1. Who are the Phillies commemorating with their black patch? I don't remember any Phillies dying recently.

1. Don't know.

The honor belongs to the manager. Bob Lemon, and he's not the only one, came back to manage the AL team after he had been canned coming off of a pennant winning season for the Yankees. He even put the Yankee uniform back on, which I question.

I also seem to remember Danny Murtaugh coming out of retirement to manage the NL All-Star team in 1972. (He won the World Series with the Pirates in 1971.)

What if the reigning manager declines for whatever reason? Who does the honor fall to?
|
Willets Point Jul 11 2007 01:18 PM |
|
Gene Mauch and Al Lopez.
|
Edgy DC Jul 11 2007 01:18 PM |
Good question, Yancy. Apparently the policy wasn't in place yet, because Al Lopez and Gene Mauch managed the 1965 All Star Game.

i think monday was the worst, being further away from the next met game than we are now. how did Vukovich get 597 career at-bats and a 13-year career with those numbers? he had a career OPS of .425, i wonder if thats the lowest ever for someone over 500 career ABs?
|
sharpie Jul 11 2007 01:59 PM |
He did manage to get traded straight-up for Dave Schneck (a couple of years after Schneck had played his last major league game).

Why the hell did I think he was a former great of the game....would never have checked his numbers until you mentioned them above....

Interesting change, which brings up a couple of trivia questions: 1. What manager (or managers -- there may be more than one) managed an all-star team without ever managing in the post season? 2. What manager managed four all-star games, but only was in the postseason twice? (The change of rules now makes this much more unlikely, though not impossible.) 3. (easy one) What all-star game didn't have either of the previous year's winning managers managing?

That reminds me...does anybody else think that Reese Witherspoon's chin is really pointy? I never noticed until about a year ago.

Benjamin Grimm Jul 11 2007 02:19 PM |
Have you ever seen Drew Barrymore's chin in profile?

Drew is adorable, but you don't want to get conked by that chin.

David Letterman saw several of Drew's body parts in profile ... I'm just not sure that the chin was among them.

Alou and Showalter both managed the all-star game before managing in the postseason, but they both got there years later.

#2 I'm going with Al Lopez who managed proper in 55 and 59 and was a replacement for Houk in 64 and Berra in 65 #3 also includes 65 with Lopez and Mauch as well as the very first All Star game in 1933 with Connie Mack and John McGraw as the skippers

Not who I was thinking of. And, double checking, this manager managed two all-star games, but never managed in the postseason. And you're right about Lopez.

I've seen Maggie up close. Not hot, not cute. Without the chest, she looks like a frompy 14 year old boy.

If I'd only seen photos of Rachael Ray, I'd probably think she was attractive.

Vic Sage Jul 12 2007 12:05 PM |
i'd like to read a story in the Post one day that Rachel Ray had her head split open with a meat cleaver in a horrible kitchen accident. That would be "delish".
|
metsguyinmichigan Jul 12 2007 12:10 PM |
|
Oh man! That's just so wrong! Now, Derek Jeter with a meat cleaver accident? OK. Clemens? Even better! Chipper Jones? It's just the right thing to do. (And Rachael would say "Yum-o," not "delish.")

Willets Point Jul 12 2007 12:29 PM |

They apparently do not have Dunkin' Donuts in Michigan. Here in Massachusetts where DuDo's is on every corner there is a picture of Rachael Ray in each window with the words "Quick and Delish" underneath. I'm assuming those are her words.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jul 12 2007 12:30 PM |
I was all set to call Nabisco and demand that they remove Rachael Ray's picture from their boxes of Ritz Crackers (she could actually be seen on four of the six side of the carton) but somebody apparently beat me to it.
|
Willets Point Jul 12 2007 12:34 PM |
By the way, I suspect somewhere on the internet Soupcan has put together a database of female actresses and movies they appeared naked in.

Centerfield Jul 12 2007 12:36 PM |
I like Rachael Ray...but I have seen only about 4 episodes of her show. I guess she could get annoying with overexposure but I wouldn't know.

Is she naked on the Ritz cracker box?

I'm not saying she's not annoying, I'm just agreeing that she's cute.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jul 12 2007 01:32 PM |
|
I agree with that too. But I find that she's far more annoying than she is cute. I'm glad she's off the Ritz Cracker boxes. I shudder to think that some day she may be on my boxes of Pop-Tarts!
