IGT - 7/17/07 - NY Mets @ San Diego Padres - 10PM est.

I haven't started an IGT in years.....so here goes.

Goatay back playing 2nd base and hitting second?

Hernandez in three games started against the Padres had two wins and no losses.

Peavy has started seven against the Mets with three wins and one loss.

I think it's somewhat telling that when Gotay plays he bats second, but when Valentin got the start last night he batted eighth.

I think we really could've used us some Easley last night.

And Lo Duca getting the only RBI last night does not change that he doesn't belong in the six hole. Does. Not. Belong.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 02:27 PM

Well, last nite was a fluke in that we faced a lefty without Easley in the park. I think WWSB trusts Valentin more than the Goat vs LHP -- but had Gotay played, he wouldnta been 2nd either, don't think

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 08:13 PM

What the hell is Brian Giles making a great catch for?

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 08:15 PM

Gameday sez: "Carlos Beltran doubles (19) on a ground ball to second baseman Marcus Giles."

How does that happen?

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 08:24 PM

It was a hard bouncer that hit the first base bag and went over Gonzalez' head into right. Not to 2B at all.

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 08:28 PM

Did he pick it up out there?

Meanwhile, Rickey is wearing an elbow protector coaching first.

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 08:36 PM

That play on Duque? That's when you slide into first.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 08:37 PM

Yes, he may have.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 08:37 PM

Valentin, step into my office.

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 08:54 PM

Shawn Green, West Coast dude. Do it now.

Johnny Dickshot

LoDuca hitting 7th = Willie Genius ++++++

Mr. RBI.

LoDuca's an RBI machine.

Got a run and made Peavy throw a double-inning (30 pitches) that inning.

Tight spot, here.

Tight.

I swear he destroyed us with a HR once.

Nice job, Dookie

el duque steals another base!

Frayed Knot
Jul 17 2007 09:24 PM

That might have been an interesting play without the bobble

DocTee
Jul 17 2007 09:24 PM

I'm following this one on GameDay. A question: for each pitch, they give Speed, Break, and PFX...I never noticed any of this data earlier, and have no idea what the last one is. A little help?

Nymr83
Jul 17 2007 09:25 PM

Valentin drives him in (well, i guess he gets the RBI there) and now advances to 2nd on a wild pitch. come on Beltran, lets not waste opportunities!

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 17 2007 09:25 PM

On that play my brain said:

Out by 5 feet.............61%
Out and injured..........38%
Centerfielder bobbles...1%

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 09:28 PM

This is one of the two top pitchers in the league that we're up 3-0 on.

(We face the other next series.)

Rockin' Doc
Jul 17 2007 09:29 PM

Beltran comes through. Let's pile on while we him down.

Come on Wright. We need a hit.

Rockin' Doc
Jul 17 2007 09:30 PM

I haven't been able to figure out what Pfx stands for either, DocTee.

Gwreck
Jul 17 2007 09:33 PM

LoDuca, Valentin, Beltran -- yes, you all really did need those RBIs. Shawn Green, your turn next.

Edgy DC

You don't care for me

How about that base-stealin' Valentin?

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 10:13 PM

Make 'em pay, Last-stings.

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 10:15 PM

David Wright shows some intangibles with the hook slide.

Ruben pinch-hitting robs Hernandez of the complete game.

Frayed Knot
Jul 17 2007 10:16 PM

I kinda liked the bunt by Green in that inning.
Kept 'em out of the GiDP and was good for a tack-on run.

Edgy DC
Jul 17 2007 10:52 PM

I kinda liked taking the dog out with a 4-0 lead and coming home with a 7-0 lead. Duque gets the win. Lotsa beer drinkers, but, once again, looks like the pitcher gets first shot at the pitcher.

I'm getting old as I lasted until the 3rd inning only.

Plus Atlanta lost, which puts the Mets in a good position to hold onto first place until the end of this western swing.

I took some satisfaction in the beating up of Royce Ring, and would very much like to smack Heath Bell around tonight.

He can't talk that way about our organization! Only WE can talk shit about our organization!!!

It was a pleasant surprise to wake up this morning and find out that the Mets had defeated Jake Peavey.

Before I got the game results, I was thinking about how during the 2006 season I often had that 1986 feeling, that the Mets could beat any pitcher and any opponent. But the way this season's been going, I went to bed last night expecting to learn of a Mets loss in the morning.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 18 2007 01:30 PM

CF said it -- really their best-looking game in weeks and weeks. Not that we have the luxury of being satisfied with 1-game winning streaks, it was a nice, solid, handsome, virile, crispy win.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 18 2007 01:34 PM

Hopefully it's one to build on. Tonight we have young John Maine against ancient Greg Maddux. Braves and Reds are tied in the ninth in Atlanta this afternoon. If the Mets can hold or expand their lead over the course of this California trip, it'll be a very good thing.

Apparently, in Gameday, pfx is the horizontal break, while "break" is the vertical break. They are also sometimes distinguished as pfx_x and pfx_z.

Elster88

I woulda thought x and y

Edgy DC
Jul 19 2007 10:56 PM

Yeah. My guess is that the plane is perpendicular to the front of the plate, and that the Y axis is the one coming at you.

Somebody make Wright feel better.

Rockin' Doc
Jul 19 2007 11:04 PM

I found the following explaination of break and pFx on the MLB site:

Q: Why is the Pitch-f/x data only shown for some games but not others?

A: The Pitch-f/x technology is currently up and running in eight ballparks -- Atlanta, Chicago (White Sox), Los Angeles (Angels and Dodgers), San Diego, Seattle, Texas and Toronto -- so this new data is currently only available for games played in those ballparks. However, the system will be operational in all 30 ballparks by the end of the season, so expect to see the Pitch-f/x data for more and more games as the season progresses.

Q: What is the PFX value?

A: The "Pitch-f/x" value is currently defined as the measurement of the distance between the location of the actual pitch thrown over the plate, and the calculated location of a ball thrown by the pitcher in the same way, with no spin; this is the value we provided in Enhanced Gameday last season as "Break". The new Break value, which we feel is more appropriate for the common understanding of the term, is defined as the measurement of the greatest distance between the trajectory of the pitch at any point between the release point and the front of home plate, and the straight line path from the release point and the front of home plate. By this definition, a Barry Zito curveball will have a much greater Break value than a Brad Penny fastball.

Thanks guys. That MLB explanation is impenetrable-- I like Edgy's better
