Astros fire Phil Garner (and GM Tim Purpura). Bench Coach Cecil Cooper assumes managerial duties.

Cooper is interim manager. Tal Smith takes over as GM for now.

Wow! Purpura, who was Gerry Hunsicker's highly regarded long-time assistant, just got booed upon introduction during the Bagwell number retiring ceremony. Clearly a classless move by the fans - but a sign of frustration over the progress (or lack of) since the change. Even the WS appearance in 2005 could be seen as being the remnants of the Hunsicker regime.

I thought this was about a Mets coaching change....Garner will no doubt show up somewhere as a bench coach or at third or first base.

Poor Phil Garner. He'll get another job, though. Purpura, though, was awful.
