Three for three

Nominated for three awards this year at the AEP banquet.

Tonight I walked off with all three, yo, including the Golden Lamp, the highest honor in educational publishing. Only the four Golden Lamp winners got to speechify. I was taken by surprise, and had go ex tempore. Nailed it.

Congratulations on being recognised for a job well done. It is a wonderful accomplishment and you have reason to be proud.

I only had you for two categories in my Aeepies Pool this year. The fuck?

Long list of people with the music cutting you off at the end, or "too many to name, but you know who you are" - style?

Congrats.

Well, I was only representing because the boss couldn't/wouldn't take the time to. I'm there on behalf of the work of others. Let's not kid ourselves.

No, but I got wierd. Up there in front of the lights, with no speech, I realized I was in the suit I bought for my dad's funeral, and wondered if he could see me. So I thanked him. Somehow, I steered that into my other remarks, and brought the tangent home.

You still deserve accolades. My offer to slap around your boss is still open.

Thanks.

Everybody at my table was a New Yorker, I think. So I opened with something like.

"It's always nice to come back and spend time with colleagues, particularly since being around so many New Yorkers makes me feel like a New Yorker again. But right now I feel like the Kansas Royals and we just beat the crap out of the Yankees."

I just got a letter from a former major leaguer. Seems he picked up a copy of our summer issue while waiting for a parent-teacher conference, and now wants to leave Wall Street to pursue secondary school teaching and coaching.

He was the "other guy" in the then-controversial Vida Blue trade.

Way to go, Edgy!

I'm sharing an award this year with a couple other reporters for our coverage of the Gerald Ford funeral back in January.
