Late seventies/early eighties, there used to be a television commercial pushing a collection of Slim's music, claiming his sales (somehow) rivaled those of Elvis and the Beatles.

I assume so.
It's domestic "record & CD sales" in total dollars.

Well, I guess being around for a while will help, so I'll suit up the Rolling Stones and Barbara Streisand and throw them into the ring.

Pink Floyd has to be in there somewheres.

I can't believe no one nominated one of the favorites of the CPF, the Eagles.

I suspect that there may be a healthy contingent of hip-hop and rap artists filling out the top 10. Since I can't stand to listen much to either, I can not even venture a guess.

Edgy DC

Not that things have much meaning for me after a million dollars, but those numbers look small.

Record (CD) sales aren't what they used to be. And back in the days of the Beatles and Elvis, an album didn't cost nearly what they do now. They dollar figures likely aren't adjusted for inflation.

In a class on mass communication I had there was a disscussion about how fractious the world of music had become and I asked if anyone knew who had sold the most records of all time just to show how there really isn't that galvanizing Elvis, Sinatra, or Beatles out there anymore. I said Garth Brooks, a girl said "Who cares about Garth Brooks." to which I said that she had made my point.

Baited somebody. Not so great.

Does anybody else think those revenue figures are small?

I didn't really bait her, she answered my question nastily. I expected more of a "Huh, interesting." rather than slam Garth Brooks.

I'm surprised more greats from the 50s-60s like Johnny Cash or Ray Charles, or The Supremes aren't on that list.

Kind of a scattered list now that I look at it.

]Does anybody else think those revenue figures are small?

Eh, considering certain things such as the volume that is out there, and what other factor (like second hand market which has always existed, to file sharing and iTunes like programs where you can buy a song, not the album) you want to use, its not as small as you'd think.

Yeah, there's something very wrong with the numbers. A bunch of those
bands have one album that sold over 20 million copies domestically
from what little I tried to google let alone a whole career catalog. Dark
Side of the Moon
was in the top 200 for what, 20 years, and god knows
how many copies of The Wall were sold. I bought the album, then the CD,
and later got it online (I know the original premise was no downloads, I'm
just sayin'.)

What paper was this in? Is it online?

After doing a little research, I believe that Edgy and KC are correct in thinking that the total revenues (sales) for these groups sound rather low in view of the album sales (units).

Taking the Eagles and Pink Floyd as examples.

The Eagles have sold in excess 28 million units of Greatest Hits and more than 16 million units of Hotel California.

Pink Floyd has sold over 23 millions units of The Wall and more than 15 million units of Dark Side of the Moon.

Not taking into account any of the numerous other releases by each group, that's still a lot of units being sold.

$91 million in sales revenue for the Eagles' 44+ million album units and $73.5 millions in sales revenue for Pink Floyd's 38+ million album units tells me that either the numbers don't quite add up or I've been overpaying for albums (8-tracks, cassettes, records, and CD's) all these years.

I think we may be mingling US and worldwide sales.

On edit...no we're not...nevermind.

On second edit:

We have some seed. Let me clip. Your dirty wings.
Let me take ride. Don't hurt yourself. I want some help.
To help myself. I've got some rope. You have been told.
I promise you. I have been true. Let me take a ride.
Don't hurt yourself. I want some help. To help myself.
