If Pelfrey's ever going to get a win, Now Is The Time.

Not only is the opponent right, but the opportunity is Shirley there to unseat So-So next time around.

Hanrahan is making his MLB debut tonite. He's a 25-y.o. minor league free agent who was 5-4, 3.70 at AAA with 71 Ks in 75 IP.

Keith was offering a strange, nigh upon incredible, explanation of Pelfrey's lack of MLB success to date in the top of the first:

Pelfrey was formerly a FB-Curve pitcher, and the Mets switched him over into a FB-Slider pitcher in ST, "So naturally it's to be expected that he wouldn't have immediate success with the new slider" or WTTE.

Hold the phone! You're telling me, Keith, the Mets deliberately did something to Pelfrey that THEY KNEW WOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON HIS PITCHING IN THE SHORT RUN and, knowing that, they then chose to make him a regular starter? What part of this do you think is utter crap? Even I don't think the Mets are so self-destructive to do that.

Wiggy has been traded for Dan Wheeler.

The next time that Pelfrey is scheduled to start, why don't the Mets just forfeit because the result will be the same. Brian Lawrence is pitching great in AAA but let's call up the guy with the 0-7 record. It's not like the Mets are in a pennant race! And if Omar was showcasing Pelfrey, well who would want him now... I mean, other than the Mets?

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 28 2007 05:55 PM

So much for Pelfrey's claiming of a rotation spot on the strength of this start.

Edit: I'm not campaigning to trade him. He's got ability... you just have to wait for it. Getting batted around and making bad pitches is what young pitchers do.

if anyone understands Keith's logic (or the Mets' logic, if Keith was accurate and I've rendered his thoughts correctly), I;d love to know what he meant.

Keith's been at Shea since probably ten o'clock this morning after a night
game. Who knows what the fuck he's thinking or saying.

You're whackier than he is if it makes you think of Wiggy imho.

Kid Carsey
Jul 28 2007 06:17 PM

Cy Hanrahan making the most of his first game in the bigs after seven years
in the minors. Wow.

Puttin' up a dough nut through four, and he hit a triple in his first big league AB
to boot for chrissake.

I'm assuming (hoping) that Pelfrey goes back to NO after the game... is it allowable to recall Chip Ambres yet? He was DFA'd and just cleared waivers.

It didn't make me think of Wiggy--Gary announced that Wiggy had been traded for Dan Wheeler today. Does sharing that information make me insane, or was I born that way, iyho?

Kid Carsey
Jul 28 2007 06:47 PM

I was kidding, ira. I know it's not always easy to tell. Try this rubric: when I
write something so silly, so paranoid, so loopy that you're sure I must be
joking around, I'm probably not serious.

No matter what haps, this guy has had a debut more memorable than I'm comfortable with.

Edgy DC
Jul 28 2007 07:08 PM

Another rally in there?

Yeah, I'm gonna tell my tale!
Come on,
Come on, give a listen!

Cause I was born lonely
Down by the riverside
Learned to spin fortune wheels
And throw dice
And I was just thirteen
When I had to leave home
Knew i couldn't stick around
I had to roam
Ain't good looking
But you know I ain't shy
Ain't afraid to look a girl
Right in the eye
So if you need some lovin'
And you need it right away
Take a little time out
And maybe I'll stay

But I got to ramble! (Ramblin' man)
Oh, I got to gamble! (Gamblin' man)
Got to, got to ramble! (Ramblin' man)
I was born a ramblin' gamblin' man!

Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Yeah, alright!
Here we go now now!

I hope you got
'Cause you know I need some
I ain't around to love you now
And I gotta run
Gotta keep moving
Never gonna slow down
You can have your funky world
See you 'round

But I got to ramble! (Ramblin' man)
Oh, I got to gamble! (Gamblin' man)
Got to, got to ramble! (Ramblin' man)
I was born a ramblin' gamblin' man!

I believe Glavine was spotted with his spikes on an inning or so ago.

Depending on the severity of LoDuca's hammie, Sandy Alomar, Jr. may have a short stay in New Orleans.

I'm guessing that the DFA status may prevent him from turning around immediately. I think we're getting DiFelice.

With Heilman due up and an injured Beltran the last man on the bench.

This homestand has not gone very well. This should have been an opportunity to beat up on the have nots of the league, but the Mets have failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

The Mets have gone 3-3 against the two teams sporting the worst records in the the NL. The deciding game tomorrow looms large. They really need to win so they can at least hit the road with a winning hometand.

DocTee
Jul 28 2007 08:44 PM

That's what kills me: they have a winning road trip against SD and LA, then come home and split with Pittsburgh and Washington.

i misse game 2 today, what the fuck??? 6 innings 3 runs by Pelfrey is what you pray for given what he's done so far in the majors. feliciano picked the nationals to show he's mortal? Glavine got an AB? way to burn your bench willie.

They sent down a position player to make room for Pelfrey.
Beltran hurt and unavailable, they could've DLed him but opted not to.
LoDuca got hurt during the game.
Easley and Anderson were used appropriately.

What else would you have done re: the bench?

I'm not sure I understand why Willie chose to PH Anderson rather than Castro. As the announcing team was raving, it made no sense to burn Anderson, since WIllie HAD to put Castro into the game defensively, and that move left him with no bench at all past the 7th inning.

I got tired in the 8th inning so I didn't hear further discussion, but I was frankly disappointed not to read an extensive discussion of this utterly boneheaded manuever here (yes, I heard that Anderson was 3-for-5 or something against that pitcher, but that's a tiny sample size)--instead I read the CPF to learn that WIllie is, as Gwreck says, God, or at least appropriate.

I mean, is anyone else here completely disgusted with Willie making moves that are utterly counter-intuitive, so much so that the announcers said IN ADVANCE OF THE AT-BAT that it's a no-brainer to PH Castro instead of Anderson, and then DURING the at-bat admit to being utterly puzzled by Willie's move. "It's a situation he didn't have to be in," Gary says, of the pitcher's spot being filled by a pitcher in the ninth.

Here's what Willie said after the game, according to this morning's Daily News: "(Anderson) is a professional pinch-hitter. I'd rather have him in that situation," Randolph said. "If I'd had Castro pinch-hit there, they'd have brought in (setup man Jon Rauch)."

Instead of my commenting on Willie's use of his bench, here's what the subway squakers had to say about this brainless move by a stubborn, clueless moronager: http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/subwaysquawkers/

OE: spelled "intuitive" wrong

Gwreck
Jul 29 2007 02:32 PM

The point is that the bench situation is also a product of what Omar gave Willie to work with.

I'd like him to just DL Beltran already and let him rest and get healthy. I don't know if this will be the second or third time in the past few years (May '06 and May '07, IIRC, but there may have been another, plus the entire freakin 2005 season) that he's been out for several games with a strained muscle but didn't go on the DL and then slumped afterwards because -- you guessed it -- he wasn't completely healthy.

I don't really care that Newhan and Johnson can't really hit, I just want them to stop fucking around with Beltran. It's not like we're missing all that much with him out of the lineup anyway!

Edgy DC
Jul 29 2007 02:43 PM

Well, by the end, it was also a product of Randolph's work, as he he pinch-hit Anderson over Castro when Castro was going into the game anyhow, because LoDuca was hurt.

that was what i meant by "way to burn your bench." yeah, willie is in a tough spot with Beltran on the roster and not playing and a position player going down to bring pelfrey up, but thats all the more reason not to burn two position players when you can use one.

Edgy DC
Jul 29 2007 04:58 PM

It's hard to say how much it cost Radolph. Maybe Anderson was absolutely the right guy there. But he wasn't right enough.

I'm not sure that a guy who is in too much discomfort to make pitching changes can make such pressure choices, and I'm not sure he shouldn't have taken a week or two off.
