Turd Blossom quits.

I don't really have anything to add to this, I just wanted to make that horrible pun in the headline.

Like rats on a sinking ship.

I'm not sure that metaphor applies. He's not running away from the administration. His legacy is his own.

He was way out of his depth. And of all the things he got nailed on, the firing of the US attorneys is just a stupid reason to did his own grave.

That's something Bush seems to excel at ,putting people in jobs they are not qualified for.

Myers,Brown and Gonzalez and more I can't think of in not so glamorous positions.

I don't know about glamourous. A lot of presidents have put their personal attorneys in the role of attorney general. And Kennedy, famously, put his brother.

I also don't know if Harriet Miers was unqualified for her role in the administration (White House counsel). She certainly appeared overwhelmed during her brief run as a Supreme Court nominee (a nomination suggested, it shouldn't be forgotten, by Harry Reid), but what torpedoed her nominatin was not her incompetence --- apparrent or real --- but her being too much of a compromise candidate for the Republican base.

I don't know why Gonzalez was ever approved, considering his poo-pooing of the Geneva Convention, but his navigating the firing "scandal" was tragecomic. All he had to do was say "The hiring of firing of US Attorneys is the president's perogative" and been dicky about it. But to fly into denial, block subpoenas, ultimately perjure himself wasted his time in office, the time and money of Congress and the people, and president's confidence in him. A short, stupid tenure.

Funny, but I probably still like him better than his predecessor.

Perhaps with an ordinary President this would be an accurate analysis. But since President Bush is so stubborn - or as he would call it "resolve" - about not admitting his mistakes, he would stand by Gonzales until the Rapture if he knew it would piss off his opponents. By resigning, Gonzales is saying he's not going to stand by the President and fight the good fight against the liebrals who are abusing Congress for partisan politics.

Word is that Michael Chertoff, currently head of Homeland Security, will be appointed new AG. Given his stellar performance during Katrina it's hard to have any confidence in him in a bigger role. Also there's his involvement in the Clinton impeachment which signals a nasty approval process.

Oh please,Chertoff is the idiot that slashed anti-terror funds to NYC because in his estimation New York doesn't have any monuments or national icons that need protection, cut them by 40% IIRC.

Well, Katrina wil hurt him, but he was approved 98-0 as Secretary of Homeland Security, so I don't anticipate the impeachment being an issue now. Hillary Clinton doesn't like him.

Not every day that one gets to jump 9 spots in the presidential line of succession.
