There's been one perfect day in the Mets system so far this year, coming on May 26, as Savannah's Tobi Stoner threw six strong innings to end a six game losing streak with 4-3 victory over Columbus (Georgia, not Ohio --- this is SALlie Ball).
Also that day, Sean Henry scored a tying run for the St. Lucie Mets in the eighth innng and drove in the game-winner in the ninth as the Mets beat Dunedin 6-3. Brandon Nall got the win throwing two shutout innings in relief of a strong start by Jonathan Niese.
The perfection continued in Bighamton, as the visiting New Hampshire Fisher Cats were undone by consecutive doubles by Fernando Martinez, Caleb Stewart and Brett Harper leading to a three-run sixth inning in a 6-2 win, as manager Mako Oliveros continued leading his charges in recovery from their lugubrious start. Seventh straight win for the B-Mets.
New Orleans did their part that lovely Saturday, as Brian Lawrence marked his second start with seven innings of one-run ball, fanning two and walking none, and limiting Craig Brazell's Omaha Royals to six hits. Ivan Moldanato got the save. The losing pitcher was Billy Buckner, whose father is, you guessed it, a retail manager in Conyers, Georgia.
And, of course, the New York Mets topped the day with a cherry scoring five in the ninth for a 6-2 win over Florida, as visiting rehab ace Pedro Martinez urged them on from the dugout.
With five teams in action at this point of the season, the chance of a perfect day on dumb luck is 3.125%. But it's actually quite lower, as that doesn't take into account days off, scheduled or weather-related. Binghamton alone had 10 of thier first 16 games postponed due to rain, snow, or cold.
And dumb luck assumes all teams have a 50% chance of winning each day, and doesn't take into account how winning these teams actually are. Savannah has been clearly as bad (and worse) as the parent Mets have been good.
So enjoy your perfect days when you can.
