KTE - San Diego Padres

A little busy at work so a "Just the Facts Ma'am" KTE is all I can serve up today.

The Pads come into action tonight one game behind LA in the NL West with a record of 50-40, and would qualify for the Wild Card if the season ended today. In a nutshell, the Padres can pitch. Their 3.13 team ERA is by far the best in the NL (Dodgers are a distant second at 3.77). Not all of their success can be attributed to Petco either (3.46 ERA on the road). While their starters have been good (3.45 ERA), their bullpen has been even better (2.55 ERA). So if you’re going to get them, get them early, because that pen gets even stingier when it’s close and late (2.44 ERA). The pen is led, of course, by Trevor Hoffman, but it’s also had strong performances from almost-Met Scott Linebrink, former-Met Heath Bell, and Justin Germano who has never had anything to do with the Mets.

In this series, we’ll be seeing some old friends. Veteran David Wells (4-5, 4.31) gets the start tonight. On Tuesday, the Mets will see All-Star Jake Peavy (9-3, 2.19), and on Wednesday, it’s our old nemesis Greg Maddux (7-7, 4.35). The Mets will fortunately miss Chris Young and his microscopic 1.97 ERA.

The good news is that the team doesn’t hit all that much. They rank 12th in runs scored, 13th in OPS, second to last in OBP and dead last in BA. In attempt to jumpstart their offense they just picked up Milton Bradley from the A’s. We’ll see the Giles brothers in San Diego. Brian is doing ok, with a .292 average. Marcus is struggling with a .242 average and I think he is splitting time with Geoff Blum. Neither is hitting for any power as they have combined for just 6 HR’s. Mike Cameron hits cleanup for them with 11 HR’s and a team high .262 BA. The only other threats in the lineup are first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (.261, 14 HR’s, 52 RBI) and shortstop Khalil Green (.240, 16 HR, 52 RBI).

X-Factor: Mike Cameron, Heath Bell, Royce Ring.

Feel free to supplement as you guys see fit.

This week is a big test for the Mets. We have the best of the West in San Diego and Los Angeles, while the Braves have two flaccid teams from the Central, in Cincinnati and St. Louis. If they can get one game on us each sereis, our first-place status is lost.

Lost!

The Padres are one of three long-time Mets opponents against whom the Mets have a .500 record or better.

The other two are the Cubs (332 and 332; the Mets just reached .500 this year) and the Expos (299 and 298; the last game the two teams played was the rubber game of a 597-game series.)

The Mets are 205 and 205 against San Diego since 1969. Over the last two years the Mets are 9-4 against the Padres, so until last year they had had a losing record.

You'd think that the Mets would have a better all-time record against the Padres than they do, but they don't.

Winning the series that starts tonight will allow the Mets to keep "bragging rights" at least until San Diego's next visit to Shea and, more importantly, can put the Mets in a better position to win the Wild Card if they fail to hold the division lead. San Diego is the current Wild Card leader, and their record (50-40) is only a half game less than that of the Mets. (51-40)

* Germano actually started and shut out the Dbaggs last nite. He was released by the Phillies this spring.

* Heath Bell had his worst appearance of the year Saturday (0.1 IP, 5 H, 3 RS) tho threw 0.2 scoreless last night; Ring in his last outing was shit too.

* Tuesday's start will be the first appearance since the All-Star Game for Peavy who was thrown to back of the line with "bicep soreness."

* Khaleil Green has already xceeded his personal-best in HRs. His OBP is .277 however, and he still looks like a girl.

* Maddux has lost 3 straight decisions, allowing 15 ER in 15.33 IP.

* Wells is facing a suspension for crying to the umpires in his last start, as if it were they and not him who surrendered a 2-run homer to Jeff F. Francouer. Fat alcoholic fuck.

Anybody got video of tha hissy fit?

Don't forget that Wells called out Bob Watson and MLB on their manhood after they suspended him.:

"Pretty soon we'll all put skirts on and we're all going to play softball."

David Wells, ladies and gentlemen.

A team that can pitch but doesn't hit very well? I got this sense of Deja Vu.

Should be a good series for those who like pitching duels (me!),

Fixed (thanks Rockin' Doc!)

Um, Willets, I think you meant to say that the Padres can pitch. The Mets are lucky to only draw one of the Padres 2 All Star starting pitchers in this series. Not often that fans would consider their team lucky Greg Maddox in a series. Times change.

The Rangers finally bring up a pitcher capable of having a good season pitching half his games in that park, and the first thing they do that offseason is trade him. For the record, I'd take Victor Zambrano (at least when marginally healthy) over Adam Eaton.

The Mets have 3 Ex-Padres. If you know them without looking it up, I'd be impressed.

1) Sandy Alomar, Jr. started his career as a San Diego Padre.

2) David Newhan was a Padre I believe, but I'm not positive on this one.

3) I really don't have a clue.

metirish, Royce Ring is the other former Met, now with the Padres.

Now, if you could help me out with who is the third former Padre now wearing a Mets uniform, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ollie Perez of course.

Not sure Newhan is right?

(edit -- looked it up, IS right). Wow.

One of the miracles of the San Diego bullpen is righthander Kenny Cameron. (They're all righthanders except Royce Ring.) Cameron was claimed off waivers and has given up only one run in 29.1 innings pitched.

Uni-Watch Note: Kenny and Mike refuse to distinguish themselves by wearing initial initals on their backs.

If spectators can't tell them two apart, something's wrong
