Another thread mentions some out of town newspaper names. Years ago, each major league team had a weekly article in The Sporting News written by one of their local sportswriters.
Are there any old time sportswriters you used to read and wish were still around?
I always liked Leonard Koppett. He was the first sportswriter I remember who would occasionally bring social issues into his sports columns where appropriate. One column I remember was when he traced the decline in attendance of the St. Louis Hawks basketball team over a three year period. As the team record got better, and they went higher in the playoffs each succeeding year, their attendance substantially declined(by about 1 - 2,000 fans per game each year). His theory was that was because over that time span they had increased the number of Black starters in their lineup.
