A happy july 4th to everyone, enjoy your BBQs and don't get hurt with all those illegal fireworks we know you've been hoarding!

Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but the democrats believe every day is April 15.-Ronald Reagan

Celebrated my 4th the true American way...with Canadian indie rock!

Seriously, the New Pornographers put on a great show in Battery Park.

"Twin Cinema" is the best rock and/or roll tune to come out in the last 3 years, without a doubt. I don;t know why it wasn't the lead single and a billion seller.

Seems like yesterday that I celebrated independence day hosting the southernmost Crane Pool gathering ever.

Now I'm crying in my vitamin water watching Mota give up a Brady.

I celebrated by being in the vicinity of the Coney Island hot dog eating contest. Couldn't see anything but heard the results. Odd to see so many people caring about this thing, people passionate about who was going to win or lose. Girls screaming Beatle-fan-like "I love you, Joey Chestnut." Chants of USA, USA etc. Plus a large contingent there rooting hard for Kobayashi. Rode the Cyclone, had a beer or two, had a hot dog, went home.

Vactioning in Chicago this week. Chicago's official fireworks display was along the Lake Michigan waterfront on July 3rd. We took it in and had a great time, even if they were a day early in my view.

We celebrated yesterday by taking in a free John Mayer show in Grant Park during the Taste of Chicago Festival. Then we headed to Greektown for a fabulous meal.

Thanks everyone :-)

Marathon is right - I was in Weehawken for this. There is a spot where JFK Boulevard has this breath-taking view of the city - the road is literally a scenic overlook.

I think I'm going to try to shoot the fireworks from along the East River next year.

Notice how our new font selections include serifs on the capital I, so now it's clear that his name is Iubitul, and not lubitul.

I think that's pretty much the main reason we moved, isn't it?

So how the hell do we pronounce that name now.....

Hey, while you were away we found out what your name means... Lover Boy!

In many of the great languages of Eastern Europe, I is used as a consonant where we would use a J (i.e "Johanna" would be "Ioana"), but it's pronounced more like a Y.

What's that old quote by Satchel Paige? I can't seem to remember it.....

Iubitul is a Romanian word, and it's pronounced You-Bit-ool

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 06 2007 07:59 AM

Yes, we found out that it was Romanian, and Edgy asked a female Romanian co-worker what the word meant, and she blushed and said "Lover boy."

Saying that Iubitul means "lover boy" is a bit simplistic. It's usually part of saying "Iubitul meu". The direct english translation would be "my love/my lover/my darling", and the meaning would depend on the person who told you that.

Iubitul is the masculine version of the word "iubit". The feminine version of the word is Iubita, and the phrase would be "Iubita mea"

We went to the baseball game in Williamsport tonight, fireworks afterward.

On the drive home we saw fireworks in three more towns, South Williamsport, Jersey Shore, and Lock Haven. Awesome

So there's a town called 'Jersey Shore' which is nowhere near
Jersey and nowhere near the shore?

Jul 07 2007 08:35 PM

That's exactly right and don't ask me why, though I think it has something to do with cows along the river in the olden days.

Ah, so it's for Jersey cows by the shore of a river then.

Jul 07 2007 08:39 PM

heheh, that's what I've heard. Though I don't know why they called the river bank a shore.
