J.A. Happs major league debut starts with a single and a LoDuca homer.

Sweet.

2-0 Mets.

welcome the majors... don't unpack your bags just yet.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:08 PM

Carlos Dee with a double. :)

I dropped Delgado from my fantasy team, and I knew once I did he'd start hitting.
And this is a good thing.

As long as he was on my team he wasnt gonna hit--the 'ol Z-Met jinx in action.

Nymr83
Jun 30 2007 02:12 PM

i would have liked to getanother run with 1st and 3rd 1 out, but this is a good start.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:13 PM

Ha-the Phil rook gives up 3 runs on 5 hits but still manages to strike out the side in the 1st.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:19 PM

That pesky Utley drives one deep to center, but not deep enough.
Sosa sets em down 1-2-3 in the 1st :)

Nymr83

nice sliding catch by Victorino

martin
Jun 30 2007 02:23 PM

i missed the start of the game, what did reyes do to his shoulder?

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:25 PM

OHH, what a catch by Victorino off Reyes in the 2nd.

I missed the very beginning of the game,--Reyes 1st at-bat.

He singled up the middle but they say he injured his shoulder.
They talk about this but dont show any replay.
Any details as to how he did this?

Happ has a smooth 2nd inning.
Mets-3
Phills-0

he tried bunting and pulling it back, it looked to me like the ball hit the bat into the shoulder, he didnt say anything til after the next pitch (a foul ball i think) and then he was talking the trainer and willie for a few minutes and again after he singled.

hmmm..freaky.

It obviously bothers him since he keeps massaging his shoulder.
Hopefully just a bruise thatll be gone in afew days.

Sosa allows a wicked line single to right by Howard and then walks Roland to open the 2nd.

Greg Dobbs just cuts a deep valley into the win probability graph for the Phils.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:37 PM

He walks Victorino. Bases phulla Phils.

I dont like the look on Sosa's face after each pitch.
Looks like he is perplexed as to where the ball is going after it leaves his hand.
Its certainly moving.
Maybe he'll figure himself out.

Nice double play-but Howard scores.

And Ruiz singles to center to make it 3-2.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 02:47 PM

I dont know if Happ has settled down or he's extremely fortunate.

Carlos Bee lines a fat fast ball to left for a single.

Wright gets a fat one to hit, and drives it into the ground to short,--double play.

Carlos Dee impatiently pops out.

After 2 and a half- 3-2 Mets.

WOW-what a catch by Beltran to open the inning.

Yup.

Beltran really covers a ton of ground out there, and never looks harried.

Beltran tells Howard anything you can do I can do better.

KABOOM!

5-3 Mets.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2007 03:23 PM

Phinally -- Beltran goes KABOOM !!
I hate when we score a buncha runs in just the first few batters then don't score at all after that. This was starting to look like one of those.

And you know, for all the shit Beltran takes about balls that drop in front of him, he catches a whole bunch going back.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 03:29 PM

That Howard homer was cRuShEd.

How about Howard becoming the fastest player in MLB history to reach 100 HRs?
Amazing stuff.

Two players I love to hate and hate to love.
Howard and Utley.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2007 03:34 PM

He is the fastest in terms of games played, but not by a long shot in terms of youngest. That's because he didn't really get a full time job until he was 26. He'll turn 29 just after the season ends.

The guy who might be challenging some "youngest to" records is Prince Fielder. He may have 250 by the time he's Howard's age.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 03:41 PM

Soso may live to regret walking Bourne.

Prince absolutely cRuShEd one today at Wrigley.
Yea--hes something else.

Was surprized to read about him and his dad not on speaking terms.
Elder Fielder says he wont speak to him until he shows him some respect.

Johnny Dickshot

Nice job Soso.

Sosa down.

And it looks bad.

Johnny Dickshot

I think I might pinch-hit for him anyway.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2007 03:54 PM

Let's fire the hamstring coach.

martin
Jun 30 2007 03:54 PM

shit!

maine running for him? that is kinda weird.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 03:55 PM

Oh, and YEA--put Maine in to run--thats nice.

Lets lose two starters in one day 8-/

Schoeneweis warms up!

Why is Aaron Sele on this team?

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 03:58 PM

Maybe I should leave now so my jinx complex doesnt get any worse than it already is.

Cuz if the Mets lose this game-I will need a shrink.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 04:01 PM

I think when Omar drew it up, Show was the guy they wanted to face Howard while protecting a Met lead.

For the occasional blow-out game or when you need someone early in the game to go multiple innings. Not in the 6th of a 2-run game vs an LHB like Howard.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2007 04:06 PM

This Dobbs guy in at least a generation too young to have his teammates nickname him 'Trooper'

OlerudOwned
Jun 30 2007 04:07 PM

It's feasible to only pitch Schoeneweis during road games, right?

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2007 04:08 PM

Schoeneweis keeps that road ERA pristine.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 04:09 PM

Willie's ability to feas may surprise us.

I'd sure like to score a half-dozen runs this inning.

Kid Carsey

FK: >>>Let's fire the hamstring coach<<<

HOW could this happen on a team with this payroll. DON'T they properly
coach the pitchers NOT to bust it down the LINE???? PLUS, WHO THE
FART is stretching these players OUT??? I WANT HIM GONE TODAY!!!

(there will be someone on WFAN saying this tonight at 2.30 am while we
are sleeping)

Zvon

martin
Jun 30 2007 04:12 PM

that was almost the play i have been waiting my whole life to see, the catch by an outfielder who falls over the fence.

OlerudOwned
Jun 30 2007 04:12 PM

Well, you can't fault Rowand for not trying. I mean, holy crap.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 04:15 PM

Rowand is Teh Awesomeness.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 04:17 PM

It was a valiant effort.

But I have to say that Ive seen alot of Philly games on TV, and theres no doubt that Rowand has not been the same centerfielder he was before he made that fantastic catch/collision with the wall off Nady last year.

This drive off Beltran was right in the thick part of his glove, and there was a day he makes that catch.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 04:30 PM

Nice inning for Heilman.

Nymr83
Jun 30 2007 04:34 PM

Phillies are 6 losses from becoming the first sports franchise to ever lose 10,000 games. nice.

Gomez just got hit by a pitch and Jose Mesa is back on the mound for philly, wow i thought that guy was retired.

Kid Carsey
Jun 30 2007 04:36 PM

Gomez plunked, I love how FOX has a quick shot on que for both dugouts.
He needs to be thrown at another time or two, I like the way he just ran quickly
down to first. I dig this guy.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 04:37 PM

Mesa throws a heavy fastball too.
Thats gonna leave a mark.

And that Gomez kid just shrugs it off like its a bug bite. Hey--I like him.

Kid Carsey
Jun 30 2007 04:39 PM

Lost his green quick too.

Zvon
Jun 30 2007 04:50 PM

So thats 9 HRs for the Mets in the last 3 games?--Including 4 by Beltran?

Wowsers.
This is what I like to see.
Especially vs. the Phools.

Kid Carsey

A catch doesn't count, to my understanding, if your entire body leaves the playing area. You have to come back down in fair territory.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 09:04 PM

REally?

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2007 09:13 PM

I don't know. Maybe, as long as part of you is over the field at the point of the catch, you're good. I'll check.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 30 2007 09:18 PM

I'd guess that hopping the fence so as to "catch" a HR when it gets to you is bogus but that attempts, like Rowland's, that began as part of a pursuit in fair territory would be outs no matter where his whole body landed. I mean, that's an out if he holds onto that ball and flops into the bullpen. Should be at least.

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2007 09:21 PM

Well, I'm not finding anything to support my contention, so I'm withdrawing it with apologies.

I did learn that the call was wrong in that play in which Mike Cameron was ruled to have not made a putout when he dropped a ball after a catch during his transfer to his throwing hand.

Frayed Knot
Jul 01 2007 06:05 AM

If Rowland held on to that ball it's an out - and would be even if he tumbled into the pen afterward.
What's NOT a catch would be if he jumped the fence and was already in the pen [u:60a5ceabc3]before ever getting to the ball[/u:60a5ceabc3].

Edgy DC
Jul 01 2007 06:09 AM

As I McSaid, I withdraw the contention.

Gwreck
Jul 01 2007 10:40 PM

Thank you for the clarification -- I had a lengthy discussion with the guy sitting next to me on Sunday about whether it'd be an out or not.

Howard's home run was even more impessive in person I think. Deep into the second deck. Good thing it didn't really matter. We had him up each of the 3 times as the first batter of the inning.

Tons of Mets fans at this game, many were loud, fortunately not too many obnoxious ones.

Crab fries at Citizens Bank Park = highly recommended.
