Was anybody anywhere near Grand Central when that pipe exploded yesterday evening?

That must have been a heckuva scene.

I was walking into a meeting yesterday evening when my colleague got texted by his brother about "explosion at GS Station, all of midtown closed." Scared the pants off of us. Glad you're all well.

I was lucky enough to be in New Jersey when this happened. Before they moved us to Class D office space downtown, I used to be at that corner juist about every day at that time.

My office is right there. I entered the subway to get on the #7 train at 42nd street between 3rd and Lex about 90 seconds before the explosion. Had no clue until I got home an hour later, turned on the TV and then had to start calling/text messaging everyone to let them know I was ok.

Had gotten off the 4 train and was walking into GCT just as the explosion happened.

Walked swiftly to my MetroNorth commuter train and got on. People were freaking out, running for the exits. National Guardsmen started immediately evacuating GCT. I evaded them and got to my train hoping to get out of Dodge.

Guy runs onto my train yelling something about a plane coming down right above us. Couldn't immediately get cell service.

It was a bit freaky there for a while, but having been in the City and downtown during 9/11, the blackout and the transit strike, I've learned that its simply best to remain calm and keep my eyes and ears open.

Within a few minutes we were informed that 'a transformer blew up in the subway' My train departed about 10 minutes late but that was pretty much it. My commute this morning wasn't even that bad.

My wife did freak out when while futzing around the kitchen she saw 'EXPLOSION AT GRAND CENTRAL' on the TV at 6:00pm and knew that's pretty much where I am everyday at that time. She called me on my cell and didn't immediately get me. When I answered she said she almost cried.

Guess what I got last night.

Who thinks, "There's a plane crashing! I better run underground to a commuter train and freak out! Surely I can do this faster than a jet crashes and they can all take adequate precautionary measures!"

well, the same thing happened to me, except i didn't successfully evade the Guardsmen, and so i was forced out onto the street. Since i saw the building next to GCT smoking, i thought it best to just start heading west. Remembering my experience during last year's blackout of being stranded in manhattan, I bribed an off-duty cabbie to drive me to New Rochelle. When i heard on the radio that GCT was OPEN, the cab was on the Henry Hudson parkway, above the GW bridge. "fuck", i thought. There goes $100 i could've blown on coke and whores.

People around GCT were in hysterics, pur panic mode. I was just pissed because i knew getting home was going to be a bitch.

I should've just evaded the military personnel with more aplomb and gotten on the darn train.

I got lucky because I was already inside GCT when they started pushing everyone out. As they approached me I just went the other way towards the trains.

Too bad about those whores.

Led to the first time I've ever heard a news anchor describe a billowing black cloud of asbestos as "schmutz".

You're lucky you were already off the subway, soup.

By the time I left work the subways weren't even running. I figured a cab would be impossible, so I walked from Union Square up Park Ave to Grand Central. I made it as far as 38th Street and everything was cordoned off.

Everyone had to hoof it all the way over to 6th Ave, then up to 47th Street, then back over to Madison, where you could get into GCT through that northern tunnel.

I was glad the AC on the 9:07 was cranked up... and that big Fosters was excellent.

Glad everyone's ok.

Anyone have an opinion on whether GCT should still be avoided over the weekend? We
were half thinking of doing something in the city either Sat or Sun.

As of today you could even walk on Lex near Grand Central. Aside from driving in the immediate area, nothing restricted anywhere. No problems.
