Quiz: Top Ten Prospects

Edgy DC

Name the "Top Ten Met Propects."

According to "Baseball Scouting Report."

From 1977.

Thirty years ago.

Hint: Eight made it to the bigs, six as a Mets.

Perhaps Mike Scott, Mookie Wilson and Roy Staiger are on there?

I'm guessing that this was during spring training 1977?

I'll say Lee Mazzilli, Neil Allen...

Edgy DC

Perhaps Mike Scott...
Mike had his breakthrough year in 1977 with Jackson. He might have been close (certainly in retrospect), but his 3-3 record at Jackson, his Pepperdine career and second-round pick status weren't enough for "Baseball Scouting Report."

...Mookie Wilson...
At South Carolina at the time.

and Roy Staiger are on there?
Roy had debuted in 1975 and played a full season in 1976.

I'll say Lee Mazzilli,...
Appparently disqualified by his 77 1976 at-bats.

... Neil Allen...
Bingo

Hints:

One guy was a pitcher who may have been a better hitter.

Only one guy, besides Allen, had a long career, and won a championship.

One guy hung up his cleats in the minors and became an actor, but didn't kill his girlfriend's cat. Eventually he quit that also and became a priest.

One guy, during a particularly awful year, was part of a zero-homer staff at his position (not pitcher) for the Mets.

One guy forced the Mets to cirumvent big-league rules.

One guy never played for the Mets ,debuted for the Yankees, resurfaced later for the A's, but never played for Billy Mertin. Which is good, because he never did a thing for either team, despite having a cool cowboy name.

I'll guess two of my favorite Met prospect names:

Roy Lee Jackson
Jackson Todd

And for kicks, how about the Flushing flash himself,

Ed Glynn

My "some other guy" was Kelvin Chapman.

Benjamin Grimm
Aug 08 2007 01:13 PM

Bobby Brown?

Jesse Orosco?

Roy Lee is what we call a "good guess." He's also a guy who I hinted may have been a better hitter:

  1. Roy Lee Jackson - Will be ready for big league rotation with one more solid year in minors. One of best pitchers in Texas League, needs a year in AAA.

Jackson Todd seems a pretty inexplicable oversite for this journal, as he went 13-9, 2.91 for Tidewater in 1976, but discluded he is.

Ed Glynn had debuted with Detroit in 1975. That's an Undeniable Ed Glynn Fact.

Kelvin Chapman (sorry about banjaxing your post) had only played a partial season at the Rookie level in 1976.

I think there was a catching prospect named Butch Benton around that time.
Nino Espinosa(or am I off by a year?)

Steve Chilcott.

No, just kidding. Hubie Brooks? Mike Scott?

Edgy DC

Orosco's first pro year was 1978 in the Twins system. He debuted as a Mets property in the big leagues.

I think Bobby Brown was still in the low minors in 1977

And wasn't Juan Berenger a "hot prospect" for about four straight years back then because of his great stuff/ minor league K rates?

Alex Trevino.
John Pacella.
Juan Berengeur.

Butch Benton, a future part of the power failure that was the 1980 Mets catching corps.

  1. Roy Lee Jackson - Will be ready for big league rotation with one more solid year in minors. One of best pitchers in Texas League, needs a year in AAA.

  4. Butch Benton - High draft pick had poor year defensively, leading Midwest League in errors by a catcher and passed balls. May move to first base, but doesn't hit enough to make it unless his catching skills develop. Still in Mets' plans. Should improve.

Espinosa, already a big leaguer.

Hubie Brooks, still at Arizona State.

Mike Scott, already guessed.

Juan Berenguer, yup.

  1. Roy Lee Jackson - Will be ready for big league rotation with one more solid year in minors. One of best pitchers in Texas League, needs a year in AAA.

  3. Juan Berenguer - Hard thrower, but still very wild. May develop into big league reliever. Needs work.

  4. Butch Benton - High draft pick had poor year defensively, leading Midwest League in errors by a catcher and passed balls. May move to first base, but doesn't hit enough to make it unless his catching skills develop. Still in Mets' plans. Should improve.

Wasn't there some Von Ohlen guy -- Doug? Dave? -- who played somewhere else? I seem to remember a Marshall Brandt who we hoped would be a slugger.

Sorry, brother, we cross-posted. Pacella was the fella that the ticket-sella hoped would get the Mets out of the cella. He also forced the Mets to circumvent the rules in building a bullpen screen so the TV cameras wouldn't catch him warming up without his hat.

Bingo and bongo. Best quiz answer ever? (Tell me you didn't cheat.)

  1. Roy Lee Jackson - Will be ready for big league rotation with one more solid year in minors. One of best pitchers in Texas League, needs a year in AAA.

  2. Marshall Brant - Big, slow power hitter. Bat may take him far. Needs to make better contact, but has chance for long big league career. Pencil him in as Mets' first baseman of the future.

-- Sadly, I used to study those Mets yearbooks, and the "future Mets" pages. I remember that Rich Folkers always seemed to be on those pages! He migh thave the record for most yearbook appearances vs actual major league appearances.

Three guys remain. All hard.

1) A guy who hung 'em up in the minors before becoming a stage and film actor, then a Catholic priest.
2)A guy who made it to Tidewater before failing to become the first Venezuelan Met since Elio Chacon.
3) A first-round draft pick who only played one season in the bigs, with Atlanta.

Oh, the glorious Banana Splits! I had the 45 RPM of "Tra La La (The Banana Splits Theme)" that I got from sending away box tops.

I think the name might be "Beagle" instead of "Bingo," thought.

Funny, I used "Bingo" for both "correct" and "incorrect" in this thread.

Time's up.

  5. Ed Cipot - Sweet-swinging lefty hitter, makes better contact than Brant and will eventually battle him for Mets' first base job. Can also play outfield. (Future actor and priest. Was in The Natural.)

  6. John Pacella - Shows good stuff, but inconsistent. Might make majors in a couple of years.

  7. Neil Allen - Good curve, raw, but good arm and could come fast.

  8. Juan Monasterio - Good outfielder. Needs 3 years before he gets his shot at the big leagues. Needs to hit more. (Failed Venezuelan.)

  9. Dave Von Ohlen - Raw lefty with potential. Decent stuff. A few years away.

  10. Cliff Speck - Not coming along as expected. Just fair in all aspects. May pitch in big leagues, but more likely to top out at AAA. (Number one pick and eventual 1986 Brave.

Thank you for playing.
