If you had to pick a player right NOW(!!!!) to play second for the rest of the year, that is, get 90% of the starts, who would you pick? Assume everyone stays healthy.

My preference would be "other" as in the trade route.

Elster88
Jul 19 2007 10:30 PM

So you're not going to pick anyone in the poll? Boo.

Nymr83
Jul 19 2007 10:34 PM

i'll pick Easley given the options, but i'm not sure any 1 guy we currently have is an answer, just keep them all around and play the hottest hitter of the moment the most.

I'm voting pot pourri.

A little bit of this
A little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs
A little bit of pain

Gotay

Edgy DC
Jul 19 2007 10:39 PM

I like chicks.

Seriously, with Easley facing lefties and Gotay and Valentin splitting the righties, I have no problem with playing a different guy every day until one of them distinguishes himself. Gotay's obviously been doing some of that.

Elster88
Jul 19 2007 10:51 PM

But the poll needs votes.

Gwreck
Jul 19 2007 11:03 PM

The answer is Gotay. I'm fine with giving Easley the ABs against righties.

Marlon can platoon some with Milledge but I see him primarily as the main LH pinch hitter.

Valentin isn't hitting, so he gets the bench. Seriously. Gotay needs to be in the lineup.

Voted for Gotay.

I went with Gotay, but I have no confidence that I'm right.

I voted Valentin 'cause no one else had and somebody should. Also, he plays the best defense (please note that I am currently Rey Ordonez). That being said, I really favor the "give them all some starts" method.

Edgy DC
Jul 20 2007 08:55 AM

I was thinking that. I'm picturing the four of them playing defense, and even with his reduced range, I think Valentin is still the best defender of the crew.

But it's greatly reduced, and that edge is hardly a deal breaker. He's hit the ball hard this week.

As a forum what are we not seeing with Gotay that Ron,Gary and Keith are?,I like Gotay but these guys rave about him, saying things like"be tough for Willie to sit him now","no idea how he can sit him".That was an exchange Ron and Gary had last night(something like that).

When I say as a forum I should say I don't see that unbridled enthusiasm for Gotay that the booth guys have.

Edgy DC
Jul 20 2007 09:02 AM

I'm enthusiastic. I just know that other shoes drop.

Ron, Gary, Keith do too. It will be tough for Willie to sit him as well as he's played. It won't be tough at all if he goes three hitless games.

I went with Gotay, though I'd rather see a platoon of Easley/Gotay.

OlerudOwned
Jul 20 2007 10:17 AM

I'd keep throwing Gotay out there while he's hot.

If he cools down, we can settle into a platoon situation.

If he doesn't, awesome.

Jul 20 2007 11:20 AM

I took Gotay purely on vibe, I don't know what the right answer is.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 20 2007 11:33 AM

I think the right answer is to give the best guy a chance to win the position.

I voted Gotay because my hunch is that he'd be the ultimate winner. But there's really no need to anoint anyone right now.

The answer is "Gotay," and it's amazing to me that this is even a subject for discussion. You've got three retreads whose best days are literally a decade or more ago, and one young guy with a world of potential,* and a club that needs offense like Paris Hilton's bush needs aeration, and "you guys" (tm) are debating who to give the job to?

*currently batting .354

Well he did get 82% of the vote. I posted the poll to see if the rest of the forum agreed.

This gives you more ammo against Willie, not so much the forum that is 82% in agreement with you.

Well a fractured tibia for Valentin (off a foul ball) pretty much eliminates him from the competition for now.

DocTee
Jul 20 2007 10:43 PM

Folks on the Royals pages seem to be down on Gotay-- saying things like his BA is inflated (limited AB) and his defense horrendous. They've seen more of him that we, but I think it's sour grapes mo than anything else.

Rockin' Doc
Jul 21 2007 05:47 AM

I know it's not an option in the poll, but I favor a platoon with Gotay facing the righthanders and Easley taking on the lefties.

Bad year or not, I hate to see Valentin get hurt. He's likely done for the year.

This is to play 2nd base, not Tic Tac Toe.

I voted Gotay, too. I do like what I have seen from him.

MFS62
Jul 21 2007 06:16 AM

I interpreted the question to mean who will be playing second base this year rather than who would we like to be playing second base this year.
I'd rather it be Gotay, but I feel we'll be seeing a lot of Mr. Anderson there.

Valentin might want to get that partially torn ACL operated on and cash in his season, rather than hope he can come back in September with that and a recently healed fracture.

Sure, because they saw him over parts of 2 seasons (nearly 500 PAs) hitting all of .242/.292/.355,
so it's only natural to assume that his current .354/.385/.525 is a small-sample (106 PAs) fluke
that'll start reverting to the norm any day now.

The other side to the coin is that he was just 21 & 22 in his two seasons there, so you hope
that the 24 y/o model we've got now is the new & improved model who was simply given
up on too early.

Maybe that's true, maybe not ... but it looks like we're going to get at least a decent chance to
find out.

I haven't seen enough of his defense to swing me one way or the other so far.

Meet your new second baseman.
Just heard on the radio that Anderson Hernandez was recalled from AAA.
He was actually hot there, raising his average about 30 points to .280 in recent weeks.

if Anderson Hernandez starts over Gotay, willie should be fired.

Rockin' Doc

His stay with the Mets should be pretty brief. I would imagine that it shuldn't be long before Damion Easley returns to the team.

On the Pre-game show, Omar Gawd kept referring to Anderson Hernandez as "Marlon Anderson," which created no little confusion. Eddie C. helped him out, about like how you'd help out a retarded six-year old trying to put a sentence together.

Yes, I understand, Yancy: this information is tedious for you to keep reading.

I'll guess he's not here to be the primary secondbaseman.

Edgy DC
Jul 21 2007 04:02 PM

Well, Hernandez's defense didn't get him into the lineup today, but Gotay makes an argument for it.

smg58
Jul 22 2007 07:58 AM

From what I've seen, Gotay's problems in the field don't appear to have anything to do with limited range so much as some lapses in concentration, especially on potential double plays. That should be something he can work on. Plus I think the Mets need to show sustained life on offense in general before I'd consider Anderson Hernandez a risk they can afford at this point. At this point I think Gotay's earned an extended look, and hopefully he can keep the fielding issues to a bare minimum, and certainly not as costly as yesterday's throw turned out to be.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 22 2007 08:00 AM

A lack of concentration contributes to stuff like throwing errors.

His real problem is that he's just slightly slow to the ball. I don't know if that's concentration or just that he's slow to react.

No. But I thnk it's foolish for us to come up with scenarios to hate the manager for.

No I don't. But I don't see how that really matters.

Nymr said he'll call for Willie's release if he starts AHer. I tend to agree.

Eh, I guess I see your point. I think Willie should be fired if he starts Castro in center. Kinda stupid.

Nymr83
Jul 22 2007 01:23 PM

not nearly the same thing, one (starting Hernandez at 2B regularly right now) requires a manager to make a dumb indefensible move, the other (starting Castro in CF) requires that the manager be almost literally brain dead.

Elster88
Jul 22 2007 02:15 PM

They're pretty much the same thing because the odds of them happening are about zero for both.
