Nope, nope, and whatdafacukyoubeendrinking?

Edgy DC Aug 13 2007 11:57 AM |
Late seventies/early eighties, there used to be a television commercial pushing a collection of Slim's music, claiming his sales (somehow) rivaled those of Elvis and the Beatles.

No no & no
I assume so. It's domestic "record & CD sales" in total dollars.
|
Edgy DC Aug 13 2007 12:08 PM |
Well, I guess being around for a while will help, so I'll suit up the Rolling Stones and Barbara Streisand and throw them into the ring.

I can't believe no one nominated one of the favorites of the CPF, the Eagles.
|
Edgy DC Aug 13 2007 12:23 PM |
Not that things have much meaning for me after a million dollars, but those numbers look small.
|

Record (CD) sales aren't what they used to be. And back in the days of the Beatles and Elvis, an album didn't cost nearly what they do now. They dollar figures likely aren't adjusted for inflation.

In a class on mass communication I had there was a disscussion about how fractious the world of music had become and I asked if anyone knew who had sold the most records of all time just to show how there really isn't that galvanizing Elvis, Sinatra, or Beatles out there anymore. I said Garth Brooks, a girl said "Who cares about Garth Brooks." to which I said that she had made my point.
|
Edgy DC Aug 13 2007 04:47 PM |
Baited somebody. Not so great.

I didn't really bait her, she answered my question nastily. I expected more of a "Huh, interesting." rather than slam Garth Brooks. I'm surprised more greats from the 50s-60s like Johnny Cash or Ray Charles, or The Supremes aren't on that list. Kind of a scattered list now that I look at it.
Eh, considering certain things such as the volume that is out there, and what other factor (like second hand market which has always existed, to file sharing and iTunes like programs where you can buy a song, not the album) you want to use, its not as small as you'd think.

Kid Carsey Aug 13 2007 05:13 PM |
Yeah, there's something very wrong with the numbers. A bunch of those

After doing a little research, I believe that Edgy and KC are correct in thinking that the total revenues (sales) for these groups sound rather low in view of the album sales (units).

I think we may be mingling US and worldwide sales.
