Double, single, Floyd lines into DP as Beltran is foolishly caught between bases and another 1st inning opportunity is wasted.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 02:28 PM

WWSB's refusal to get run in a game no matter how pathetic the call leads to Sandy Alomar taking an ejection for the team.

Ah, hell. What happened? I wish Willie would grow a set.

JEEZUSFUCKINCHRIST - is ANYTHING going to go our way in the near future???!!?

Not that we're playing so as to deserve many breaks. But even if you ignore the: our HR 2-feet foul/theirs 2 feet fair syndrome - there's now been 3 calls in 3 days that I've never seen before.

- First the Cameron drop on the glove/hand transfer
- Then the 'I'll run into this pitch while bunting and get awarded 1st even though it was a strike' call
- And now this 'Oh, I called time for no fucking reason even though the play was still in progress so we're going to erase that out you just recorded' call

When it rains ...

I'm as frustrated as everyone, but Willie getting thrown out of a game or
growing some (or getting bigger) testicles at this point ain't gonna be the
focus of my frustration.

seawolf17
Jul 31 2005 02:52 PM

Hey Carlos, you hear those boos? They might sound eerily similar to what you might hear this week from your own fans.

Note: I'm not saying I plan to boo him (we'll be there for Maddux-Ishii on Saturday, and I will save all my booing for Kaz Ishii when Willie lifts him in the middle of the third inning with the bases loaded and four runs already in)... but I think these Astros fans are giving some of the lesser lights around Shea some ideas.

seawolf17
Jul 31 2005 02:59 PM

Dammit, Ishii! Throw a goddamn fastball to second base! What the hell was this floofy toss crap!?

seawolf17
Jul 31 2005 03:01 PM

Nice DP, Cairo to Reyes to Mientkiewicz (not exactly Tinker to Evers to Chance, is it?) and there are two out with a runner at third.

And just as I type that, Ensberg doubles into the gap and it's 2-0 Houston.

Can we put Ishii on the DL? On waivers? On the next Mars rover mission? On steroids? Something? Anything?

Jul 31 2005 03:02 PM

I'm done for today. I can't watch the rest of this. Talk with you all later.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 03:04 PM

bang, pow. Take that, Oswalt.

Bret Sabermetric
Jul 31 2005 03:14 PM

Funny, that's almost exactly what Jack Ruby said.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 03:22 PM

Friggin Ishii.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 03:34 PM

Beltran is the second shooter. bang, Oswalt. Got ya.

And STFU Houston fans.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 03:42 PM

Interesting comment from the guy in the Houston booth.

"A playoff season like he (Beltran) had can help fans forget you only drove in seven runs in September."

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:05 PM

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Biggio and Bruntlett and the Astros re-take the lead.

If you're name begins with B, you're no friend to me.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 04:11 PM

That was Padilla's first ER allowed as a Met

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:12 PM

Qualls is an enemy just for sounding like "Quails."

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 04:13 PM

Fucking Cairo gets set up by a Reyes sac bunt and he grounds the first pitch to short, failing to advance the runner.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:19 PM

Crazy steal of third by Anderson.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:21 PM

Theah'tis!

These are the new new Mets --- getting two-out hits.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 04:21 PM

Garner: "Did I say 'Gallo?' I meant CALLOW!"

Goofy version of "God Bless America."

Aaron Heilman: Relieved reliever

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:33 PM

They didn't get Lane, but really nice play at both ends.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:36 PM

DP ends the seventh. Let's get 'em Cammie.

DOUBLE!

KC
Jul 31 2005 04:37 PM

Cammy doubles in his first post-trading-deadline AB to start the eighth.

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2005 04:38 PM

Pull the ball, don't bunt Mienty!!!!

Edgy DC

Minky singles but is held by Acta as a strange side-effect of this pinball-machine park.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:42 PM

Mets go ahead on the infield-in single by Castritto.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 04:47 PM

Mientkiewicz didn't go home... why?

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2005 04:49 PM

I send Minky there also.
Worst that happens is that he's out and it's 1st & 3rd/2 outs - as opposed to 2nd & 3rd w/2 ... but with Reyes at 1st it's almost as good.

Make THEM make the tough play.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 04:50 PM

Looked to me as if Minky missed the sign, not Anderson, who was halfway to third.

Jul 31 2005 04:50 PM

Nasty pitch from Dan.

In the useless info department Steve Phillips will be doing the Sunday Night Baseball game, Joe Morgan is in Cooperstown.

A nice one,two ,three inning for the Mets.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 04:59 PM

Beltran's Revenge.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 05:00 PM

Maybe all Beltran needed was home cookin'.

I wish he didn't need four days before it worked, of course.

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2005 05:02 PM

Let's kick this Springer guy's ass!

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 05:05 PM

Howcome we've had two steals of third today, but neither time did the trailing runner advance?

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 05:09 PM

Hammerin' Cameron with an RBi single.

Frayed Knot
Jul 31 2005 05:09 PM

Beltran to 'Stros fans: "F--- You"

Cammy to Met fans: "F--- You"

Floyd to Oswald: "F--- You"

It's just an F--- You kinda day.

Edgy DC

Edgy DC

Everybody hitting this inning.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 05:21 PM

Graves time?

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 31 2005 05:22 PM

Loopy was already warm

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2005 05:34 PM

Not warm enough to keep the Astros out of Hopeville, but the Mets win.

Rotblatt
Jul 31 2005 05:41 PM

Don't forget Mientkiewicz's F___ You to everyone.

He's been having a nice June & July around his benchings. . . .

And Castro's looking like more and more of a decent Plan B for next year if we can't get a young catcher . . .

metirish
Jul 31 2005 10:34 PM

Are the Mets a big draw or was this all about Beltran, this four game series drew 172,835, the most ever for the Astros.

SwitchHitter
Jul 31 2005 11:14 PM

The Astros were also on the tail-end of a 7-game winning streak, which contributed some to the sell-outs. Also they had good promotions--dollar dogs on Thursday, Jose Cruz figurines on Saturday. But mostly it was about Beltran. I have never seen the Astros fans boo someone like that. Anytime the ball went anywhere near him, he was gettin' it.

metirish
Jul 31 2005 11:20 PM

And he answered back today, the great thing is that Willie called him into the office today and told him he was thinking about sitting him down for the game, Beltran said he was fine and wanted to play...good job by both.

The first one I can understand...bad call, but I understand the justification. The last two...how on earth did the umps justify these calls? Do we know what the explanation was? How can the ump randomly call time out when a play is in progress?

Frayed Knot
Aug 01 2005 11:31 AM

The 1st one is a case of obeying the letter of the law and throwing common sense out the window. Like BV said often; the rule book needs to be periodically reviewed and updated. That rule probably dates back to the days when fielders gloves were the size and shape of your kids' winter mittens and you couldn't be sure if it was a catch until you saw it in his hand.

#2 - the bunt play was prolly just bad judgement: ie; ump thinks that he was NOT out of the box. Seems to me that the home ump needs to get help there, not sure why he didn't.

#3 - Looked like the 1st base ump thought that the pitch in the dirt hit the batter on the foot (so did several of the announcers) and so he signaled for time out. Of course it's not HIS call there so that's where the screw up was. Problem is that once he calls 'Time' nothing which occurs afterward is valid.
