He's got my vote...

Okay, with the All Star game looming on the horizon, let's see your ballot for each league.

I'll start it off. Here is my ballot:

1st - K. Youkilis - BOS (Write in vote)
2nd - B. Roberts - BAL
SS - C. Guillen - DET
3rd - A. Rodriguez - NYY
C - J. Posada - NYY (It seriously pains me to vote for 2 of George's evil minions)
OF - M. Ordonez - DET
OF - I. Suzuki - SEA
OF - V. Guerrero - LAA

National League
1st - P. Fielder - MIL
2nd - C. Utley - PHI

OF - M. Holliday - COL
OF - C. Lee - HOU
OF - E. Byrnes - ARZ

I thought you were kidding about Byrnes for a minute, but holy crap, he's having a great season. I haven't heard a peep about him this year.

I think voting based on numbers should also consider the second half of last year.

Disagree

Would I be wrong to infer that you mean to say that voting that is not based on numbers should not consider the second half of last year?

Well, voting that's not based on numbers should start by considering numbers.

we seem to have across the board agreement in the NL at C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, and on Holliday in the outfield (with near unanimity on Griffey, only 1 person didn't select him) But we've got no agreement on that 3rd outfielder- Byrnes, Soriano, Dunn, Rowand, Lee each got a vote (with Byrnes getting a 2nd one from the one guy against Griffey) anyone care to argue their guy?

the numbers through the end of play yesterday:

(Name, games/PA, BA/OBP/SLG, HR/RBI/R, SB/CS, OPS+)
Byrnes 78/342 .312/.363/.516 13/43/48 14/5 124
Dunn 75/310 .271/.361/.569 21/50/50 7/2 135
Lee 77/335 .291/.340/.510 14/62/42 4/4 121
Rowand 76/321 .313/.392/.482 10/39/47 4/1 129
Soriano 70/325 .309/.357/.558 15/30/51 10/3 135

I wanted to go specifically with a Left, Center, and Right fielder.
Not everyone did that and the voting process certainly doesn't require it, but I like to think of how I'd want a real All-Star OF to look and, while you can make an argument for each of them individually, a trio like Dunn, Carlos Lee, and Soriano would be one brutal OF.

I must have missed where on the ballot Granderson is listed but he does it all -- hits, runs, fields. So does Sizemore. Wanted also to write in Carlos Pena at first base but the internet gives me only one writein per ballot.

I threw Nady a vote in the NL outfield because its a pretty weak crop overall, Nady's having a good year, and I feel like we still owe him one. Go, X!

Oh, and Wright over Cabrera due to the fact that Cabrera appears to be a major dick.

First Base: Morneau, J., MIN
Second Base: Polanco, P., DET
Third Base: Rodriguez, A., NYY
Shortstop: Guillen, C., DET
Catcher: Martinez, V., CLE
Outfielder: Guerrero, V., LAA
Outfielder: Sizemore, G., CLE
Outfielder:
Write-in: Curtis Granderson

First Base: Fielder, P., MIL
Second Base: Utley, C., PHI
Third Base: Wright, D., NYM
Shortstop: Reyes, J., NYM
Catcher: Martin, R., LAD
Outfielder: Griffey Jr., K., CIN
Outfielder: Holliday, M., COL
Outfielder: Nady, X., PIT

Yeah, but I thought Wright was so neato that he's always a potential dick.

Really, there's something that makes me feel like it's 1978 all over again when I see names like "Curtis Granderson" and "Grady Sizemore" on ballots. Those names are so old school that I can smell the blacktop and hear the school bell.

A quick stab at the pitching staffs.
They're gonna take more relievers than what I'm showing, but I like rewarding the starters more.

AL:
Danny Haren - Oak
Johan Santana - Minn
John Lackey - LAA
Josh Beckett - Bost
Justin Verlander - Det
CC Sabathia - Clev
D. Matsuzaka - Bost
James Shields - TB

F. Rodriguez - LAA
JJ Putz - Sea
Jonathan Papelbon - Bos

NL:
Brad Penny - LAD
Chris Young - SD
Jake Peavy - SD
John Maine - Mets
John Smotlz - Atl
Derrick Lowe - LAD
Tim Hudson - Atl
Ben Sheets - Milw

Billy Wagner - Mets
Takashi Saito - LAD
Trevor Hoffman - SD

So, is Hoffman getting the Commissioner's Game-Stopping Award for Outstanding Performance in the Field of Excellence this year?

By all rights, it should go to Bonds, with the hometown flavor thing and all. But they may decide Bonds has forfeited his rights. If they stop the game to give it to some other schmoe, though, the story of the implied disrespect will overshadow that of the game itself.

That's what we've got to see. The All Star game is always about soap opera.

Hey, Hoffman's saved 22 of 24, with a 2.10 ERA and a 0.83 WHiP.
Including him is no charity case.

I certainly in no way meant to suggest as such.

I just meant to speculate on whether the award would continue and who will get it if does.

Moments of silence for Hancock and Beck?

Nymr83

they can give it to Hoffman over Bonds because he's set his record while Bonds isn't there (yet.) Has Hoffman said anything about this being his final season? "definite" retirement plans would help justify it too.

It didn't stop them from giving one to Clemens.

Hometowniness is also a key, with past winners including Clemens in Houston and Roberto Freaking Clemente in Pittsburgh.

It's like the best way to get an Oscar:
1) Do a movie
2) Announce that you're dying.

Unfortunately, it's a ploy that only works once.
