Trade Deadline...

A's send Jason Kendall to Cubs for minor league pitcher Jerry Blevins and backup backstop Rob Bowen, thus paving the way for Mike Piazza to resume some catching duties when he returns from DL.

Maybe this should become the official Trade and Trade Rumor thread up until the deadline.
What rumors are you folks hearing? Are they from fairly reputable sources?

Rumor: the Mets can totally get Oswalt if they'd just offer up Heilman and a bag of balls.
Source: WFAN caller

I wouldn't make that deal,Heilman has pitched good this week.

Plus it's a trick. That bag of balls is actually Wright's scrotum.

I don't know whether or not you'd call Mike Celizic "fairly reputable." I've never heard of him before. But I did spot this paragraph in an article on MSNBC.com about how we should expect a dull trading deadline this year:

="Mike Celizic"]The Mets are said to be doing everything they can to pry Roy Oswalt from the Astros, but while Houston may know it has no chance this year, it still doesn’t want to ship one of the premier starters in the game out of town.

Mike Celizic is a frequent contributor to MSNBC.com and a free-lance writer based in New York.

While getting Roy Oswalt would certainly be nice (especially given the ages of Glavine, Hernandez, and Pedro) I think their more immediate need is a bat and not an arm.

Houston would probably start with Milledge and end with Maine with players they would want, and some others in between.

TheOldMole
Jul 18 2007 03:01 AM

If it was alphabetical, they'd start with Maine and end with Milledge, and they'd also have to throw in Pedro and Fernando Martinez.

Cubs remain active, send SS Cesar Izturis to Pittsburgh, paving the way for Jack Wilson's departure from the steel city.

Phils beat Mets to the punch, land ChiSox 2B Tad Iguchi

Rockin' Doc
Jul 27 2007 05:18 PM

The Phillies didn't waste any time getting a fill in for the injured Chase Utley. The Phils got Iguchi for 21 year old right handed pitcher, Michael Dubee who is 4-4 with one save in 50 appearances for the Phillies Sally League (A) affiliate.

I would have expected Iguchi would have cost more than one minor league reliever. Michael is the son of Phillies pitching coach, Rich Dubee.

Nymr83

I like to think that i know prospects, but I've never heard of this guy. Looks like the Phillies got a steal and I have to wonder why the mets couldn't top such a #### offer.

I wouldn't be so sure. The earlier rumors on Wiggy was that he'd go to the Yankees for Scott Proctor. I'm thinking Tampa just wants to build something along the the lines of a respectable bullpen before that talented young rotation forms a suicide pact out of frustration.

metirish - "Astros designate Ensberg for assignment."

Ensberg is in a rapid free fall. He was a promising slugger two years ago. Now, at the age of 31, he finds himself unwanted and likely back in the minor leagues.

DocTee

Apparently it's related to a shoulder injury he sustained awhile back. I see San Diego has also released another once-promising third-baseman, Russell Branyan.

Rumor has the Yanx sending Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for Wilson Betemit.

Yanx originally got Proctor from LA (by dealing Ventura IIRC) and this move clearly signals that they've got some other relief deal up their sleeves; either a MLer or they've committed to bringing up their minor leaguer Chamberlain to fill the hole.

Not sure what exactly they'll do with Betemit; stregthen their bench I guess. He was once everyone's favorite SS prospect before Reyes started moving up, but eventually outgrew that position and never really hit enough to snag a full-time job. Another one of those Brave prospects they dealt while he was hot.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2007 11:19 AM

We're looking at this perhaps a little too much through Yankee goggles. This seems to hurt a potential pennant rival.

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2007 11:26 AM

I don't really think it helps or hurts either team too much.
Just seems a little odd is all. The team with a strong pen trades for a faltering reliever they once had, while the one with a depth problem in the pen gets rid of one for a 3B/SS who'll never play either.

Nymr83

Torre on WFAN the other day seemed to like the idea of getting Chamberlain up to see if he can help out.

I feel that this trade was made to pave the way for another trade that brings in a reliever, but we'll see.

The back of Boston's bullpen is going to be Okajima (0.87 ERA, 0.81 WHIP), Gagne (2.16 ERA, 1.05 WHIP), and Papelbon (2.15 ERA, 0.90 WHIP).

Yikes.

Also, Ken Rosenthal is the MVP of the trade deadline.

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2007 01:51 PM

Gagne has agreed to the trade sending him to Fenway (he had a partial no-trade).

Sox going to great lengths to "Boston Massacre-proof" themselves this season and break the 9-year division run by their neighbors to the south.

Things could be worse, we could have traded for Jose Contreras who just gave up a 1st-inning hit to everyone in the Skank lineup tonight except Mr I-Want-500.

Foretunately, Mr. Mussina is a reciprocal kinda guy. 4-3 Yanx in the 2nd.

]I like this move by the Pirates

I don't quite see it.
Morris has been residing in mediocre land for a while now and is signed for some $10mil per thru next year with the Giants not picking up any money.
Not sure how he fits into Pittsburgh's plan right now, assuming they even have one.
