1. Who are the Phillies commemorating with their black patch? I don't remember any Phillies dying recently.

2. Does the honor of managing the All-Star team belong to the manager or the team? In other words, suppose LaRussa left the Cards after last year and decided to manage another NL team, would he get to go? Or would it be the Cards new manager? What if LaRussa retired? Would it be his replacement, or Willie as the manager of the NL Runners up?

3. Maggie Gyllenhaal. Hot or Not?

seawolf17
Jul 11 2007 01:03 PM

1. Don't know.

2. According to Wikipedia:
The manager for each league's team has for many years been the manager of the previous year's league champion. This honor is given to the manager, not the team, so it's possible that the All-Star manager could no longer be with the team with which he won, as happened in 2003, when Dusty Baker managed the National League team despite having moved from the National League champion San Francisco Giants to the Chicago Cubs. This has even included situations where the person is no longer actively managing a team: in 1979, Bob Lemon managed the American League team after having been fired by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. The coaching staff is selected by the manager.

3. Not.

Edgy DC
Jul 11 2007 01:04 PM

The honor belongs to the manager. Bob Lemon, and he's not the only one, came back to manage the AL team after he had been canned coming off of a pennant winning season for the Yankees. He even put the Yankee uniform back on, which I question.

I also question Frank Torre wearing a Yankee uniform in the All Star dugout.

I also seem to remember Danny Murtaugh coming out of retirement to manage the NL All-Star team in 1972. (He won the World Series with the Pirates in 1971.)

Who managed the All-Star teams in 1965? Both pennant-winning teams in 1964 ended up with new managers in 1965.

As for Maggie, she's definitely cute, but I wouldn't call her "hot."

Gene Mauch and Al Lopez.

Good question, Yancy. Apparently the policy wasn't in place yet, because Al Lopez and Gene Mauch managed the 1965 All Star Game.

Which is a heckuva reward for guiding a team to the most legendary failure of a stretch run in history.

I've never seen a girl vary so much depending on angle. She can look great or bad from scene to scene, even within the same movie. Love her personality though....enough to carry her to Top 5 status for me.

i think monday was the worst, being further away from the next met game than we are now.

how did Vukovich get 597 career at-bats and a 13-year career with those numbers? he had a career OPS of .425, i wonder if thats the lowest ever for someone over 500 career ABs?

He did manage to get traded straight-up for Dave Schneck (a couple of years after Schneck had played his last major league game).

Interesting change, which brings up a couple of trivia questions:

1. What manager (or managers -- there may be more than one) managed an all-star team without ever managing in the post season?

2. What manager managed four all-star games, but only was in the postseason twice?

(The change of rules now makes this much more unlikely, though not impossible.)

3. (easy one) What all-star game didn't have either of the previous year's winning managers managing?

#2 I'm going with Al Lopez who managed proper in 55 and 59 and was a replacement for Houk in 64 and Berra in 65

#3 also includes 65 with Lopez and Mauch as well as the very first All Star game in 1933 with Connie Mack and John McGraw as the skippers

Not who I was thinking of. And, double checking, this manager managed two all-star games, but never managed in the postseason.

And you're right about Lopez.

1) I know Felipe Alou managed the NL squad in 1995 because the Expos had the best record at the time of the strike (Take THAT Bobby Cox and your 14 "consecutive" titles.

2) I think the aforementioned Maggie is pretty, but then again I think Rachael Ray is a knockout, which gets me heavily mocked.

3) Reese Witherspoon's chin is so pointy that it's a distraction.

4) Drew seems to change from movie to movie. I think she looked great in "Music and Lyrics" and especially "Fever Pitch."

Oh man! That's just so wrong!

Now, Derek Jeter with a meat cleaver accident? OK.

Clemens? Even better!

Chipper Jones? It's just the right thing to do.

They apparently do not have Dunkin' Donuts in Michigan. Here in Massachusetts where DuDo's is on every corner there is a picture of Rachael Ray in each window with the words "Quick and Delish" underneath. I'm assuming those are her words.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 12 2007 12:30 PM

I was all set to call Nabisco and demand that they remove Rachael Ray's picture from their boxes of Ritz Crackers (she could actually be seen on four of the six side of the carton) but somebody apparently beat me to it.

After we returned from Alaska last summer, I noticed a "Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels" in my TiVo Alaska wish list. Since we had just returned from Anchorage, I figured we'd watch the show and see her take on the city.

What a mistake. It was 30 minutes of pure stupidity. She went to the Alaska Native Heritage Center and concluded her visit by saying, "If you're interested in Native Alaskan Heritage, then the Alaska Native Heritage Center is the place for you!"

How inane can you get?

Jul 12 2007 12:36 PM

I like Rachael Ray...but I have seen only about 4 episodes of her show. I guess she could get annoying with overexposure but I wouldn't know.

What I do like about her is that she grew up in upstate New York, and if you've spent any time up there, (soupy, Methead) you can recognize that upstate style of speaking. It was weird to see that on TV.

One of the episodes I caught was when she went back home and I noticed that her accent got thicker when she was back in her hometown. This happens to me too. I've been living in the city for ten years, but every time I go home, I feel like a hick again.
