IGT, 09/05/07, Mets @ Reds--Looking for Six

LF Endy Chavez
2B Luis Castillo
3B David Wright
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Jeff Conine
SS Ruben Gotay
RF Lastings Milledge
C Mike DiFelice
P John Maine

No Paulie, Moises, Carlos D. or Jose. According to John Delcos:

Carlos Delgado returned to New York this morning for a MRI on his sore right hip. Delgado felt a twinge batting in the eighth inning Wednesday night.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 05 2007 09:29 AM

I don't like to hear about twinges. Hopefully the Mets won't need Delgado until early October. I wouldn't mind resting him for a few extra days as a precaution.

Among regulars, Green is also sitting today.

Gotay, batting in front of Killedge. The Willie philosophy: Make a prospect earn his place.

Let's not forget the Redleg lineup:

Hamilton cf
Gonzalez ss
Griffey Jr. rf
Phillips 2b
Dunn lf
Valentin c
Encarnacion 3b
Votto 1b
Shearn p

Griffey plays day game following night game.

What's with Griffey saying that he hopes when he hits # 600 that it's not in Cincinnati ,tough break for Delgado, finally puts together some good games in a row and now might sit for a few.

I went out looking for six all the time. Then I got this nasty STD.

With Castillo's knee, it wouldn't have killed WWSB to start Marlon at 2b, since we're going with the b-team anyway.

Phillips pwns Maine.

I think Elster was in a killing mood.

Nice try attempting to stretch a double into a triple Hamilton.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 05 2007 11:25 AM

The Phillies and Indians both have three runs on the board in the top of the first.

I wish the Mets had done that.

Willets Point
Sep 05 2007 11:28 AM

2 on with no outs. This could be the start of something good.

Gwreck
Sep 05 2007 11:30 AM

My gameday just told me that Beltran bunted the first pitch foul. He had best have been doing that to psych the other team out...and for no other reason.

Willets Point
Sep 05 2007 11:32 AM

It was all a warmup for striking out.

Go, Niner.

If Gotay comes through here I'll consider changing my son's name to Reuben.

My son has nothing to worry about.

C'mon, Mets! Don't let the opposing pitcher's feel-good story intimidate you! Send him back to the grounds crew!

Benjamin Grimm

I'm getting concerned about John Maine.

Maine could really use some rest.

Sep 05 2007 11:48 AM

For the last two weeks, the Mets seemed really determined to come back and win from 5 run deficits. Maybe today is the day it happens.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 05 2007 11:48 AM

I can see Pedro, Hernandez, Glavine and Perez all having better Septembers than him, which could mean that Maine will be this October's Darren Oliver.

That's not a prediction, by the way, but a possibility.

And maybe the Braves can do that too.

I decide to root for Tim Hudson and this is how he thanks me?

I can see that as well Yancy, plus Perez walks way to many to be coming out of the pen.

Turns out we were looking for six in all the wrong places.

5-2 Philly in the 6th, but Atlanta has 2-on w/none out.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 05 2007 01:30 PM

Braves have to settle for two runs in the sixth.

John Maine, by the way, is frittering away his chance to be the Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year.

He once had a pretty healthy lead and now he's dropped (as of the last tally) into third place.

Frayed Knot
Sep 05 2007 02:25 PM

Atlanta not going away quietly; 8-5 in the 8th, bags loaded and 1 out.
And it is, y'know, the Philly bullpen. Myers already in.

Delgado out 7 to 10 days.

Sorry, I didn't see the thread on this subject.

Braves: 2-out, bases loaded, 9th inning, 3R double

At this point in the season any day in which the magic number drops is a good day, even if the Mets get humiliated by the pathetic Cincinnati Reds.

Willie hasn't quite figured out the number one necessity for a leadoff hitter. Willie, here's a hint. It's not speed.

I saw the highlights of that Philly/Atl game and it was fargin ridiculous.
Braves scored 4 in the 8th then 3 in the 9th and hit maybe 2 balls hard the entire time. And the 3 in the 9th were after 2 out and none on.
In all there were at least 5 infield hits, plus several bloops just over the infield, plus a bunch of walks courtesy of the Philly pen. The game-winning hit was a solid shot but even that was just off the tip of the RF's glove.

Braves 9th:

- Teixeira struck out.

Ill have to watch that Phils game-it will be replayed here in a bit.

I wisked over those spoilers, tho did see that final score.
Still should be interesting.

I am starting to feel worried about Maine.
I also think he should be rested a bit at this point, but kept sharp.

It would be such a waste if he was not given a chance (or able) to pitch in ..........hmmm,dont wanna take anything for granted or jinx........
what Ill call some of the more meaningful games next month.

Watching the highlights of the Braves comeback victory over the Phillies did make me feel a little better about the events of the day.

The Mets get some much needed and well earned rest before the Mets host the Astros.

Willets Point
Sep 06 2007 06:36 AM

I'm not talking to any of you who are rooting for the Braves. Watch out or Atlanta may snag the Wild Card and kick the Mets ass in the NLCS.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The NL East title is entirely in the Mets' hands. There's nothing the Phillies can do about it. Rooting for the Phillies to lose when they're not playing the Mets is just being a weenie.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 06 2007 06:46 AM

Rooting for the Braves to lose is just being about six years behind the times.

It's cool with me when a team losses and it helps the Mets but I'm not actively rooting for the Braves to win or the Phillies to lose and I would certainly heed Willets warning.

Probably the only team I actively root for to lose is the yankees.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 06 2007 06:57 AM

If the Phillies won yesterday, they would have been four games behind. If the lead is still at four when the Phillies come to Shea a week from tomorrow, then Philadelphia is a sweep away from being one game out.

It's important, therefore, to keep the Phillies as far behind as possible before that series starts. If the Phillies come to town six or more games out, the Mets will be in much better shape.

The Braves are 2.5 games further away from the Mets than the Phillies are. With only 23 games left, that's fairly significant. They're the lesser threat right now.

Willets Point
Sep 06 2007 09:06 AM

See I look at it that if the Phillies are 4 games out when they come to Shea, it's a good chance for the Mets to put them 7 games out. Call me a cockeyed optimist but I think the Mets can win the division by winning a lot of ballgames. And if they don't, it's their own damned fault.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 06 2007 09:09 AM

Then why are you worrying about Atlanta in the NLCS? If the Mets don't beat them, it's their own damn fault!

Willets Point
