bmfc1
Aug 26 2007 06:39 PM

That was on Lastings... on a relay, you have to delay your stop sign in case the relay is overthrown. If you give it too early and the throw is bad, the runner has to stop and start. Alomar did it properly there--Lastings blew it.

Edgy DC
Aug 26 2007 06:43 PM

Valadius
Aug 26 2007 06:47 PM

Let's pair Joe Morgan with Tim McCarver. We can call it the "Senile Sportscast". They'll say more bone-headed things than we'll be able to keep track of.

Edgy DC
Aug 26 2007 06:49 PM

I don't think either one of them are senile. While it's easy enough to dislike either or both, I don't think Tim McCarver compares to Joe Morgan.

- Sandy waiving him in as he approaches 3rd

- by the time he picks him up again ... well, it was just too fucking late.

I'll just admit it: I like Jon Miller a lot; and I think Joe Morgan is perfectly acceptable for the jock announcer role he plays. National guys are never going to get it as right as the local fans would want it. But those 2 are OK by me, especially since they most often call games of teams I don't see often enough to be a snarked out critic.

Jon & Joe: OK by Me.

And speaking of the Nats, there are writers out there talking up Manny Acta as manager of the year. I guess the trend now is to be the manager of a team that sucks, but doesn't suck as much as the sportswriters said it would before the season.

Because, you see, the writers can't be wrong. So then Acta, like Joe Girardi before him, must be a miracle worker.

Oh, and Scheoenweis sucks.

seawolf17
Aug 26 2007 08:07 PM

I usually like Miller; he's not the problem for me. Morgan bothers me because he's supposed to be the expert, lending his name to "Baseball For Dummies" and things like that, but it seems like he's just talking just to fill space without processing anything through the truth sensor first.

metirish
Aug 26 2007 08:08 PM

Frayed Knot

We can blame Schoeneweis all we want folks, but this game's on Maine.
Too many 2 out/2 strike hits, couldn't put away hitters when needed, high pitch counts in every inning, yadda, yadda. His line's going to wind up looking better than it should as those last 3 runs were unearned on account of the Conine error but that ball was smoked. Schoeneweis, meanwhile, gave up 1 hard hit single and two cheap IF grounders.

I think Joe is nowhere near as lame as he usually is.

The line about never seeing Carl Lewis dive to the finish line in regards to Milledge sliding head1st into 1st, and how a runner gets there faster by running thru the base, was classic funny.
Broadcast laff of the night with a broadcast team that i never expect to get a laff from.

Credits where credits due.(tho lameness usually irks me to no end)

Why am i kidding? Hernandez has been the Mets' best pitcher lately, they aren't going to not start Glavine no matter what he does, if Pedro is pitching the 3rd game that leaves Perez or Maine to get bumped.

personally i would just not start Pedro unless he is LIGHTS OUT in 3 or 4 starts when he gets back, in which case i'd not start Glavine, but i don't think the Mets will do that.

Love screams so quietly
Slipping back on golden times
Breathing with sweet memories

Promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises promises
As golden days break wondering

Only love she sees
He controls on love
Life mirrors a cure
Everything is possible in the game of life
Everything is possible
Oh no

Chance lost pearls of great price
Take care of family
Only aches for love
Love waits for fame
In chance in chance they'll see

I promised you a miracle
Belief is a beauty thing
Promises promises
As golden days break wondering

Only love she sees
He controls on love
Life throws a cure
Everything is possible in the game of life
A burning dream
You can be Queen
Everything is possible

Jonathan Broxton enters, combining with Wells to set a National League record for most pounds pitched for the same team in one game.

I'd also like Beltran to contribute something tonight.

Who are they, Joe?

Mostly Steve Phillips, who would deny that the Mets were in the playoffs even if they'd already clinched.

Bad ass!

Yeah, because he's really done nothing the last week or so.

What's with the "Mets" behind home plate painted in the grass? Looks like it was painted by Mrs. Jackson's third grade class with finger paints.

Are the Mets swinging wooden bats this inning?
the way the ball is doing the opposite of jumping off the bat on contact I get the impression they are using plastic bats.....

Hey Yancy, wherever you are - Guillermo Mota's middle name is Reynoso, or so say Howie and Tom.

I had a perfect view of the play -- was sitting in the front row of the upper deck at 3rd base.

I am 100% sure that it was on Alomar. He was giving a lackadasical wave and only put up the stop sign after how strong the throw back in was. Way too late for Lastings to have done anything.

Sandy was also out of position and should have been farther down the line, especially considering that the ball was hit to LF.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 27 2007 06:45 AM

He's absolutely awful.

metirish
Aug 27 2007 07:05 AM

Dickshot has been saying how awful Alomar is for months now...there should be an age limit on the third base job,he's too old.

Edgy DC
Aug 27 2007 07:15 AM

I think there should be a skill limit.

Alomar has had a different seat each season he's been here. Maybe he'll get a new one next year.

I don't know how they measure third-base coaches, but I think it's the sort of play higher-ups would review.

metirish
Aug 27 2007 07:18 AM

I think it was Bobby Valentine that said coaching third base is the toughest job in baseball......could have been Larry Bowa that said that though.

Frayed Knot
Aug 27 2007 07:26 AM

Sure, cuz you only notice them when they screw up.
They're the bass guitarists of a baseball team.

I agree that this one was Sandy's fault; as soon as it was hit I was thinking that it was NOT a run-scoring hit.
What Alomar was trying to do, IMO, was waive the runner on so as to not break his momentum in case of a bad relay, figuring he could then hold him up if the relay was on target (which of course it was). The problem was then compounded when Milledge looked down at the exact wrong moment and didn't see him again until it was too late.

Broadcast guys mentioned that Pedro had seen a flaw in Mota's delivery. Didn't make it until Mota pitched last night, but his line sure looks good this morning.

Gwreck
Aug 27 2007 11:53 AM

I think the story goes that he called Guy Conti from St. Lucie where he was watching games. Apparently Mota had been tipping his changeup.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 27 2007 12:22 PM

They barely finished that story before the first batter Mota faced crushed one -- though right at Alou for an out.

Edgy DC
Aug 27 2007 12:28 PM

Wasn't Mota's turnaround in 2006 attributed in part to a corrective observation made by Pedro?

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 27 2007 12:33 PM

Im thiking I'd heard that story before too.

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 27 2007 12:38 PM

I did! Except it was Jorge Sosa:

]Pedro is watching

While rehabbing in Florida, Pedro Martinez has made a contribution to the Mets' success up here. He watches most games on TV and recently he was watching Jorge Sosa and noticed a flaw in his delivery. Martinez called bullpen coach Guy Conti, who relayed the information to Sosa and pitching coach Rick Peterson.

"He saw my arm angle was off," said Sosa, who credited the change for helping his turnaround in the bullpen. "It was making me a little slow in my delivery."

Johnny Dickshot
Aug 27 2007 12:43 PM

And it was Mota last October:

]Mota arrived in Flushing and found friends. There was Lo Duca, the old friend. And there was Martinez, the new friend. He watched Mota throw in the bullpen, and he spotted a problem.

"He was tipping his pitches, from his mechanics," Martinez said last night. "You could tell what he was going to throw, just from his delivery. When you see differences like that, a good hitter, a guy like Pujols, he would just eat him up."

So Martinez mentioned this, not just to Mota, but to Lo Duca, pitching coach Rick Peterson and bullpen coach Guy Conti. They all went out to the bullpen one day for an intervention, and they all worked to fix Mota's delivery so he wasn't tipping pitches anymore.

Edgy DC

Valadius
Aug 27 2007 01:51 PM

Once Pedro retires, I'd hire him on the spot to be a roving pitching instructor.
