I'm out the road again for the next 2 weeks promoting the upcoming album by the new band I'm in. Those familiar with Hum Machine will recognize some of the sounds because it's the same members with a new singer/guitarist out front. We're putting out a vinyl-only album in August that we've been recording for the past several months. I'm playing a chopped Hammond M3 for this band and we'll be hitting 18 cities:

7/5-High Noon Saloon-Madison, WI
7/6-Big V's-Minneapolis, MN
7/7-Java Joe's-Des Moines, IA
7/8-Red Line Tap-Chicago, IL
7/9-White's Bar-Saginaw, MI
7/10-The Old Miami-Detroit ,MI
7/11-The Nite Owl-Dayton, OH
7/12-Mia's-Lexington, KY
7/13-Acappella-Richmond, VA
7/14-Sadlacks-Raleigh, NC
7/15-The Cave-Chapel Hill, NC
7/16-Reservoir Bar-Carrboro, NC
7/17-The Lit Lounge-New York, NY
7/18-The Niagara-New York, NY
7/19-Doc Watson's-Philadelphia, PA
7/20-The Empty Glass-Charleston, WV
7/21-Legend's-Fort Wayne, IN
7/22-The Red Dock-Sagatuck, MI

If any one's around any of these clubs on these dates, stop by...I'll be the one shredding the keys in the band from Wisconsin.

In other news, my name was mentioned in the August issue of Jazz Times in a review for another album I contributed to. This was a total departure from the normal rock stuff that I do, but the drummer that runs our record label had a vision for an avant-garde jazz fusion thing that I did some guitar, piano and vocal work on. Eventually he got some pretty heavy hitting jazz players to appear as well. This album was vinyl only as well, but is currently available through Itunes and emusic. You can preview it here.

I see what's going on here. To hell with Washington, is that it?

Hey, all of New England is passed over as well. At least Richmond and Philly are close enough to you for a day trip.

Well, Boston isn't much of a college town.

Does Shazy Hade have amps that go to 11?

We had originally planned on DC for the 17th, but a) we didn't find any clubs that would let us play and b) we set up a showcase for our distribution company in North Carolina on that date, so DC got skipped this time.

Boston is a great music town and we love playing there. If we were out for a longer period of time we would certainly head up there. As it turns out, heading back toward the midwest after NYC was just easier scheduling-wise.

We're skipping Cleveland because we are afraid we'll get lost on the way to the stage.

Monk, your set list says you do original plus one or two covers, who do you typically cover?

TransMonk

For this tour:

Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh
Punk Rocker - Iggy Pop & Teddybears
Money Changes Everything - Cyndi Lauper
Shakin' All Over - (many, many artists have covered this, and at this moment I can't even recall who did the original...it's on Live at Leeds by The Who)
Down By the River - Neil Young
Working Class Hero - John Lennon

We'll do one or two of these a night, depending on how long we play and what kind of crowd is there.

I will have to check my schedule when I get back to NC, but I may be able to head over for the Raleigh show on 7/14.

In 1980, Steve Lillywhite was producing an Atlanta band called The Brains and a Dublin band called U2. One of those bands made it.

"Money Changes Everything" was written by The Brains frontman Tom Gray and was the closest thing they had to a hit. Fortunately for them, Lauper's cover send them some reveunue. Now they get Transmonk residuals.

When you say you are putting out a vinyl-only album do you mean like an old vinyl record, not a CD...where would people play the vinyl record?

CD's are becoming a dead medium for working musicians. Everyone and their cousin can burn their band's new song on a CD and send it anywhere they want. They are cheap and easy to make even without much talent or ambition. Booking agents, club promoters, press and record stores are all flooded with CDs...they are the new "demo tape".

We decided to be different and send out a full size vinyl album with screen printed covers. That way when someone in the industry receives it in the mail, it stands out and doesn't just get thrown in a pile with the rest of the CDs.

Turntables are pretty cheap at discount stores and garage sales. But...if you are totally attached to the digital audio medium, we do give you options:
1. Although the album is available for sale in a vinyl only format, if you buy the vinyl, a CD insert is included. So you can enjoy the full size artwork and the fact that you own a genuine record album that was made after 1985, but you can also play the music in your CD player and your car.

2. The vinyl is limited edition (400 printed), so it will be available for digital download through Itunes, emusic and rhapsody. The theory is, the album will sell out, but the music is forever available online...then the vinyl gets sold on Ebay in 20 years for dozens of dollars.

Brilliant idea Transmonk,I'd like to purchase your new vinyl record, except I don't see a link on your site.

The album's official release date won't be until August, so it's not for sale online quite yet. When it does come out, I'll bump this thread up to let you now where you can link to order it.

Edgy, you may now pull your tongue firmly out of your cheek.
Of course,, you may have forgotten to include the seven colleges that call nearby Worcester (that's pronounced "woostah") Mass. home.

Ian Faith: The Boston gig has been cancelled... David St. Hubbins: What? Ian Faith: Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town.
