IGT All-Star Game 7/10/07

Nymr83
Jul 10 2007 05:11 PM

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Ichiro Suzuki, cf
Derek Jeter, ss
David Ortiz, 1b
Alex Rodriguez, 3b
Vladimir Guerrero, rf
Magglio Ordonez, lf
Ivan Rodriguez, c
Placido Polanco, 2b
Dan Haren, p

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Jose Reyes, ss
Barry Bonds, lf
Carlos Beltran, cf
Ken Griffey Jr., rf
David Wright, 3b
Prince Fielder, 1b
Russell Martin, c
Chase Utley, 2b
Jake Peavy, p

The AL lineup is exactly what i'd have done as manager. if i were LaRussa I'd have hit Beltran 2nd, Griffey 3rd, and Bonds 4th and Utley ahead of Martin.

seawolf17
Jul 10 2007 05:33 PM

I like Bonds second, because it forces Haren to throw him big, fat meaty fastballs with Jose Reyes dancing off first base.

Kid Carsey
Jul 10 2007 06:09 PM

Beltran will be the All-Star MVP (or corporate potg) and it will catipult him
into an insane second half starting off with a huge welcome home on Thurs
when he goes 4-5 and goes all Alfon(Z)o on the Reds.

Hey, it's an off day ... I wanted to type something to keep up The Rogers.

They found a way to ruin a sit down with Willie Mays....

Jul 10 2007 06:12 PM

The swing for a million is total humiliation.

metsguyinmichigan
Jul 10 2007 06:28 PM

Pinstripes!

I can't remember the last time the Mets wore the pinstripes in the All-Star game!

Sweet!

seawolf17
Jul 10 2007 06:29 PM

"Chase Utley? Why would I do that?"

I love the blue hat/pinstripes combo. Whoever made that decision gets a raise.

Fox probably wanted just Jeter and Mays, and Mays, a former Met, no doubt refused, so they brought in Junior to balance out the evil.

Dammit, you're telling me nobody had the chance to teach Chris Isaak the words to the national anthem before they sent him out there?

metsguyinmichigan

mays to Reyes!

Kid Carsey
Jul 10 2007 06:43 PM

The whole thing with Mays was nice, I'm such a mush mush for that stuff.

seawolf17
Jul 10 2007 06:49 PM

Me: "I wonder how they chose Reyes to catch the first pitch."
Ms Wolf: "He won the raffle."

Kid Carsey
Jul 10 2007 06:53 PM

For some reason I think Mays is a Reyes fan of sorts and branded him some
time ago as a can't miss superstar in some interview.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 10 2007 06:55 PM

Reyes needed that image booster. I'm sure David Wright recommended he do it.

that was fucking disgraceful. not knowing the words to the national anthem and agreeing to sing it infront of a national audience anyway should be a crime.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee grounds into the DP. Suck it, Jeter.

That was more fun for Jose than catching the ball from Mays -- except jeter wouldn't autograph that ball for him.

I think Tim McCarver actually shed a tear when Jeet GIDPed there. You could hear his voice crack, like his hero was just discovered in bed with a stripper.

Nymr83

Ortiz hits into the shift.... and Utley throws one about 6 inches off the ground that Fielder can't handle.

We went over this before, but the Dodgers gave up 31 to coach John Shelby almost as soon as Piazza left. Penny took it over in 95.

The last Dodger to be 31 before Piazza was Roger McDowell.

YES! Somewherelse I read based on our future game rep that it looked like black/blue hat with black tops. THANKFULLY the proper pinstriped/blue hat attire is being worn. I'm guessing it has been a while since a Met has graced the ASG with pinstripes

SteveJRogers

Here is the truely funny part, and probably tells you all you need to know about how the ASG is treated, FOX ALMOST missed that because they have Eric Byrnes out there in McCovey Cove with his dog swimming the wrong way and his boat springing a leak.

SteveJRogers
Jul 10 2007 08:21 PM

Besides the point mm. But actually if they tried to ever use that call in any sort of highlight package of ASG moments, they actually would have to edit out that non-sequitor as Byrnes was saying that JUST as Young delivered the pitch pretty much. Or at the very least it was where usually you'd hear the start of the highlight "Here is the pitch..."

Heck, FOX showed some restraint. Usually you'd have the cast of "The Bernie Mac Show" out there sharing a kayak before moving into seats in the front row, where they would be pointed out by Buck - but it's not an ad.

Then they'd be shooed out for the cast of "House."

Totally enjoyed the game :)

Reyes, Wright and Beltran all did something to contribute.
Reyes's excellent lead off batting, Wrights glove, Beltraan with the Triboom(c)

If we (the national league) won, Reyes would have been MVP.

....and so it goes.

bmfc1
Jul 11 2007 03:35 AM

Pujols is mad at LaRussa for not playing him. Rob Neyer has a good blog entry today blasting LaRussa for this decision. I didn't think it was possible to dislike LaRussa more, yet I do!

(G-Faif's POTG entry is outstanding.)

That's how I thought of it too. Willie hit his cutoff man perfectly.

As argued eloquently in the latest edition of "Faith & Fear", it was a passing of the torch from one NY great to another. A brilliant, moving moment.

But given that this is MLB, it also could have been a coincidence because Reyes was batting first.

]"I don't know; somebody go ask him," said Pujols when asked why he wasn't used. "Maybe he wanted to play the other guys. Maybe he didn't want to leave other guys out. Maybe if he would have played me and left other guys out, maybe they would have said, 'Why did he play Albert and not the other guy?'"

Even though we lost I thoroughly enjoyed this game.

bmfc1
Jul 11 2007 08:09 AM

The upside to the NL's loss is the almost universal slamming of LaRussa. At Deadspin, Cardinals fan Will Leitch rips him. On FAN, Russo said "only Tony LaRussa can screw up an all-star game" and it was a "Christmas present" from LaRussa to Leyland. And even the dopey Cardinals fans are ripping him: at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch message board, a majority of the posters think he screwed up. Nice to see LaRussa exposed.

metirish
Jul 11 2007 08:16 AM

I'll give LaRussa credit for leaving Reyes in longer than any player, giving every chance at an MVP if things had worked differently, still not hitting Pujols was criminal.
