So am I so totally out of it now ...

that I'm the only one not to know about this multi-city, mega-star, huge media coverage, Save-the-World concert extravaganza ... or has this just been grossly under-publicized?

Not that I particularly care one way or the other - I can do without millionaire rock stars who take private jets to hot-spots around the world in order to pump out mega-watts of music and tell me how to save energy - I just had no idea this thing even existed until I was flipping channels between innings.

And didn't the same cast of characters just do this same thing a week or so back for some dead princess?

What are you talking about?

Sting is appearing, and I await his instructions.

NBC and all its affiliates: Bravo, MSNBC, CNBC, Pet-storeNBC, etc. are televising some world-wide concert taking place in about 6 or 7 spots around the world that is apparently so popular that I didn't know it existed until an hour or two ago and you apparently didn't know about until just now.

I just saw Madonna during the last commercial from - somewhere I dunno - pretending to play the guitar while singing in front of lots of dancing gay men.

Oh I don't feel bad; I was just curious if it was me or bad publicity.
Apparently it's the latter.

There's been a Duran Duran sighting.

I didn't hear about it until Thursday, so yeah...bad publicity. I thought I was the only one in the dark...

Wound up watching most of it, while flipping back and forth with the 17-inning marathon. Initially had free tickets, but instead wound up babysitting my girlfriend's sister's kids -- 8 and 5 -- (the kids' parents went to the show instead. First concert they'd been to in 4 years, we owed them several favors, etc etc.)

The good:
Madonna (London). Ray of Light, La Isla Bonita -- big hits with the crowd. She does the spectacle thing like a master.

Alicia Keys. Great, well-chosen covers. Also, the duet with Keith Urban on Gimme Shelter was pretty cool.

Chilli Peppers and Foo Fighters (London) both rocked.

The ok:
Bon Jovi. Well, they did come out with JBJ saying "this is my house" (uhh, Jon...I think there's another famous rock star from New Jersey who actually has you beat there...) but the performance was good. Richie Sambora does not look ready for their upcoming tour, though. Glad he's done with rehab though.

Beastie Boys (London) didn't seem to get the crowd involved but they were good.

Metallica. I still think Lars Ulrich is a tool, but they do a very good live show.

The performance from Antartica was actually kinda cool. (The band didn't suck, either).

Ehh:
Lenny Kravitz (Brazil). "Let Love Rule" isn't that good of a song, and Lenny, you've got no business going out into the crowd to do nothing but raise your fist in the air several times (while not even singing). The Brazilians didn't even seem that into it, and it was a free show to boot.

Roger Waters. Playing with essentially a Pink Floyd cover band, but granted, Waters wrote or co-wrote the songs, so he's got every right to play them. He can't sing though. The Inflatable Pig was clearly a big hit with the crowd, given the number of flashes going off when it was up.

The bad:
Kanye West and John Mayer guesting on Message in a Bottle with the Police. Introduced as "Can-yay West" by Sting. All day we were concerned that the Bonomeister was going to show up to guest with The Police (reprising the role from the '86 Amnesty concert at Giants Stadium) and we would be missing it. Instead, we missed that stinking pile of crap.

Overall it was ok but nothing truly special. Certainly not like what happened two years ago during the Live8 broadcast when the G.F. and I kept asking ourselves "Why, exactly didn't we go to London for this?!?!"

As is said ever year on Passover:
"Why is this night different from all other nights?"

What happened in '86 was classick. The Police, the only ones who knew they were done, handed over their instruments to U2, as if to say, "We're done being the best band in the world; your turn now."

Sting, in a great moment of unity among assholes, turned to the rest of the band before the ceremonial handofff and said, "Make sure they're out of tune."

If there was a repeat, the symbolic statement would've been, "OK, we've been carrying this mantle for 20 years after you carried it for, what? Two, two and a half years? You can have your instruments back n... . What's that? You're too old and have been screwing around too long to be great again? So sorry. Is Radiohead around?"

So, let me get this straight - They spent all of this energy trotting all of these stars all around the globe in an effort to preach to us about saving energy.

I just love Gore's, "do what I say, not what I do", bit.

That's a pretty huge oversimplification. My understanding was that the various artists performed based on where they were already on tour (ie. Kravitz in Brazil, Linkin Park in Japan).

Not that I don't see your point. I also found the large number of SUVs (as reported to me by people in attendance) in the parking lot also ironic. However, if you watched the broadcast (NBC had a 3-hour highlight show, or the extended version on Sundance/CNBC), I thought the issue was dealt with in a fair and even-handed manner.

Young Sting would have taken a flyswatter to Kanye West. What a trainwreck.
