Mets win (67-52), Phillies lose (63-56), but the Braves win (64-56)which means we've hit the

To eliminate both the "battle tested" Braves and the "team to beat" (according to Jimmie Rollins) Phillies.

The Braves are a half game (win) better than the Phillies at this moment, the number is now 32 to squish the Fish and 31 to end DC's hopes of its first postseason apperance since 1933.

a little early for this imo.

SteveJRogers
Aug 15 2007 09:22 PM

True, but its a good way to think on the bright side by thinking about things like magic numbers.

For all the talk of how much last year reminded everyone of 1986, well this year isn't exactly 1987, on this date the Mets had close to the same record that they have today, but were 5.5 games back, and in third place!

Farthest I'd dare start it at is 20.

Good lord, this is jumping the gun a little...

Benjamin Grimm

I wouldn't count down until we get the feeling that the title is inevitable.

We're a long way from that.

Gwreck
Aug 16 2007 05:45 AM

Didn't we start when it was over 100 last year?

I think counting down from 40 is just fine.

seawolf17
Aug 16 2007 06:24 AM

40? I thought it was still bigger than that. I like the countdown... it reminds me that we're still in first place, even though the haters don't want to believe it. Keep bringing it, Steve.

The Mets had a much bigger lead last year.

With a half game lead, starting the countdown at 10 would even be premature.

Noting the magic number is one thing, as a measurement of the task ahead. But "countdown" implies inevitability, and that's just not the situation at all.

??

Our lead is 4 games in the division.

Benjamin Grimm

I know THAT.

My point was that the magic number alone doesn't determine whether or not clinching is inevitable. It's relative to the lead.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 16 2007 02:07 PM

I agree it's a little early to start a countdown with as tight as the division race is at this time.

Luckily for Steve that I'm not an overly superstitious person. Otherwise, should the Mets should fail to win the division, I would be compelled to grab my old Adirondack, travel to New York, and go Offerman on him for jinxing the Mets.

TransMonk

35 as Phillies rain-delayed loss goes final and they fall to 5 games back.

San Diego also beats Houston pushing them to within 4 of Arizona and leaves the Mets with the biggest Division lead in baseball.

33 as the Phillies "keep pace" with a 15-3 loss to the Dodgers.

Braves also lose 4-2 to the Reds which drops their tragic number to 31

Rockin' Doc
Aug 25 2007 09:23 AM

There is apparently something I'm not quite understanding here. If both the Mets and Braves won last night, how did the Mets magic number for the Braves change by 2 games? It was stated to be 32 games following Thursday's games and fell to 30 following Friday play. Doesn't one of those numbers have to be incorrect?

metsmarathon
Aug 25 2007 10:00 AM

on the 23rd, the phils' magic number was 32. the braves was 30. since the thread only deals with the magic number to win the division, the magic number to eliminate the 3rd place team was omitted.

so the next day, the mets won, the phillies lost (30) and the braves won (29). the braves and phillies are tied at 6 games behind us, but philly has one fewer losses than the braves, and are therefore ahead by a percentage points and are also one game farther from elimination.

Rockin' Doc
Aug 25 2007 02:58 PM

A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted
Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change, as is false women's fashion;
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue, all 'hues' in his controlling,
Much steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created;
Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.

Heh, well there is a "wrinkle" of sorts, only Uni numbers worn by members of the postseason roster of division winners (Sorry Ventura, Zeile, Alfonzo and others from 99-00). Hence Hojo, Agee and Green. Well otherwise I'd be spending time trying to locate a shot of 1973 Met Jerry May as well as adding Victor Diaz in the mix along with other wearers of various numbers through that particular season.

SteveJRogers
Sep 05 2007 03:36 PM

Fitting that a number that was used just on any of the previous 4 division winning postseason rosters appears on a day the number decreases thanks to a loss.

Nothing against Bobby O, just feels a bit lonely having one guy representing #19, added to the taste of not winning today.

Interesting and useless tidbit:

Bobby Ojeda of course was injured for the 1988 postseason, and my copy of the 1973 NLCS program (IIRC its the Mets one, not the Reds) does list Brian Ostrosser as #19 even though he was no where near the postseason roster. My guess is he, along with John Strohmayer were just called up in August and would have been possiblities if there was an injury or two late.

Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion's paws,
And make the earth devour her own sweet brood;
Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws,
And burn the long-lived phoenix in her blood;
Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleets,
And do whate'er thou wilt, swift-footed Time,
To the wide world and all her fading sweets;
But I forbid thee one most heinous crime:
O, carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow,
Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen;
Him in thy course untainted do allow
For beauty's pattern to succeeding men.
Yet, do thy worst, old Time: despite thy wrong,
My love shall in my verse ever live young.

The problems with the sonnets is that the order isn't arbitrary, but there's a narrative thread from one to the next, so posting them backwards is as much fun as reading a book backwards.

I'm cool with presidents. Hayes won the most bitterly contested presidential election in US history, probably more so than 2000.

He was till in the Army, fighting in the Civil War and holding the rank of brevet major general when he was nominated for the House of Representatives. He accepted the nomination, but refused to campaign, arguing, "an officer fit for duty who at this crisis would abandon his post to electioneer... ought to be scalped."

Buchanan was a horrible president, and sort of an odd duck with a personal life that would make it somewhat more difficult to get elected today. Then again, considering recent events he might just have been ahead of his time.

Everyone of them knew that as time went by
They'd get a little bit older and a litter slower but
It's all the same thing, in this case manufactured by someone who's always
Umpteen your father's giving it diddly-i-dee
District was leaving, intended to pay for

Number 9, number 9

Who was to know?

Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9,
number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9

I sustained nothing worse than
Also for example
Whatever you're doing
A business deal falls through
I informed him on the third night
When fortune gives

Number 9, number 9, number 9

People ride, people ride
Ride, ride, ride, ride, ride
Ride! Ride!

9, number 9, number 9, number 9

I've missed all of that
It makes me a few days late
Compared with, like, wow!
And weird stuff like that
Taking our sides sometimes
Floral bark
Rouge doctors have brought this specimen

I have nobody's short-cuts, aha…

9, number 9

With the situation

They are standing still

The plan, the telegram

Ooh ooh

Number 9, number

Ooh

A man without terrors from beard to false
As the headmaster reported to me
My son he really can try as they do to find function
Tell what he was saying, and his voice was low and his hive high
And his eyes were low

Alright!

Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9,
number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9,

So the wife called me and we'd better go to see a surgeon
Or whatever to price it… yellow underclothes
So, any road, we went to see the dentist instead
Who gave her a pair of teeth which wasn't any good at all
So I said I'd marry, join the fucking navy and went to sea

In my broken chair, my wings are broken and so is my hair
I'm not in the mood for whirling

Um da
Aaah

How?
Dogs for dogging, hands for clapping
Birds for birding and fish for fishing
Them for themming and when for whimming

Only to find the night-watchman
Unaware of his presence in the building

Onion soup

Number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9, number 9

Industrial output
Financial imbalance

Thrusting it between his shoulder blades

The Watusi
The twist

Eldorado

Take this brother, may it serve you well

Maybe it's nothing
Aaah
Maybe it's nothing
What? What? Oh

Maybe even then
Impervious in London
Could be difficult thing
It's quick like rush for peace is
Because it's so much

It was like being naked
If you became naked

I'm not claiming Jackson was a moral paragon, and I hope nobody who found Kennedy's story notable would make the same claim about him.

More importantly, I'm just claiming there is a lot in common with themes of the broad Irish-American story in Jackson's personal story, tellingly so, not that Jackson was necessarily better man.

John Quincy Adams, the first son of a former POTUS to be elected President. There would not be another untill George W. Bush in 2000.

Interestingly enough, both Adams are the only one-termers in a stretch from Washington to Jackson of 5 two-termers in 7 Presidents. After Jackson though, Lincoln would be the next two-termer.

Well, all things considered, I'd rather see them win the divisional title and go down in flames in the NLDS than see them go down in flames this week and win nothing at all.

If the Mets are in the playoffs, there's the possibility, however slim, that they'll catch fire at the last minute and pull out an unlikely World Championship.

Even though the Mets have been in first place since May, I'm no longer expecting the postseason as I was a couple of weeks ago. The rug has been pulled out from under me, and I'm over the shock and in the acceptance stage. If they don't make it, I won't be crushed. If they DO make it, then I have some playoff baseball to watch.

I've figured out a way to make lemonade out of all this.

The Magic Number is 4. I wish it was zero, but I'm glad it's not 6.

I was not being sarcastic in the least bit.

I have booed, I do boo, I will boo in the future but I would stop short of labeling myself as 'abusive'.

I'm just not sure what clinching anything is going to do at this point. If they can't hold the Nationals to less than 10 runs a game what can we realistically expect from them in the playoffs?
