fifth inning of Friday's 8-5 loss to Atlanta. Barrett wound up with a bruise below his left eye and a cut lower lip. He said he and Zambrano have had their differences, but it never became physical until Friday. He said there's no need for the pitcher to apologize.
Fighting Mad at Wrigley

"I think it happened because Zambrano and I are so close," he said. "I think of him like a brother. It's like a sibling rivalry."

The Cubs had lost nine of 11 and were 22-30 entering Saturday, and frustrations finally boiled over.

"There's no need for what happened," manager Lou Piniella said. "The important thing is there's no continuation."

The Braves had scored five runs in the top of the fifth when Zambrano and Barrett went at it in the dugout. Zambrano pointed at his head and screamed at Barrett, who allowed a run to score on a passed ball and throwing error.

"I was just telling him, 'Are you out of your mind?'" Zambrano said, referring to the gesture.

Barrett yelled back while pointing toward the field, and matters escalated. Zambrano shoved Barrett and slapped him. He had his right fist cocked as the two were being separated. Piniella and several players escorted Zambrano to the clubhouse. Barrett went back to the clubhouse to talk to Zambrano, but there was more than talk.

"It came unexpected," Barrett said. "I just wanted to clear my mind, clear my head a bit. I underestimated what he was going through. I never would have thought it could have [happened]. I love Carlos. I know he loves me."

Neither player would reveal exactly what happened in the clubhouse.

"Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas," Zambrano said.

Zambrano and Barrett have expiring contracts, and both emphasized their loyalty to the organization.

When asked if he wants to remain a Cub, Zambrano said, "Of course."

I think it happened because Zambrano and I are so close. I think of him like a brother. It's like a sibling rivalry.

Barrett added: "I love this organization from top to bottom."

He said he looks forward to catching Zambrano again, but Piniella made clear that won't happen soon. Barrett was not in the lineup Saturday but was available.

Zambrano's emotions are his strength and weakness as a pitcher. He's off to a slow start at 5-5 with a 5.62 ERA.

This wasn't the first fight for Barrett, who touched off a bench-clearing brawl last season when he punched the White Sox's A.J. Pierzynski in the face.

"I respect this game and I respect others," Barrett said. "Sometimes our behavior speaks differently, and that's unfortunate because that's not what I'm about."

Seriously, wow! In a trancendent pummelling worthy of Dick Tracy or Mark Trail, Zambrano has punched Barrett into first place.

Wow, that was a surprise...but then again, if just about your entire pitching staff is struggling, yet the backup catcher has a 1.75 Catcher's ERA then I guess it's not really a surprise that the FA-to-be starter gets shipped off...maybe it's a good idea, when the pitching staff is underachieving, instead of firing the Pitching Coach, fire the catcher...

I doubt Barrett had any say in where he ultimately ended up. And without more info, it's hard to say who instigated the fight. The larger point I was trying to make is if you get into a fight, and your OPS is in the low .700's, if the other guy is the ace of the staff, you might not want to renew your apartment lease.
