A natural jump from the Bangles is to Matthew Sweet, a longtime friend of Susanna Hoffs and her colloborator with Ming Tea and Sid 'n' Susie. (Somebody at another site said they had to collaborate because he's apparently eaten the other Bangles.)

Anyhow, forget the added baggage he's taken on. If he's going to tool around with side projects, it's a good time for a retrospective Very Important Poll.

We're including here all the songs he did video clips of, even though (1) his first two solo albums, as an Athens-based jangly-synthy-popper, bombed, and you've probably not heard the first clip, (2) there are two other early singles on video --- "Easy" and "Vertigo" --- that I can't find, (3) there are three video clips from Girlfriend, but there were five or so radio hits, and (4) for some songs he did more than one clip.

Save Time for Me (1986)

Girlfriend (1991)

Evangeline (1991, there was a video clip, but I can't find it, and instead hit you with this concert footage from 2004)

I've Been Waiting (1991)

Ugly Truth (electric version, 1993)

Time Capsule (1993)

Superdeformed (1993, only version I found opens with a Pantene commercial)
Can't embed this one either.

Sick of Myself (1995)

We're the Same (1995)

Come to California (1997)

Where You Get Love (1997)

Two things before I vote "Girlfriend":

1) That clip doesn't do "Evangeline" justice. You can't hear the sweet guitar runs.

2) Too bad no vid of "Divine Intervention" lives on You Tube.

The guitar intro alone for 'Girlfriend' just about ends this contest before it begins.

I voted for "Sick of Myself". I always loved the intro to that one, even more so than "Girlfriend".

Similarity score between Batty and Seawolf goes up yet again.

I love "Girlfriend," "Where You Get Love," "Time Capsule," and "We're The Same." But "Sick Of Myself" is the one for me. It's one of those songs that I'll love forever; it was one of my favorite songs we played when I was in a band. Two thumbs up.

I thought about doing a Sweet poll like this but was afraid all it would reveal was how much butt "Girlfriend" kicked. Which it does.

I like all kindasa Sweet and still know that's his career's home run.

Here's my top 11 (another day and this may change):

1. Girlfriend -- Can't be beaten. I once drove to Florida listening to "Girlfriend" on cassette tape over and over and over.

**

2. Evangeline --- same trip

3. We're the Same -- Love it

4. Sick of Myself -- Good point about the beginning.

**

5. Where You Get Love -- "Blue Sky on Mars" flopped but this was a good cut

6. I've Been Waiting

**

7. Save Time for Me -- 1st time I heard that one: totally 80s production, sounding like the psych furs. Same haircut too! Solid writing though

8. Superdeformed -- Thought 'Altered Beast' was too noisy

9. Come to California

10. Ugly Truth

11. Time Capsule

He was a teenager in Lincoln, Nebraska and started a correspondence with Michael Stipe and Mitch Easter, mailing them his four-track demos. They convinced him to move out to Athens, but he went through about four failed bands (including a Stipe side-project and a band with Stipe's sister), plus a failed solo career with A&M and a failed marriage.

Girlfriend was really a last gasp for him. American dream kind of stuff.

That's why it breaks my heart to see "Time Capsule" buried down there. It's like his return to the Athens jangle, coming to terms with his failed first career. That could almost be REM backing him up on that.

It's not like I don't dig the jangle. I'm all about the jangle. I jangle all the way.

I came to this thread for Tuesday Weld pictures. I'm disappointed.
