Today's Snooze:

Alou now sez he's doubtful for the Detroit series.

Green is optimistic to return by Sunday.

Easley sat yesterday with a sore knee that's bothered him since the Marlins series.

Schoeneweis revealed his shitty performance this season is due in part to a torn tendon behind his left knee suffered during a spring-training workout.

Chavez almost definitely will hit the DL.

What's Heilman's excuse, his numbers this season are not good to say the least,I'd not be surprised if he's carrying an injury.

Jose Valentin should be back, hope we get Green back ASAP.

I think we have to add a player. Even one day with 3.5 outfielders, one of whom (Beltran) is gimpy, seems a like a bad day when we're confronting (1) our first three-game losing streak and (2) the verge of our first sweeping.

Well, from within the organization, I guess Ricky Ledee is probably the first choice. But maybe they can consider Chip Ambres (at New Orleans) or Caleb Stewart (at Binghamton).

The logical immediate move is to DL Endy and activate Valentin who was going to be activated today anyway.
That leaves you an outfielder short until Green (as early as Sunday) and/or Alou (who knows?) gets back but hopefully Easley can take up the slack.

What sucks about this all is that Milledge would have had himself 100+ ABs by this point with more to come.

Valentin can play the OF in a pinch: He played CF in the World Baseball Classic.

The whole Alou Experiment is turning into a disaster, IMO. He's too good a hitter to be so unreliable health-wise. Now even if he came back, with Endy out he's a bigger liability because he fields and runs too poorly to help win close games.

I think we're going to have to make a play for a real hitter this summer. Ichiro?!

sharpie
Jun 07 2007 07:54 AM

Can't imagine the Mariners trading Ichiro unless they are told that there is no way they can re-sign him. If the Chisox hold a firesale then Jermaine Dye would be a good trade deadline candidate.

The problem with Alou isn't just the extended disability --- which was factored in as the Mets built their roster --- but that the backup plan has faltered with the injuries to Milledge and Chavez and the ineffectiveness of Johnson, not to mention the lousy luck of Green going down at the same time.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 07 2007 08:00 AM

Well, nobody wanted to admit it but Chavez was playing like shit in Alou's absence too.

Edgy DC
Jun 07 2007 08:07 AM

Well, yeah, but a brother gets overexposed when you've got Milledge, Johnson, Alou, Green, and finally Beltran going down in succession, and finally Johnson and Gomez looking like minor leaguers when called up. Can't really pick a brother's spots in such a situation.

Oakland may have some bats available since they have a surplus of OF: Shannon Stewart? Mark Kotsay?

Wouldn't mind if htey through in Marco Scuatro, too, though I htink they'd be more inclined to part with Bobby Crosby at this point.

The Cubs might with Jacque Jones since it looks like they want to give Felix Pie a turn in the OF.

Either deal would cost Heilman, I would think-- maybe Milledge?

Or at least he could when he had two good legs.

There's also the deal where we'll need to use a DH is 6 of the next 10 games. Exactly the kind of situation where you could use guys like Green or Alou so long as you've got a guy like Endy to cover for them.
It's not the time to be shy on outfielders right now.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 07 2007 08:11 AM

They haven't given Brother Johnson much of a shot at all. I thought PHing Chavez for him the other night was crazy for a lot of reasons, not the least of which was how poorly Chavez had been hitting.

Has the stock on Lastings fallen that much,Kotsay,Stewart?

Caleb Stewart was mentioned as a possible call up,I'd do that gladly before dealing Milledge for those guys.

I can't believe how many typos were in my post-- teach me to contribute before caffeine.

I think Heilman is more likely to go to Oakland at this point, since Milledge really does nothing to alleviate their bat surplus.

Any word on how long til Milledge is expected back?

As of May 30th Rotoworld said:

Lasting Milledge has started light running for the first time since spraining his foot.

Milledge is still several weeks away from returning to games at Triple-A New Orleans.

I did get some static for it, I'll admit.

I hope they start training Gotay for some outfield work, it'd be a shame to see him get demoted while a guy like Ledee comes up.

Suggested elsewhere in the CPF was getting LoDuca some time in LF. I don't see that hurting.

I love the Ichiro idea too. Wonder how far back Seattle has to fall to make that happen.

Endy DL'd (to no one's surprise) 4 - 6 weeks is the estimate.
Valentin activated.

Green claims he'll be ready to go on Sunday, the first day he's eligible.
So far that's merely his opinion and nothing official.

Milledge supposedly another 3 weeks away.

Who da hell knows about Alou.

Can we make up an injury for Schoenweis?

Frayed Knot
Jun 08 2007 07:01 AM

He apparently already has one, a torn tendon in his leg.
The thing about it is that I heard it described as a "useless tendon". In fact it's the one they take out of your leg to re-weave into the elbow during "Tommy John" surgery and, out of the awful lot of 'TJ' procedure survivors, I haven't seen any of them limping around.

The other thing is that in a week where Wagner, Heilman, Smith, Feliciano and Mota all got hit, I'm not sure it's 'let's dump on Schoeneweis' time. He hasn't been good, but he's also got a 3-year contract and is going to be around for a while.

HahnSolo
Jun 08 2007 07:05 AM

With a 1.92 WHIP, I reserve my right to dump on Schoenweis.

But I agree he's not the only culprit.

No good news from Alou's checkup.

Preston Wilson is slugging .313, so don't suggest him unless you're a crazy gamblin' man.

A two-week tryout of Brady Clark (awful for the Dodgers this year) would only cost us the roster spot.

Word is the Rangers will soon commence selling everything not nailed down. Brad Wilkerson might come cheap.

Fans of clueless liar managers should check out rookie Ranger skipper Ron Washington by the way. The following quotes are all from the same interview:

]"When you lose, the heat falls on the manager. I can take that. What I don't like is my players being put in the middle of it. You'll never find where I threw a player under the bus."

]"I've always said if there's someone to blame, blame me, 'cause I'm in charge. I can handle that. But anybody watching baseball, and watching our games, there ain't no way that they can say that Ron Washington is the reason."

]"I'm no fool. I know you're judged on wins and losses. We're not winning. So when you're not winning, you take heat, and I can live with that."

]"I'm only as good as players perform. If players don't perform, I get stuck with it, but I can live with that. That comes with the job. But that certainly don't take away from my knowledge, or my approach and what I know to be right. I'm about one thing: right and wrong. Not about the other [bull]."

I'm not expecting Alou back anytime soon, if at all. Certainly not before Chavez is ready. Can we rely on a Gomez/Ledee platoon until August?

Milwaukee's got a surplus of outfielders. Kevin Mench could be had for a bag of balls and some pine tar. Geoff Jenkins would probably not be completely out of the question either...though we'd have to part with major league middle relief.

Based on what I've seen, hell no. That said, if Beltran were hitting like the MVP candidate of last year, I wouln'td mind platooning Bobby and Cindy Brady out there. No one spot is the issue.

Oh, and bat Captain Redass second please. I don't know that it'll help, but do it for me.

Wilkerson reminds me of Rich Becker. I didn't like Rich Becker.

Checking out B-R.com, Wilkerson basically is Becker, but with twice the power. Wilkerson struck out 116 times in 320 ABs in '06. Yowza.
