Ten facts about Jeff Conine.

1) Last remaining player from the 1992 expansion draft. (Two of those players have since managed teams. One --- Carl Everett --- is a Duck.) 2) He's the only player to appear in the opener of the Marlin's inaugural season, the 1997 World Series Marlins' championship team, and the 2003 World Series Marlins' championship team. 3) Proprieter of Conine's Clubhouse Grill. 4) Besides "Niner" and "Mr. Marlin," he has also been tagged "The Barbarian," presumably a contraction of "Conine the Barbarian." He likes this one best. 5) He's a world-class racquetball player. 6) He competes in doubles with his wifey Cindy. 7) Four years ago, the Marlins made a deadline deal for him after Mike Lowell broke his wrist. They beat the Yankees. 8) Was 58th-round draft choice. 9) He embittered Gary Sheffield by being the "posterboy" of the Marlins, allegedly because he's white, the first in a series of situations where Gary's been the best player, but failed to get posterboy status because of pigment. Gary nonetheless names Niner as a friend. 10) His favorite player is George Brett. His pet peeve is excuses.

Has played with a number of Mets on the Marlins over two tours,said he'll fit right in with the Mets clubhouse as soon as all those ex Marlin Mets get of the DL.

I played a lot racquetball growing up,great sport...regarding Jeff's eatery the reviews are in..... ] It took over 45 min for me to get a salad. The steak was burnt. I ordered med-rare that took well over an hour and a half. This place is going down hill from when it first opened up. Do NOT waste your time. I wonder if that's not a pissed of pitcher that Jeff owns.

I ate there and my steak came right away but my salad was burnt. Can you believe it? Mets roster has him listed in No. 28.

He's a two-time Royal, a two-time Marlin and a two-time Oriole. He's played with 7 current Mets before: Castillo (96, 97, 03, 04 Marlins); Alou (97 Marlins); Castro (03, 04 Marlins); Easley (04, 05 Marlins); Lo Duca (04, 05 Marlins); Mota (04, 05 Marlins); and Delgado (05 Marlins). He has a lot of history with former Met closers or current closers elsewhere who are former Mets: Weathers (93 Marlins, 94 Marlins, 95 Marlins, 96 Marlins, 04 Marlins, 07 Reds); Orosco (99 Orioles); Looper (02 Marlins); Benitez (04 Marlins)

On the back cover of Dan Schlossberg's Miracle Over Miami, which recounts Florida's unlikely or at least unforeseen 2003 world championship season, [url=http://faithandfear.blogharbor.com/blog/_archives/2007/8/21/3173477.html]Jeff Conine poses[/url] with a genuine and genuinely presumptuous NYC Subway poster urging one and all to "Celebrate our Yankees' World Series victory at a New York ticker-tape parade!" on October 28, 2003, a parade that was never held. Anybody who rubs it in the collective MFY face starts out ahead of the game with me.

I like Conine. I was fortunate to be at the Marlins' very first game and was able to attend Game 6 of the 1997 series. (My folks live in Florida) Seeing the photo on the magazine cover, I kind of liked when they had the teal undershirts and caps. Certainly the only team with that look at the time and it was very South Florida. Check out a game in Miami sometime if you can. The ballpark, while certainly not ideal, is not as bad as they say.

How can you not like Conine's acquisition? He taunts the Yankees after helping to beat them in the World Series, he comes with ready made pictures for the wifey watch thread, and he shouild be a major upgrade over Franco as a RH power bat off the bench. He also offers an experienced (right handed) first baseman to spell Delgado against tough lefties.
