Tim Worthington

Just noticed his name in a minor league box score (Mets A ball team). He last pitched in the organization in 2005, where he was a very effective reliever. I followed his numbers for a while.
Then, he dropped off the map.

Welcome back, kid.

Actually, he's in High A (St. Lucie):

My wife recently went on a trip to Mississippi to do some Katrina relief work. One night during her week stay, her group decided to take a bus ride into New Orleans with some of the other organizations that were volunteering there. She ended up sitting next to some guy who's son was a minor league pitcher in the Mets' organization. She immediately called me on her cell phone to tell me the news. Of course, I asked who his son was and she said, "Tim Worthington." I said, hmmm...never heard of him. She went on to tell me that he was in extended bring training recovering from an injury. I told my wife to tell Tim's dad that I hoped to be rooting hard for him with the big club in the future. I never found out what his injury was, but had always thought of adopting him.

Thanks, Monk.
Did she get the dad's name?
I've never been able to find out if Tim is related to ex-SF relief pitcher Alan "Red" Worthington.
Red was a very religious person, and doing charity work rebuilding New Orleans sounds like something he would get involved in.

I asked her...swears she wrote the father's name down somewhere. But her trip was in late April and we've moved since then, so I'm not quite sure she'd be able to find it. She didn't seem too confident when I suggested it could be Alan or Red. But if she finds it, I'll let you know.

Update on my kid:

Interesting splits. He handles lefties better than righties.
