Raymond Payne Ambres - A 27 y/o, 6' 1" RH hitting & throwing OFer from Beaumont, Tx.
A former 1st round draft pick for the Florida Marlins (27th overalll in 1998) he had a brief stint in MLB with the Royals in 2005 - which is where we picked him up as a minor league FA - and was currently hitting .272/.370/.492 in 300 ABs with New Orleans - his 82 hits include 16 HRs + 18 2Bs

Anyway he's your new backup outfielder, called up to replace Damian Easley who's going on the Bereavement List -- that's a 3-day min/7 day max leave.

Of course, just like most jobs have one.

Didn't a Mets players in recent seasons have to go on the bereavement list?

Cliff Floyd, I think. Perhaps twice. During his time with the Mets he lost a sister and, I think, a grandmother.

The Bereavement List is a recent thing, put in about 4 or 5 years ago.
It gives teams an option of replacing a player for a legit family reason without having to resort to the 15-day DL.

Chip was on-deck to PH in the 9th when the last out was made.
Tough break kid.

Chip is described as a "toolsey" type who teams have tried to convert into a baseball player. I believe the Mets had an ex-college quarterback a few years ago (Florida State U?).
Dave Winfield was a multi-sport player in school who immediately made it big in the majors. D.J. Dozier never did.

Kenny Kelly was the ex-college footballer who was in the Mets' system for a while.

Who is describing Chip Ambres as toolsey?

From http://www.soxprospects.com/players/ambres-chip.htm:
="SoxProspects.com"]Scouting Report: Speedy outfielder with excellent plate discipline. Said to be a great, hard-working teammate. Great range in the outfield with a weak arm. Ambres has been slowed down by leg injuries in the past.

And this is from http://www2.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/players/Chip_Ambres/

]Assets
A right-handed hitter with some power, Ambres also knows how to take a walk and runs well.

Flaws
Has some struggles hitting with runners aboard and could stand to cut down on the strikeouts.

Career potential
Solid fourth outfielder at best.

D.J. Dozier was an All-American running back for the Penn State Nittany Lions in the mid 1980's. He led the Nittany Lions to two National Championship games during his 4 year career. After an unsuccessful run at an NFL career, he decided to pursue a career in MLB. The Mets drafted him and I think he eventually earned a "cup of coffee" with the Mets sometime in the early 1990's.

I forget where I saw it - may have been a pre- minor league season article on each of the Mets minor league afiliates.
If I had remembered I would have posted the link.

"We're talking about the Mets here," Ambres said. "You do something big like this, that's something that goes down in history. I'm very proud of it."
