The "Scrappiest" Mets

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 08:22 AM

OK, so my four-year old wouldn't sleep last night. So naturally the two of us sit in the dark watching game 4 of the '69 Series, where I heard "which number is Tom Seaver" about 50 times. Following the game, Mets Magazine was on.
One of the features was a Top 5 countdown of the "Scrappiest" Mets. They did not define "scrappiest" but I think we all know what they mean.

For those who did not watch, name your top 5 "Scrappiest" Mets. Note: #1 was a tie.

1.

Backman, Dykstra, Foli, Randle, McEwing.

Are we trying to guess what they had? Or coming up with our own? Is Club Scrappy still whites only?

Reyes.

Knight.

Backman.

Hunt.

Stoins.

Benjamin Grimm

I considered Reyes, but didn't go with him because he's probably too talented to be scrappy, at least by my loose definition of the term.

I should have thought of Stearns though. But maybe he's not small enough for the term to fit.

Backman has to be #1. No one did more with less.

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 08:35 AM

Backman - Yes
Dykstra - Yes
Foli, Randle, McEwing - No

Reyes, Knight, Stearns - No
Hunt - Yes

And to Edgy's question - it is not an All-White club.

1. Dykstra
1. Backman
2.
3.
4.
5. Hunt

Yeah it's hard to define,my thinking is that the player should be not crap but not great, not very big,has two tools and one speed but hustles.

Joe McEwing
Dykstra
Wiggi
Pratt
Agbayani

of course most of the players I list are big.

Mookie?

Of the three remaining:

One was involved in a huge trade.
One played less than 100 games in a Met uniform.
One had two tours of duty with the Mets, and played in the postseason with them.

The last two, to me, were surprising to make the list.

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 08:43 AM

No to Mookie.
No to Harrelson.

Also, no to Wiggy, Pratt, and Agbayani, although one was a teammate to all three.

Sure, but that risks playing into the thinking that they do it with physical virtues, and we do it with moral ones.

And they and we aren't always racial categories. Clearly, to too many Yankee afficianados, Jeter is one of us, the Rod one of them.

But you've got to watch out for these terms spreading that kind of thinking. I expect a white player equally as talented as Reyes would generate tons of hits when his named was Googled with the word scrappy.

I Google "Jose Reyes."

I get 1,050,000 hits.

I Google "Jose Reyes" plus "scrappy."

I get 585 hits. Or 0.06%

I Google "Lenny Dykstra."

I get 75,900 hits.

I Google "Lenny Dykstra" plus "scrappy."

I get 1,140 hits. Or 1.50%

Hardly exact science, but was Lenny that untalented? Was his dirt that much more meaningful?

My clue is:

I can't believe you guys don't watch Julie's show. It's the biggest thing on
cable television.

Of course, you guys probably aren't Julie Obsessed and don't have a fifty foot
restraining order against you but we won't go into that.

Still looking for the Met involved in a big trade, and the Met who played less than 100 games.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2007 09:11 AM

C'mon, Lenny Harris --- huge trade, post-season, two tours of duty.

I'd even argue that he played less than 100 games in a Mets uniform, as I'm still not comfortable with calling the black jersey a Mets uniform.

There was one cryptic clue thrown out there already. I'll add to it by saying: It was for a TV show.

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 09:51 AM

No, but like Mitch, he played many defensive positions. One of which he played quite poorly.

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 09:54 AM

So, to recap:

One player:
- involved in major trade
- Kevin McReynolds? No, but getting warmer.
- played many positions, one quite poorly

Other player:
- Less than 100 games as a Met
- Hit John Smoltz harder than any other Met

Hubie Brooks.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 31 2007 10:04 AM

Hubie Brooks has already been eliminated.

One guy who was in a major trade and played many positions was Mike Jorgensen. It couldn't be him, could it?

HahnSolo

Not Jorgy.

Benjamin Grimm
Jul 31 2007 10:13 AM

In this major trade, did the scrappy player in question come to the Mets, or was he one of the departing players?

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2007 10:13 AM

I was going to say this earlier, based on the notion that scrappy could mean "gets in scraps," but I dismissed it as the stupidest notion I ever had.

Now I know, guys who write for TV turn stupid notions into broadcast gold.

The answer is John Cangelosi.

HahnSolo
Jul 31 2007 10:15 AM

Cangelosi Yes!

And the other player departed in a major deal.
