IGT, 8/12 Fish @ Mets

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 12 2007 10:11 AM

I figure to start this while I can:

Ramirez
DeAza
Cabrera
Willingham
Ross
Wood
Treanor
Amezega
VandenHurk -- sounds like a Dutch superhero.

Reyes
Gotay
Beltran
Wright
Delgado
Alou
Green
Castro
Perez

I'd like to teach Gotay to play RF and Milledge to play 2B.

I hate this team. I can't remember ever being more disgruntled with a first-place Mets team. Suck suck suck. I have no confidence that they will win today.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 12 2007 10:18 AM

I've never even been gruntled with this group.

We saw Vandenhurk in April.

As I recall he had some great looking stuff but was so inconsistant with anything other than the fastball that we eventually started smacking him around and he was pulled after throwing a million pitches in just four innings.

Of course we were actually hitting back them.

DocTee
Aug 12 2007 10:52 AM

Vandenhurk started and won the Futures Game in SF this summer during the All Star Break. (And this was after having made several starts for the Fish. ) He's a native of Holland-- played, I believe, on their national team, skippered by former MFY Robert Eenhorn.

I always wondered why their was a rush to sign Japanese players (Hideki Irabu, in particular) after Ichiro's success. Was there a similar rush to sign Dutch players after Bert Blyleven's success?

Anyway, Vandenhurk is supposed to be a keeper.

Nice of Jeff Wilpon to get dressed up for the Glavine ceremony.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 12 2007 11:14 AM

I'm as pleased as the next guy over Glavine's round number achievements but seems to me this was an event that, you know, deserves a domestic beer or something. Not this. Not while his team is in the dumps.

metirish
Aug 12 2007 11:18 AM

It's a bizzare tribute,Glavine looks embarrassed, way over the top IMO.Gretzky saying that Glavine might have been the missing piece in the Kings 1993 Stanley Cup bid was fun.

Johnny Dickshot

I thought they were going to do all this BEFORE game time. I coulda went
out for brunch or something. Mrs. Glavine and Mrs. Glavine need to check
with each other next big event they attend together (or if they did they
need to stop).

bmfc1
Aug 12 2007 11:25 AM

I don't understand why this couldn't be done between 12:30 and 1. I enjoyed the fans booing Bobby Cox.

Glavine is all class though.

Johnny Dickshot

Lotta cash and prizes for 58 wins in 4.5 years.

Jesus. Leadoff HR.

Kid Carsey
Aug 12 2007 11:41 AM

Ramirez couldn't wait to get started either, huh?

bmfc1
Aug 12 2007 11:45 AM

I am stunned: my son and I are seeing Glavine at RFK this Friday and I thought it would be cool if he wore a "Glavine 300" shirt.. they're aren't sold on the website! The Mets have actually not taken advantage of a chance to make money.

No kidding...and on the highlight video, they show one measly strikeout from the playoffs last year -- the time when having Glavine really paid big dividends. Strange.

To save the IGT from being a total bitchfest:

3 Run for Alou.

3-1 Good Guys

Kid Carsey
Aug 12 2007 12:18 PM

Freakin' Alou hits a three run KABLERAM and the kvetching continues ...

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 12:19 PM

Kiner on a Sunday, a Sunday, a Sunday. That would be so good.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 12:22 PM

That's a crappy run.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 12:25 PM

Throw was on target enough that Castro should have stayed home.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 12:27 PM

This inning sucks. Missing a fly by 13 feet. Wow.

Kid Carsey
Aug 12 2007 12:33 PM

Inning could have been a lot worse, and I think it was only six or seven
feet looking at the replay.

Yanks are winning, *lick*, *lick*, *lick* ...

And REYES GOES YARD TO TIE IT!!!

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 12:58 PM

Two catchers broken at once. Getting scary.

And DiFelice, pulling a big-league pitch for the first time in a decade, breaks the auxialry clock with a long foul drive.

I wonder if the Mets will ever bother fixing it.

What I wouldn't give for a lopsided laugher by the Mets. I'm starting to doubt we''ll enjoy another of them this season.

I'd like to give a few opposing starting pitchers a short workday myself.

Mets hold a 5-4 lead going to the seventh inning stretch.

I'm probably asking for a miracle, but a few insurance runs would be great. How soon before Wright or Alou bat again?

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 01:50 PM

OK, two scoreless by Sosa, the hot hand.

Which of the cold hands is next?

Rockin' Doc

Edgy -"Which of the cold hands is next?"

Please, please, please, Willie anyone but Mota.

I'm not sure that's the right call to send to your bullpen coach.

Frayed Knot
Aug 12 2007 01:55 PM

Well, Heilman, who had as bad a night as Mota plus threw about 35 pitches in his lone inning of work, is the one warming up.

Wow. Apparently Sosa will come out for a third inning as Willie allows him to hit for himself.

Upon edit: Missed Easley pinch-hitting for Sosa on Gameday. I thought Willie had lost his mind there for a moment.

No, Easley PHed and walked.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 12 2007 01:59 PM

I caught my mistake too late. I was flipping between computer screens and I'm pretty sure I saw Sosa's picture when they were flashing the Strikeout for DeFelice. Computer game casts can be a maddening experience sometimes.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 12 2007 02:02 PM

My eyes may not have been playing tricks on me as now Gameday is reprting that Dan Uggla is making a defensive switch from secondbase to secondbase while Amazega switches from firstbase to firstbase.

Frayed Knot
Aug 12 2007 02:04 PM

That part is correct, they did that as part of a double-switch with the pitcher change.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 02:04 PM

Hanley is human?

Rockin' Doc
Aug 12 2007 02:09 PM

I figured out there was a double switch with Uggla entering the game to hit in the pitcher's spot, but the way Gameday had it written made virtually no sense. They have since corrected it to actually make sense.

Meanwhile, the Mets strand two and fail to score any insurance runs.

Frayed Knot
Aug 12 2007 02:10 PM

For those of you scoring at home (or even if you're alone):
Heilman in - hitting 2nd in the order.
Castillo in - hitting 9th replacing Gotay

Uggla's a nice hitter but a bad 2nd baseman.
He had a ton of time to make that play.

The Mets are supposed to score ten runs a game? I'm glad that them doing
so pulled your head off the sore for a day, but sheesh, you'll be back on it

Not to just single out CF, but what's the deal? Does anyone member 1992? 1993? 2003? There have been plenty opportunities to be miserable. This year is not one of them. Leave the misery to Sal.

Gwreck
Aug 12 2007 06:16 PM

I think it's still a hangover effect from last year when making the playoffs wasn't in doubt starting around Memorial Day.

That being said, they are still playing worse than their record suggests, I think.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 06:19 PM

They are 65-52.

Pythagoras says their record should be 64-53.

It's just not a year with dominant teams. Arizona is hot and on top but were floundering three months ago. Los Angeles was ahead of the Mets and on top of the west seven weeks ago and (I called it) is now barely above water. (I really think 'Zona and 'Rado are looking good down the road.)

Only the Angels and the Yankees have currently won more than two in a row; only the Yankees have won more than three.

Maybe either the dumber or the smarter GMs are out of baseball these days (or both), but there are no teams over .600 and none under .400.

TB still falls under .400, but they are close at .388. I swear this year is like going through 2000 all over again...not only with the Mets, but with the league too.

We can complain about the Mets all we want, but I can't find a single dominant team this year in either league. I think fans of all teams over .500 can still find many things to complain about.

Edgy DC
Aug 12 2007 06:44 PM

Sorry, I forget to think of TB as a big-league team.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 12 2007 07:28 PM

This year is like 2005 more than anything. That year we found a level at .500 and stayed a game or two above/below it all year long. This year, our level is a bit higher but we're just as stuck.

I thought for a while maybe that it was a good thing the Mets hadn't "peaked" yet -- last year, I think, they peaked too early. Now I think there is no peak. They are what they is.

TransMonk
Aug 12 2007 08:00 PM

1999:2000::2006:2007 - at least that's how I see it.

I think the 2005ers played to their potential. 2007 is playing way below it IMO.

DocTee
Aug 12 2007 09:09 PM

Speaking of parity...

No divsional leader has more than a 4 game advantage on any other club. And half the teams are within 5.5 games of their division leader.

That may make for a quiet waiver deadline, since so many ar so seemingly close.

The 2000'ers played about a mile over their heads. Check out the starting outfield from the WS.
