Proof that its way too easy to file a claim in federal court: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,293268,00.html
Jonathan Riches, an inmate in the South Carolina prison system, has filed a suit against Michael Vick alleging that he stole his pitbulls, sold them on ebay, and bought missiles from Iran with the proceeds to give to Al-Qaeda.
Mr. Riches' real goal here is obviously a transfer from prison to a mental institution. His actual filing (hand-written) can be found in a pdf link within the Fox News article i linked above.

It's kinda funny, any ideas on how to make it hard to make these kind of silly claims?

you won't dash my hopes, michael vick!

also, the article gets it wrong. "$63,000,000,000 billion dollars" is NOT $63 billion dollars. it is in fact $63 with 18 zeroes after it, or $63 quintillion dollars!

if michael vick had that kind of money, he wouldn't need to sell dogs on ebay to buy missiles for al queda. he would own us all, and most of the solar system, too.

What a great story! Plus Vick stole this guy's identity! And sold drugs in a school zone! Awesome.

I don't think I want to be a celebrity. Ever.

sure, pass a law that in any case where the complaint is dismissed pre-trial on a motion by the defendant for summary judgment (ie you had no case to begin with) the plaintiff is responsible for the defendant's costs. England goes way beyond that in holding losers liable for the other side's costs and it works for them.
alternatively, you could require a showing of some evidence along with the filing even if that showing is as minimal as possible.

It's not exactly easy to file suit in federal court. Costs about $250 to file suit. Of course, as a prisoner making the complaint, the fee may get waived.

Of course the case will go nowhere and fees for Vick will be minimal at best.

There may be some frivolous lawsuits that can cost people $ -- this one is just silly. Truth be told, I saw this a coupla weeks ago while browsing the docket sheet online for Vick's case and just ignored it because it was a non-issue.

Musta been a slow news day for FOX to pick it up.

I would imagine that it's pretty difficult to go unnoticed when you're a living statue of orange stone.
