Long John and the P.G.A.

John Daly turns in the 2nd best opening round on day 1 (-3) and is actually ahead at the moment as he tees off on day 2 because the leader fell off the pace after his early tee time.

So bets are likely being taken on-site and in betting parlors everywhere as to at what point Big John melts away?
* either literally - due to his fine conditioning in the 104 degree heat (and isn't putting an August golf match in Tulsa, Oklahoma a good idea!)
* or figuratively - by blowing shots all over the course and then getting frustrated and missing quick-hit putts.

Meanwhile, it's always fun for us duffers to see a pro - and U.S. Open champ Angel Cabrera no less- taking a [u:5744c0992a]10[/u:5744c0992a] on a Par 3 yesterday.

Old golfers joke:
Q: How did you shoot a ten on that hole?
A: I missed a 6-foot putt for nine

I can't imagine that there's anyone who isn't rooting for John Daly. Guy's had a lot of tough breaks. He deserves one.

Yes and no.
I root for the guy all the time*, but he's dug himself more holes than he's fallen into.

He prepared for this week, btw, not by actually familiarizing himself with the course but by familiarizing himself with the nearby casino.

* Back when he was a TOTAL unknown and showed up (hungover) as the 9th alternate at the '91 PGA only to procede to lead the tourney wire to wire, I was hanging with a bunch of clowns at a 3-day golf tourney/drinkathon of our own.
Between rounds - and during the after-round rounds - we would catch the ongoing PGA on TV and immediately and unanimously adopted him as our hero and patron saint. The best part about it all was listening to the announcers (most of them seeing him for the first time also) being absolutely awestruck at the over-the-top violence in his swing and the stunning length of the shots he was hitting. They, of course, kept expecting the out-of-nowhere leader to fall off the pace after his momentary lead as they always do. Except for that time.
I still remember his walk up the 18th fairway on Sunday.

P.S. His post-round press-conference after yesterday's round was a fuckin' riot.

I know I already mentioned my son once tonight (as a little boy, to boot) but when he was about two and his hair was very blonde and (good god) cut in kind of a mullet and wore a particular white polo shirt he had and was very very white and pudgy, he looked a lot like a young John Daly.

Luckily, he's thinned down.

But I still like Daly, I'll root for him.

I had hair that color when I younger too, although never had the mullet cut and was always far too skinny to be a John Daly look-alike.

John followed his 2-under Thursday with a +2 Friday putting him 6 shots off the lead (Tiger). He's unlikely to make that up although he's not out of it and has yet to have a blow-up round even though these major courses are set-up for controlled play and he insists on playing them as dangerously as possible.
It's why he's so fun/tragic to watch.

Poor Sergio Garcia... he just got disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

Mullet and baby fat happily long gone :)

Maybe we could hope for a blow-up round for Tiger
