I just loaded up the "retro" MLB Gameday: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2006/gd.html?2007_08_11_flomlb_nynmlb_1&brand=mlb ...and there it was! Usually use that or USA Today for the lineup. Green being held out against the lefty is fine, but strange to see Beltran out too. Was there maybe something about the abdominal strain he had that makes it ok to hit from one side but not the other?

I like the stirrups, but what I really love are Mets home runs. At the end of five complete, the Mets lead 2-0, thanks to Wright's 2 run Kaboom! in the fourth.

Through 6 the Mets hold a slim 3-1 advantage. I would really enjoy it if the Mets offense would crank up and produce a few runs.

I don't mean to be Buzzy McBuzzkill, but our team absolutely sucks. We take 7 or 8 innings a night off, our manager makes goofy decisions, and mostly, our guys just don't execute. Reyes may or may not have been out but if we lose it'd be the 2nd in a row where an inability to score a guy from 3rd with less than 2 outs would cost us a game. This team is just bad.

Just note this, Buzzy. If this team doesn't take six innings off offensively every night, the pressure is off our manager to make creative decisions. I wish I could put my finger on what is missing from this offense. Our strikeout-walk ratio may be good on paper, for all I know, but I'm disappointed in it from the eyewitness perspective. Reyes' popouts piss me, but so do the strikeouts for Beltran and Wright. Wright spoiled me the first two months of 2006, and I guess Reyes spoiled us the first two months of 2007.

In addition to Reyes' cooling down -- cooling WAY down, btw -- the team has had too many brave fools insisting they could play through injuries or slumps when they couldn't or can't (Valentin, Beltran) and too many guys too sickly to contribute. They've always been compromised and there's almost never been a consistent, healthy 8 in there. Too often we're settling for batting Gotay vs. a lefty, or whatever, because we have been too brittle or too unlucky. It's a team that, like in 2005, makes too many dumb decisions offensively. Reyes may have been safe on the play at the plate, but he might have well been out on the steal of second before that, and before THAT made questionable choice in bunting his way on the first place. We make too many outs on the basepaths. Slow and/or lame guys like Alou and Delgado and Castro and Valentin often require 2 hits to score -- that puts a lot of pressure on the bottom of the lineup which because of injuries has had no consistency or success. Guys like Delgado, even while not slumping, are hitting balls to the warning track this year that last year hit the scoreboard. Our RF might not hit 10 HRs all year. Our bench sucks.

I'm not making predictions, just observations. But it's definitely worth noting that head-to-head we look terrible vs. Atlanta and Philly. And it's not a matter of the record, but just how they look against them.

Not that I thought Beltran was going to hit one out there just that Castillo is the last guy you want when he's the tying run. He's flawed that way.

No hitting, spotty relief and if we don't hit the big homer we don't score at all. Makes me wonder what to do with all the money I have saved for playoff tickets.

Suddenly I'm very glad that I'm going to go more than two weeks without being able to watch Mets baseball. I don't expect they'll still be in first place when I come home from California on Labor Day. If they are, it will be a wonderful surprise.
