US Newspapers

Which newspaper intrigues you most, based only on the sound of it's name?
Cincinnati Enquirer (Plenty of legit papers are called "Enquirer," and yet it will always sound sleazy. Representing Jerry Springer's town doesn't help.) 1 votes
Cleveland Plain Dealer (Sounds like a roving gambler man.) 6 votes
Columbus Dispatch (George Steinbrenner used to designate players for a Columbus Dispatch if they made a baserunning gaffe against the Red Sox.) 0 votes
Dallas Morning News (Putting "Morning" in there just makes it so soft and sweet sounding. I bet they never get called on until last at press conferences.) 0 votes
Detroit Free Press (What a no-bullshit name. It says, "You're lucky to read this, you ungrateful shits.") 2 votes
Hartford Courant (It's French, and, so, sounds dirty.) 0 votes
Kansas City Star (I'm a Kansas City Star. That's what I are.) 0 votes
Memphis Commercial Appeal (What the fuck! Crappiest name ever?) 0 votes
Sacramento Bee (Cutest newspaper name.) 2 votes
Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette (Points for being unafraid to alliterate.) 0 votes
Rocky Mountain News (We cover mountains. If something happens to that mountain. The other mountains need to know about it.) 0 votes
San Jose Mercury News (We cover planets. If something happens to that planet. The other planets need to know about it.) 0 votes
Toronto Globe and Mail (Not a US newspaper, but how antclimactic is it to put "Mail" after "Globe"? I think this is the worst merger ever.) 0 votes
New Orleans Times-Picayune (Dandiest of the mid-majors.) 1 votes

Sometimes, when I roll into a new town, one of the best ways to celebrate is to grab a copy of their local gray lady, the legendary 150-year-old rag that dates back to when the town was just an outpost. They all have a mystery to them, dating back to the pre-mass-culture days when each town had it's own paper, it's own high-end department store, it's own drug store, and hits on the radio that weren't always hits anywhere else.

Yeah, maybe they're sucking 75% of their content off the UPI feed now, but that banner says St. Louis Post-Dispatch. I've been reading stories picked up from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as long as I can remember, and "Here," I say to myself, "I am at the source."

I voted Cleveland.

When I was in Texas last week, I was surprised to find how hard it was to get a copy of the Dallas Morning News (my preferred local paper) on the Fort Worth side of the "Metroplex." I had to settle for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram which I didn't like as much.

I'm also intrigued by The Tennessean, (sounds more like a person than a newspaper) The Deseret News, (Deseret? I thought I was in Salt Lake City!) and the Arizona Republic (like the Diamondbacks, they take the name of the state instead of the city; Phoenix sure gets dissed).

I also voted Cleveland (when I was younger, I thought it was Plains Dealer, as in, Cleveland, Ohio must be located out in the Plains somewhere). I also share your admiration for whatever uniqueness one finds in the local paper, which isn't nearly as much as it used to be in the post-USA Today, post-Internet era.

I have two extra nominees:

New Orleans Times-Picayune

and a personal favorite not only for the crazy name and logo but for my first job:

Yeah, I'm going to stay away from the delicious nomenclature of county and sub-city localities, but that's an impressive first paper. I've got to stick with the smaller majors and mid-majors here. Places with a Washington bureau, or at least a few out-of-town correspondents.

Can't believe I forgot the Pic. I'm adding it.

I voted Cleveland, too.

When I was a kid, I always read the Indians' news in "The Sporting News" written by Gordon Cobbledick.

When you see the byline "Gordon Cobbledick - Cleveland Plain Dealer", how can you not take notice?

And, speaking of newspaper mergers, anyone else remember the New York "World Journal Tribune"?
Mole?

The Des Moines Register

They get themselves a bit of national exposure every four years when the Iowa caucuses get near.
I also once registered with 'The Register' for a cross-state bike ride they run each summer.

Wasn't the Sacramento Bee where Tom Bradford worked?

Every paper I've every worked for has had a pretty boring name.

Amityville Record (summer internship)
Bridgeport Post and The Telegram (now the Connecticut Post)
Flint Journal
Grand Rapids Press

New Orleans Times-Picayune,that's just a great name for a paper, supposed to be an excellent publication ,did some great work in the aftermath of Katrina IIRC.
