Minnesota bridge collapses into the Mississippi during rush hour. Yike.

I just read about this. Scary.

It brings back memories of the collapse of a section of the Mianus River Bridge in Greenwich.

That's just a terrible thing to name a river.

"What are you doing this weekend?"
"Sailing up Mianus."
"..."

Seriously, this is a crazy, tragic story. It's incredible that as of now there have only been seven confirmed fatalities (although you figure that number will grow). Glad to see all those kids on that school bus are okay.

The coroner has actually lowered the death count to four.

Which is good news, but no one really knows how many people are missing. Estimates are as many as 20.

There was something surreal about seeing a large chunk of road that looked as though it were sitting atop the water, with folks on cell phones standing outside their cars, calling for help.

I remember that Conn. event clearly. I still think about that one section of highway just dropping.

CNN and its website airing surveillance video of the bridge collapse. God aweful stuff.

WP - "The coroner has actually lowered the death count to four."

They must have some damn good doctors in Minnesota.

Seriously, this is a horrible tragedy. It demonstrates just how fragile our exixtence really is. My prayers go out to all those individuals involved and their families.

This and the steam pipe explosion in New York are going to bring scrutiny to infrastructure problems in the country. Hopefully intelligent productive response will win out over media hysteria.

Now where did those images go?

I swear this place has a ghost in the machine.

That was the first thing I thought of when I heard it, too.
I heard a report that said when they were working on the bridge using hand held jackhammers a few weeks ago, they felt the bridge shake.
That should have sent up warning flares immediately.

Meanwhile my wife already had a phobia about bridges collapsing while she's driving over them.

So where were she and I when that incredibly scary lightning storm hit on Friday night?

Why, we were driving over the Throgs Neck Bridge while rain so heavy I couln't see the cars in front of me was coming down in sheets, thunder exploding and lightning bolts the like of which I've never seen were crackling all over the place.

It was fun. Really.

Those lightning bolts were amazing. Thick and they hung in the air for what seemed like a full second. Then when they dissipated there was like a burn residue that stayed for maybe another half-second. Crazy shit.

Some particularly high or narrow (or both) bridges station workers at either end in order to drive people across who are too intimidated by the visual aspect of the bridge to drive it themselves.
It's not really the thought of collapse that worries them, but those folks aren't exactly going to be emboldened by this incident.
