In the ladder challenge, I unsuccessfully argued that "Set Me Free Rosalie" was a wonderful update of Motown stomp by Los Lobos. I think it was awesome to see these Mexicans from East LA oupunk the punks and outsoul the soul survivors.

Well, there were a lot of Smokey wannabees at the time. All of these bands reference him and the Miracles, if only one explicitly. All are working it here in the eighties. All are non-black. All are pretty good or better. Your vote will decide which is best.

"Forever"
Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul
(crap video quality)

"Set Me Free, Rosalie"
Los Lobos
(Eat it, doubters.)

"When Smokey Sings"
ABC
(Long prologue.)

"Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah"
The Pogues
(Don't vote on the teeth. Either way)

"When Love Breaks Down"
Prefab Sprout
(Cha says it looks like a Heart video.)

Yeah, I didn't expect a lot of action. Maybe from the Ireland contingent.

I went with ABC even if Martin Fry agrees it's a lost cause.

]Should I say "yes, I match his best"
Then I would be a liar

That Little Steven recording is the wrong speed and stuff. I don't like the chorus of that song but I like the rest of it.

I'll just stick with the real Smokey Robinson, thanks.

At least they were doing something original.

No they weren't. That C&C Music Factory record reference dSurvivor, for Pete's sake. Survivor!

"Originality is the fine art of remembering what you hear but forgetting where you heard it."
--- Laurence J. Peter (1919-1988)

"Where we find’s ones originality is the failure to imitate one’s influences."
--- John Lennon (1940-1980)

"That’s probably the only saving grace we’ve got right now is our failure to imitate one’s influences."
--- Dale Watson (1962- ), paraphrasing Lennon

By the way, this poll sucks. Should've gone with the Quiet Riot poll. Should've went with the Bangles.

I was all out of desert-island nominee inspiration last week. I had something in mind over the weekend but away it went.

Went with ABC. I have to admit, it's such an upbeat, catchy tune. When I worked at the radio station we had this one in the library and it was one song they had that I didn't mind playing. I think it captures Smokey's spirit the best. I also like The Pogues and Little Steven, but ABC did the best job.
