Moving Into My First Apartment

I'm getting my own apartment this year in DC, my first apartment! I'm moving in in about two weeks. I've been furniture shopping for a couple of weeks - absolutely nuts. But I'm really excited about this place!

Avoid IKEA

Furniture shopping? You lucky stiff. The Mrs. and I furnished our first apartment exclusively with hand me downs and yard sales.

Best of luck with the move.

I bought my bedroom furniture at Costco - remarkably inexpensive - but the only problem is it'll take 4 to 6 weeks to deliver. I move in in two weeks. I guess I'll just have a mattress in there for a while.

Wow, not even a roommate? That is big news! Have a good time and change your sheets every week!

People are always moving in DC. Best just to get the bare bones and build your place on what others are selling on nice Sunday afternoons from 12-4.

Congratulations!

I remember when I got my first place. My grandmother was worried that I'd forget to eat. (That didn't prove to be a problem.)

In addition to remembering to change your sheets, please try to remember to eat. (Actually, what you really ought to do is not allow yourself to fall into bad eating habits. That can be very easy to do.)

This pad will be a chick trap, correct?

Go ahead and paint the place, I say. Find the color you want, then go one shade lighter.

Costco rules... we just purchased my daughter a bedroom set there-- very reasonable and well-made. We got five pieces (trundle bed, two bookcases, night stand, and bureau with mirror) for about $2000. We looked at Ethan Allen ($$$) but liked the style of the Costco selection better.

Unlike Ikea pressboard, which disintegrates upon move from one place to another, this stuff (made by "CafeKid" if you are in the market for children's furniture) is heavy-duty and durable. They can even deliver and asssemble if you need be, but we just made a few trips and piled everything into the Jeep. Assembly was a breeze.

Enjoy your new place, and the new furnishings. If longing for home, do what I did in my office-- frame a full size NYC subway map, available from the MTA.

Plus you're not doing business with Nazis.

We'll all be over on Wednesday to help you break the place in. So have plenty of cold beer on hand.

Best of luck with the move.

Maybe, but I don't think that applies.

As a teenager in Sweden, IKEA founder Ingvar Kampfar admitted to attending Nazi Party meetings.

PHEW.

Well, I'm moved in. I just have to get my bedroom furniture, sofa, recliner, and cocktail table delivered and my desk chair assembled. I also have to get Comcast to come back and fix my goddamn internet - half the time it's UNBELIEVABLY slow, like right now, and the other half it simply doesn't freaking work! Whatever happened to "High-Speed", Comcast? This is like circa 1994 slow! Edgy, do you have any suggestions on other internet options in DC in case Comcast doesn't work out?

I got my desk chair assembled after wrestling with it for like a half hour. Stupid armrests took forever to put on.

My internet STILL sucks. This is an outrage! How the hell am I going to be able to do anything with a Stone Age internet connection?

When I was a college sophomore, we didn't have any fancy internet in our apartments. We had to go to the computer lab and use gopher and we liked it!!!!

Comcast is the slowest internet linkup on earth. Since we have no PC now and I have to use a laptop and wireless to read my comcast email, I allow a minimum of two minutes to open their homepage and go through all the steps to get into my inbox. Suxx.

I'm sucking off of my landlord's wireless network.

What sucks is that my building manager basically said I had to get internet from Comcast. However, if Comcast comes back and things don't improve, screw it.
